Lots of tail-wagging on tap for first family
By Sandra Eckstein

(snip)
What kind of puppy the Obama girls will get.
It was a well-known fact that President-elect Barack Obama promised his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, that if they helped him campaign for president, they’d get the dog they’d been longing for. He pledged to make good on that promise in his speech Tuesday night.
That statement seemed to move up the timetable for getting the new pooch, too, possibly to Christmas.
The Obama girls aren’t the only ones who snagged a dog out of the presidential election —- Vice President-elect Joe Biden also was promised a dog if he won.
A lifetime dog owner, Biden told ABC News on Tuesday that when the last family dog died, his wife, Jill, nixed the idea of another pup because they weren’t home enough
. But then things changed, Biden said..
“When Barack called, Jill said, ‘I’ll make you a deal —- if you take the vice presidency and you get elected, you get a dog,’ ” Biden said, adding he wants a big dog because he’s had German shepherds, Great Danes, golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers in the past.
For the Obamas, the choice of pet is probably going to be a bit more difficult. In an interview on “Entertainment Tonight,” the couple said they planned to get a dog, but
Barack Obama said because Malia has allergies, they planned to get a hypoallergenic dog. Michelle Obama then added that they want to adopt a dog. “A rescue dog,” her husband said, nodding.
Dr. Amy Hirsh, of the Peachtree Allergy & Asthma Clinic in Buckhead and Vinings,
said there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, because all dogs give off the protein that causes allergic reactions in some people.
But some dogs, including poodles, some terriers, Maltese and bichon frise, give off less dander.
So at a shelter, the family likely will be looking into a very narrow field of dogs and hoping to find a puppy. It’s not impossible: Some 25 percent of the animals that enter shelters are pure-bred. Local dog rescuer Anne Stockton, head of Small Dog Rescue and Humane Society, said she’s often amazed at what comes into area shelters and rescue groups.

There are many good sources for a rescue dog. A good place to start is -
www.Petfinder.com
There are many high-kill shelters with low dander dogs and puppies that get euthanized. Whole litters of purebred and mixes remain homeless and are put down along with their mom. Shelters in mid to southern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky come to mind.

I have to believe that somewhere, among the millions of animals (young and old) that are euthanized every year, there are sone that would make fine pets for the Obama and Biden families.
With all the Obama internet and email connections, I am sure it would be an easy thing to save an animal.

Yes We Can (Adopt)

But for now I wanted to congratulate and welcome Barack Obama, and ask you to join me in signing this online thank you card. Mr. Obama and his wife Michelle had previously announced they would adopt the puppy they’d promised to their daughters—and here’s a chance to show our gratitude for that right choice. This is, after all, National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, the perfect time to highlight the importance of adopting animals from shelters.

Many people who want a specific breed of dog know little or nothing about the breed. They make their selection based upon shallow exposure such as movies or TV shows. For instance, Eddie, the Jack Russell Terrier of "Frazier" fame resulted in a huge increase in the number of families who just HAD to have a JRT. Sadly, many of those JRT's ended up in shelters or worse. Eddie (whose real name was "Moose") was also an abandoned shelter dog who was, in true terrier fashion, almost incorrigible. JRT's are among the MOST difficult breed of dogs to own and train. Same with Dalmations. That damned movie "1001 Dalmations", resulted in a horrid run on Dalmation puppies. Puppymills began pumping them out like crazy to meet the demand for the adorable little spotted creatures. Many of whom ultimately ended up in shelters or worse. Dalmations are a very challenging breed of dog, and, by some estimates, nearly 30% of them are born congenitally deaf, making training even more difficult. In our organization, I cannot tell you how many people decide they have to have a Cairn because, as they invariably state, "The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie and I just LOVE Toto!" Toto, too, was given up as an incorrigible canine who, true to the breed, was very VERY difficult to housebreak and way too independent to be cowed and trained easily.

Join the Revolution—Make a Difference Today!
President-Elect Barack Obama and PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk share a resolute belief: Change can happen. He said it and she wrote about it in her new book, One Can Make a Difference! There is no greater time in history than now to get active, participate, and change the world!

Does President-Elect Obama Bring Hope for Animals?
Here's PETA's official statement:
Quote
President-elect Barack Obama has said, "I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other. And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals."
Because PETA is devoted to fighting animal abuse and recognizes the link between cruelty to animals and violence directed against humans, the organization is very encouraged by this statement.
PETA is also pleased that Obama and his wife, Michelle, have announced that they will adopt a rescued dog for their daughters instead of patronizing a pet store or breeder. PETA opposes large-scale breeding facilities, known as "puppy mills," as well as private breeders who bring puppies and kittens into the world while nearly 4 millions cats and dogs must be euthanized at the nation's extremely crowded animal shelters every year. PETA supports animal shelters and encourages all prospective companion animal guardians to visit their local shelter.
Quote
PETA looks forward to working with President-elect Obama and the new administration to help create change for the millions of animals who suffer unnecessarily in this country. What's next? If his stance on other animal issues is any indication, perhaps the next president will put a tofu chicken in every pot.

Will there be walking or more president elect verbalizing?

The article in today's Chicago Tribune indicated that Obama might just buy a dog from AKC. Please tell me it isn't true.

Anna, it's not true, as far as I can tell. I just read that article and I didn't get the impression that the Obamas might go back on their promise to adopt a shelter dog at all. Of course the AKC wants to get their plug in, but I'm sure Michelle Obama knows it's far more humane and admirable to adopt from a shelter.

I recommend a pedigreed Poodle. They don't shed. A white or black Royal Standard Poodle.
Malia and Sasha are not well suited to any breed of small dogs.

One of the tenets of Judaism is to treat our animals very well. We feed them before we eat.

I agree, Louise. I love Standard Poodles. My favorite colors are black and apricot. I'll add that "Diva" would be a great name for a female Standard Poodle.
I've thought about this, obviously.
