Saluting veterans

The Intelligencer

OUR IMAGE OF VETERANS grows dated. While the grizzled men in overseas caps waving from convertibles is still a common site at Veterans Day parades, those who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam are today kept company by a growing battalion of younger vets.

Such are the unyielding challenges to freedom and democracy that nearly every generation of Americans has been called to fight. It is with deep gratitude and solemn respect that today we recognize all of the men and women — young and old — who came to the defense of our nation.

We are greatly indebted.

Yet we can never fully repay them; so many came home unwhole, or not at all. And so we honor them.

Thank you MuffyBee-
I'm a milspouse, and DH has deployed for over 25 months to Iraq, during this operation. It is so important for them (our troops) to know and feel that our country and it's people back home love them and support their sacrifices.

One of the sweetest moments I have ever had, was at ATL airport waiting for DH to come home..For those of you who don't know, They have a USO desk there with several people to greet the returning soldiers. It's a completely unexplainable feeling..watching your loved one come up those escalators only to be met by the clapping of hands, whistles, tears of all of the people waiting..especially the USO members. They greet each one with a hug and handshake, and give them a little goody bag to show their appreciation. They take the time to have a conversation with them, and let them know how proud they are of them. It is really heart warming to see..

I hope it is okay Muffy, I wanted to post the link to USO...?

Thanking and Remembering all our Veterans on Veteran's Day here in the US and Rememberance Day in Australia and Canada.

Thanks to your DH nicnic. You are both very much appreciated.

My thoughts are especially with the Family of a young man, a friend of my DD, who lost his life in Iraq last year.

Without these ultimate sacrifices we would not have our Freedom.

Some Gave All

I knew a man called him Sandy Kane
Few folks even knew his name
But a hero was he
Left a boy, came back a man
Still many just don't understand
About the reasons we are free

I can't forget the look in his eyes
Or the tears he cries
As he said these words to me

All gave some and some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall
Some gave all

Now Sandy Kane is no longer here
But his words are oh so clear
As they echo through out our land
For all his friends who gave us all
Who stood the ground and took the fall
To help their fellow man

Love your country and live with pride
And don't forget those who died America can't you see

All gave some and some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall
Some gave all

And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall, yes recall
Some gave all

Some gave all

Words are not enough to describe the gratitude in my heart for all service men and women who have made sacrifices to serve our wonderful country.  I have a cousin who has just returned from Iraq, thankfully, so this is even more personal to me this year.  I also am thankful for the families of all of the service men and women who have also made sacrifices, I pray for you all.  God Bless all of our veterans, and God Bless America!

Thank you to all U.S. soldiers past and present, for giving us freedoms we often take for granted.

FYI, Five for Fighting is a hockey term -- 5 minutes in the penalty box for fighting.  Some think it's about war when they see this video and are unfamiliar with the group.

There is a memorial just up the street from where I live.  It stands there as a testament to all who have made the sacrifice for my freedom.  If you stand in the center and look around there is a modest brick home that a Viet Nam Veteran lives in now.  He can see this memorial from his front yard. He was wounded in the shoulder trying to save the life of another soldier in battle.  His body is now afflicted with Parkinson's and he has suffered from PTSD for years.  All due to his exposure to Agent Orange...yet he has two American flags at his home.

Across the road there is another man that lives each day as a Korean War Veteran.  He was so happy when a young man at the local high school came up with the idea of a memorial to honor our war heroes in this small Alabama town.  He too is getting on in years and yet I saw him walk with a walker to take a look yesterday as the elementary children were visiting the memorial.

If you turn to your right and look straight across a small trickling branch that winds along the side of the road you will see an old white frame house where one of the last World War II veterans lived until about 2 years ago when he died at the age of 90.  He never saw this memorial, but he would be proud of it.  He was at Normandy when they stormed the beach there and he spent time in both France and Germany.  He saw the results of the concentration camps and the destruction from that war.  He was my father.

Shortly after this memorial was finished I would watch elderly men stop by and stand quietly and wipe tears from their eyes.  That told me that all the efforts of the students and the veteran's that made it happen were well worth each and every brick laid in the hot sun to remember the people that have kept us free for all these years.  Let us never forget their sacrifice and their love for the United States of America.  God bless all of them on this Veteran's Day.
