Missing Toddler`s Mother Reportedly Turns Down Immunity Offer
Aired September 2, 2008 - 20:00:00   ET

GRACE: Miss Anthony, I know that you want more volunteers to show up to search. Is that correct?

C. ANTHONY: No. Actually, I don`t. I think it`s a waste of time searching in the woods behind, you know -- back by the airport and all that because, you know, I know Caylee is alive.

I`ve gotten many people calling in and saying that they`ve seen Caylee. What I would like people to do is continue to get the word out and continue to look for her. And we`ve got -- I`ve gotten probably over 100 phone calls today from people that are supporting us and that are continuing in that -- those efforts just today alone.

So, you know, I`m not surprised that a lot of people aren`t showing up to search the woods, because a lot of people don`t believe that she`s out in the woods, that she`s buried. They believe that she`s alive and breathing. And that`s what we need to do is look for a little girl that`s out there, you know, maybe at a restaurant or a store or a park or whatever.

And if we continue to, you know, look at evidence that hasn`t been verified like your forensics specialist said, none of this has been verified. You guys are going to put the coffin -- Caylee in a coffin because eventually something is going to happen to her if we don`t find her.

So let`s not look at speculation. Let`s not convict someone before they`ve even been brought up on charges. Let`s look for Caylee because that`s what Tim is supposed to be here for and that`s what my goal is to get everybody out here looking for her.

Mental Illness May Determine Fate Of Mother Of Missing Caylee Anthony
Woman Charged With 1st-Degree Murder

POSTED: 9:13 pm EST November 6, 2008
UPDATED: 11:05 pm EST November 6, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The mental health of Casey Anthony, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee, could be the key to determining her fate, according to a Local 6 News report.

Anthony, 22, remains jailed and is scheduled to go to trial in January. Caylee was last seen in mid-June but was not reported missing until a month later.

Anthony has undergone two psychological evaluations, but the reports have been sealed by the judge who ordered the tests after Anthony's arrest in July.

Local 6 News investigative reporter Tony Pipitone interviewed Lake Mary psychiatrist Dr. Ryan Hall, who has not examined Anthony and could not comment to her specifically, but he has studied women who have killed and their motivations for the killings.

"You have to look at the motivation -- why they're doing -- why they think they have to (kill their own child)," Hall said.

Psychiatrists focus on five general reasons, Hall said.

Altruistic, which was explained as the person doing the child a favor.

Psychotic, when the killer is having hallucinations or delusions.

Accidental, which usually result from abuse.

Revenge, getting back at someone, usually a spouse or the child's parent.

Unwanted child.

Hall said that only in extreme cases can the killer be found not criminally responsible for the death.

"You have to have a severe mental illness, and two -- due to the severe mental illness -- you have to not realize what you were doing was wrong," Hall said.

Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who is in a psychiatric hospital after drowning her five children because she said she was battling Satan before calmly reporting the deaths to police, is an example of that type of person, Local 6 News reported.

Pipitone said the prosecution of Anthony thus far seems closer to that of Susan Smith, who let a car containing her two children roll into a lake, where they drowned. Smith blamed carjackers who never existed, and she's serving a life sentence in South Carolina.

"She was interested in an individual, (and) he said he didn't want to be with a single mother. She killed her two kids. There was concealment, it was planned out, she made false statements to police, she was trying to avoid detection (and) she knew what she'd done was wrong," Hall said.

Investigators believe Anthony is concealing the location of her daughter's body.

"No more lies. No more bull coming out of your mouth. We've been very respectful. We're taking our time and talking to you, but we're tired of all the lies. No more lies. What happened to Caylee?" Orange County sheriff's Detective Yuri Melich said in a July interview at Universal, where Anthony had said she worked.

"I don't know," Anthony said.

"You do know," Melich replied.

"I don't know," Anthony repeated.

"What happened to Caylee?" Melich asked.

"I don't know where she is. That's the God's honest truth," Anthony said.

If Anthony were delusional, she would really believe that she worked at Universal and left Caylee with an imaginary baby sitter, Pipitone said. The state claims that Anthony is lying.

Psychiatrists, like Hall, routinely determine whether someone is delusional or simply deceptive.

"You have to look at what the motivation is there. Is it that they don't want to admit they're really unemployed? Do they have to let people think they're greater than they are? So there could be personality factors, (a) need for narcissism, needs to seem greater than they are. Or they could be trying to hide embarrassment or shame," Hall said.

If Anthony has no severe mental illness, there's no way she can avoid prison, if convicted, Local 6 News reported.

"People found insane go to the state mental hospital, but that's reserved for truly psychotic people. Casey just doesn't seem to fit that bill," Pipitone said. "She's not been convicted of anything, but clearly she has issues that could lead to the death penalty being taken off the table or mitigate against a death sentence if she ever were convicted."

Spoke to Colt/Chuck and I was a little naive about the search!  Now I am really nervous but still determined.

Hi Mytime and Monkeys

I am curious about the particulars, if you can share what did you learn?

Just that - even if Casey put Caylee in something, the animals probably have still got to her...in so many words!!

The word denial had featured often in this case, but usually when talking about the grandparents.......I fully believe Casey expects to be let free or receive a slap on the wrist, a couple of years jail at worst..............I still dont think her mind has grasped the magnitude of her predicament ergo she's in a state of denial. If there's is no offer of a short prison term on the table then methinks Casey will take her chances in Court with the kidnapping tosh.

It remains to be seen however, if this so called death penalty versed Lawyer will risk his reputation by defending her on the '' Zanny the Nanny kidnapped my baby story''. He'd have his opening statement and that would be about it and as Casey is the only person who seems to know this child minder, he'd have to put her on the stand.......................... Won't happen.

She kept the charade up far too long and her parents perpetuated things to the point where theyve actually made it more difficult for her to fess up. As said before, I'm sure the Police have other strong evidence yet to be released to Joe Public, but now in the hands of Baez and Co. The State hold all the major cards here and have no need nor suspect any desire to bargain with Casey Anthony. She could only now offer to say where she disposed of Caylee and TES may well find that place before the week is out.

As ever, Smile>- all jmvho........I hope this time next week little Caylee is resting in a rose garden. Good Luck to Tim Miller and all the volunteers who will assist him, @};-

Well do you think it is a futile effort than?  Clothes can still be located or bones or even the container.  That would still be of vital importance.  There are a lot of variables but one can't predict the outcome until they are out there.  I am confident in the effort, and despite the results you should feel good about your part in this.  You are doing it for Caylee and Justice and we really appreciate your efforts.

Casey has lied and withheld Caylee's location for so long, that any remains will likely be sparce and scattered, unless she was buried fairly deep.  Caylee was already decomposing before Casey hid her in her current location.  I think Casey knew that the longer she stalled, the less there would be for TES to find.  Thank you to all of you who will be searching.

Futile effort? No way! I will really depend on what kind of container, and how well it was sealed. I did a recovery of one pilot (plane crash), in dense jungle, 6 months lost, very limitied search team, and we still found enough for ID.....and none of it was even near the crash site.  So yes.....if Caylee is located within the search area...she WILL be found.

Chuck - do you have any idea how many cadaver and air scent dogs they will be using?  I know that Tim has some, but will there be more to spread through all of these search teams?

A year after Steve Fossett and his plane disappeared the wreckage was found in an area they had no idea he would have been.  The plane crashed into the side of the mountain at about 10,000 feet.  They are sure he died upon impact.  Animals got to his body and bones, drivers license and other items were found miles away from the crash site positively identifying him.
