La. bridge construction plunge: 1 dead, 9 rescued
Oct 30, 4:34 PM EDT

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Crews have located the body of a dead worker and rescued nine others from a lake near New Orleans after they fell from a new bridge under construction.

Authorities say a girder gave way Thursday and the workers plunged about 30 feet into Lake Pontchartrain (PON'-cha-train) while building a new span of Interstate 10.

Nine workers were quickly pulled from the water and two of them were taken to hospitals. Officials say the most serious injury reported among survivors was a broken arm.

The body of the dead worker was spotted in about 10 feet of water beneath the fallen girder. A crane is being brought in to remove the beam and reclaim the body.

The bridge is to replace another one heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
