Child-killer's parole reopens family's 28-year-old wounds
Canwest News Service
Published: Thursday, November 06, 2008

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. -- A Calgary child-killer and rapist was granted day parole for six months yesterday as his victim's family wept.

After a three-hour National Parole Board hearing, Harold David Smeltzer was told he will serve the time at a halfway house in Regina.

In 1981, Smeltzer was convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of five-year-old Kimberley Thompson and the rapes of at least three women in southwest Calgary.

Evelyn Thompson hadn't faced her daughter's killer since his trial 28 years ago, but she attended yesterday's hearing and wept openly during the emotional proceedings.

"I want him to stay in prison. I don't want him to see the light of day. She doesn't get a second chance, why should he?" Thompson said afterward. "Life is life. Not 10 years, not 20, not 25."

Thompson and six members of her family travelled to Prince Albert to read victim-impact statements -- the family's first. Evelyn's son, Brad Thompson, said he was sickened by Smeltzer's lack of remorse.

"He barely even acknowledged his part in her death," he said. "He barely even referenced her. She's dead and he gets to walk."

Smeltzer was 24 when he snatched the young girl on her way to kindergarten in Calgary on Jan. 24, 1980. He drowned her in his parents' bathtub and stuffed her naked body into a garbage can a few blocks from her home. Her frozen body was found the next day.

The murder shocked the country and stumped police for five months. Smeltzer eluded capture although was living just blocks from his victim.

He was arrested after an 11-year-old rape victim recognized him when he was out walking.

I couldn't agree with you more!! While I appreciate her continued coverage of this case, I wish she could be a little less rude and insulting to her guests and her panel. She practically yelled at Drew last night, and he answered her question in the first sentence. But the little fight between her and Nejame was hysterical, with LP snickering in the background!
She has definitely sensationalized this whole thing, from the get-go. It keeps her ratings up!

I wanted to mention something about the location of the meeting, the Tabu Nightclub.  The Tabu Nightclub doesn't even open until 10pm.  The meeting will be from 6-9pm.  So while you guys are having your meeting the place is closed to the general public.

What is going on?  Those who have obstructed and undermine the efforts of Tim Miller (TES) are now upholding and playing a key role in the search.  The flip flop does not make sense.

I am so afraid that some "volunteers" have been planted by the defense and ... the search is going to be compromised.

This Weekend’s Ground Search

Texas Equusearch's Search this Weekend
Our family and search team believe Caylee is still alive and we continue to follow up on thousands of leads and tips.  Kid Finders Network has been a wonderful resource for getting Caylee's photo and other vital search items out to the public since the day we learned of her disappearance.  We will continue keeping hope alive and have never stopped looking for Caylee despite what the public perception has been, but we support however the public can turn negative energy into a positive effort; whether supporting our search efforts or that of the efforts being made this weekend. If you wish to lend a helping hand please contact Tim Miller's group listed below and see how you can be a part of the solution and not the problem.  Together with Kid Finders Network, Tim Miller, and all of the volunteers working together to help bring home Caylee Marie we thank everyone!

NANCY GRACE
More Investigative Documents Released in Casey Anthony Murder Case
Aired November 6, 2008 - 20:00:00   ET

GRACE: I understand that your client, Cindy Anthony, has been very opposed in the past to Tim Miller with Equusearch coming and searching for possible remains of Caylee. Why?

NEJAME: That`s not correct. Tim is here with me right now. Tim and Cindy had a meeting in my office today...

GRACE: Recently. I said in the past.

NEJAME: Well, in the past, there was a misunderstanding. Cindy -- when Tim first came -- I think Tim can better speak to it. There was an understanding that he was coming here to search for a Caylee who was still with us. Tim ended up primarily doing a search, a ground search for a Caylee who`s no longer with us. And there was miscommunication, misunderstanding. Cindy fully supports and appreciates the people that are going out and assisting any positive way they can, whether they believe Caylee is with us or Caylee`s not with us.

And so that`s what we`ve been assisting them, is to communicate. Now there`s a full and complete understanding, and there were tears and there were hugs and there was an understanding. And I think that -- in fact, I know George and Cindy fully support everybody`s assistance, especially Tim`s, so that we can get some answers. And what`s being set up is a ground search and a live search. So we`ve got all answers for all people.

NANCY GRACE
Missing Toddler`s Mother Reportedly Turns Down Immunity Offer
Aired September 2, 2008 - 20:00:00   ET

GRACE: Miss Anthony, I know that you want more volunteers to show up to search. Is that correct?

C. ANTHONY: No. Actually, I don`t. I think it`s a waste of time searching in the woods behind, you know -- back by the airport and all that because, you know, I know Caylee is alive.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0809/02/ng.01.html

Since NeJame has said he is only in this to improve the public image of Cindy & George, could he be setting up to sell his story, using TES for credibility?

I think I know why Des, because they WILL find the body by Monday.  Somebody with the Anthony's told them, I think George.  He doesn't want Casey to get death.  I thought he was pointing out the area on the 30th.  However, I'm still wondering what she was doing way out on Beachline Expy in the middle of the night, June 30, took shower at Jesse's the next morning.

Jesse said she didn't look like someone who needed a shower so umm that really is curious.

Why?  Personally I want to see her rot in jail for the rest of her life.

I agree! The DP would let her suffer less. Rotting in jail sounds just fine to me.

Side note: It looks like God is going to bless us with very nice weather for this weekends search!

Maybe it's just naive thinking on my part but I'm interpreting the sudden warmth and interest in finding Caylee regardless of her state of being as an attempt by the defense to mend fences.  Somehow I think it has registered with the major players (or they have managed to tame the antagonistic beast) that playing nice will bring a better outcome.  Personally I think someone had a "tough love" talk with the family to help them see that non-cooperation was hurting Casey's defense.

I don't sense any attempt to sabotage the search whatsoever.  I rather think they are beginning to accept the inevitable and are now focusing strategies on how to best help Casey get the most lenient sentence.  They have to realize that the "not playing well with others" attitude is not going to appeal to the potential jury pool.

JMO, of course.

Hey DR ... you still here ?  Would like to talk to you about my bipolar posts the other night but don't want to on here, even though it pertained to CA.  Would it be okay if Klaas sent you my email address and we could talk that way?

Did anyone find this little piece of Cindy's interview interesting?

Q. OK, then George drove the car home and you followed him in your..

A. Yes, we parked it in the garage, opened everything up and took the battery out of it just in case someone came home to try to get the car we took the battery out of it. You never know.

Q. Someone being?

A. I don't know anybody. I have no idea, I'm not,  I don't want to speculate on something I don't know but that's our thought was.

I agree, also.  You can obtain the results without being so obnoxious.  I thought she would soften the edges after the babies but I think she's worsening. She has pre-made responses in her head and if those responses are not given immediately, she pounces on her guests.  I admire her stance on behalf of victims but she has such rage and anger in her voice and attitude when it is not necessary.  It is uncomfortable to be in a situation where a discussion becomes a hostile interrogation without cause.  That's how I feel watching her show.  Many times I find myself with sympathy toward the guest even though I may disagree with their opinion.  No one likes to see bullying...even if it's coming from the "good" side.
