Arizona Police Search for Missing Mom, 3-Year-Old Daughter
Saturday , November 08, 2008

Arizona police are searching for a missing Avondale woman and her 3-year-old daughter, who allegedly were kidnapped from their home on or around Friday.

Liliana Beatrice Iboa, 20, and Karen Bianay Cervantes were reported missing by Iboa's husband, Benito Cervantes Mena, on Friday night.

Mena told police he had been out of town when he received a call Friday morning from an unidentified male suspect claiming he had his wife and daughter. The caller demanded a ransom.

When Mena got home he found his home had been broken into and burglarized. He told police he did not report the incident right away because he feared his family would be harmed.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Avondale Police Department at 623-333-7001.

Last Update: 2:01 pm

An Avondale woman and her daughter were kidnapped from their home near 129th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard Thursday night or Friday morning, according to police officials.

They say 20-year-old Liliana Iboa and her toddler daughter were reported missing by Iboa's husband at about 10 p.m. Friday.

Benito Cervantes Mena, 26, told police he was out of town when he received a call earlier Friday from an unidentified man who said he had his wife and 3-year-old daughter Karen.

The caller demanded money for their release, according to police.

When Mena returned home, he reportedly found the house had been broken into and burglarized.

He told police he didn't call earlier because he feared his family would be hurt.

Neighbors say the family is new to the neighborhood.

Police say they were specifically targeted.  They would not specify the dollar amount the kidnappers were demanding except to say that it was in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information to call the Avondale Police Department at 623-333-7001.

Missing girl tells police she's OK.

SPRINGFIELD - A teenage girl whose disappearance over a month ago sparked fears of an abduction has told a Springfield detective that she ran away voluntarily with her boyfriend because her parents did not approve of the relationship.

Liliana Biatriz Iboa, 15, called Detective Tom Rappe on Wednesday and said she was fine, Springfield police said. She would not say where she was, but investigators have learned that she may have fled to Mexico with 21-year-old Benito Cervantes Mena, who uses the name Ramon Cervantes. The detective encouraged the former Sheldon High School student to contact her parents in Eugene. He then called them himself to tell them about the phone call, police said.

Iboa disappeared Aug. 30 after working a late shift at a Springfield Mexican restaurant. Her parents filed a runaway report, but when police learned of an unsettling phone call in which Iboa cried to her parents before the line was abruptly disconnected, they stepped up their investigation. Friends of the girl said they had been in touch with her since she vanished and rebutted the parents' assertion that their daughter was taken against her will. Iboa is once again being treated as a runaway, police said.
