Farrah Fawcett Funeral Today
Updated: Tuesday, 30 Jun 2009, 12:25 PM EDT

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A private funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon for actress Farrah Fawcett, who died Thursday at the age of 62 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Church officials say the service is set for 4 p.m. PDT.

The service, which is closed to the public and the media, will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. RadarOnline.com has posted images of the cathedral.

According to UPI.com , Fawcett's son, Redmond O'Neal, will be temporarily released to attend her funeral. O'Neal is serving a jail sentence for violating probation on drug charges.

A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, and best known for her role in TV's "Charlie's Angels," Fawcett chronicled her battle with cancer in a documentary called "Farrah's Story" that aired last month.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations to support cancer research be made to The Farrah Fawcett Foundation, P.O. Box 6478, Beverly Hills, Calif., 90212.

Word is all three "Charlie's Angels" will be in attendance, Kate, Jaclyn & Cheryl.   The media is setting up outside the church, Foxnews said there may be a media feed inside but not allowed in the private service.

From clips and people that were at the service, it was said to be beautiful.  Ryan and Redman read.   They showed Ryan actually helped carry her casket from the church, man that had to be so difficult.  Ryan is hosting a celebration in her honor, details were not released that I heard.  As Charlie would say, Good Night Angel.

Farrah's Funeral: 'Goodbye Sweet Girl'
By Eunice Oh
Originally posted Tuesday June 30, 2009 09:40 PM EDT
A tearful Ryan and Redmond O'Neal joined Farrah Fawcett's closest friends and family for the actress's private funeral Tuesday afternoon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

Marla Maples, Joan Collins and Tatum O'Neal were among the 200 guests attending the hour-long Catholic service, where longtime pal Alana Stewart and Fawcett's doctor Lawrence Piro delivered the eulogies.

"Goodbye sweet girl," said Stewart. "[Farrah] never felt sorry for herself during her illness ... she fought cancer furiously."

'Angel in Heaven'
"She's the most beautiful angel in heaven," Stewart added. "She always seemed so indestructible."

With city police and private security lining the streets, Ryan and Redmond arrived at the cathedral around 3:50 p.m. and served as pallbearers, carrying Fawcett's casket, adorned with yellow and orange flowers.

A man in a kilt played "Amazing Grace" on a bagpipe at the beginning of the service, which also included Bible readings and prayer.

After the service ended, vans shuttled guests to the reception at the Jonathan Club, where a band played Fawcett's favorite songs, including some from Van Morrison.

Farrah Fawcett's life celebrated at LA funeral
By SANDY COHEN AP Entertainment Writer © 2009 The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — The life of "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett was celebrated Tuesday at a private funeral in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Her longtime companion, Ryan O'Neal, 68, was among pallbearers who accompanied the casket, covered in yellow and orange flowers, into the Roman Catholic cathedral.
Fawcett's friend Alana Stewart and "Charlie's Angels" co-star Kate Jackson were among early arrivals before the hearse pulled up, accompanied by 10 motorcycle officers.
Fans and news media watched from across a street. The service was closed to the public.
The funeral program said Fawcett's and O'Neal's 24-year-old son, Redmond, was to do the service's first reading. He has been jailed in a drug case but received a judge's permission to attend the funeral. He was not seen outside the cathedral, however.
The program, which featured a photograph of a smiling Fawcett, also said Ryan O'Neal was to read the 23rd Psalm. and eulogies were to be given by Stewart and Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett's cancer specialist.
Fawcett died Thursday at age 62 after a public battle with cancer. O'Neal and Stewart were at her side.
"After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away," O'Neal said in a statement last week. "Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."
Diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2006, Fawcett's battle with the disease was documented in "Farrah's Story," which aired last month on NBC.
Stewart, a producer of the documentary, said Fawcett was "much more than a friend; she was my sister."
"Although I will miss her terribly, I know in my heart that she will always be there as that angel on the shoulder of everyone who loved her," Stewart said in a statement.
Redmond O'Neal was jailed April 5 on drug charges.
Last week, a judge granted his request to attend Fawcett's funeral. The order by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jane Godfrey allows Redmond O'Neal to be released for three hours and wear street clothes to attend the funeral.

It could happen to you

The dangers of anal cancer, HPV and smoking

It would not have caught public attention if it did not caused the death of a legendary Hollywood icon. On June 25, Farrah Fawcett, known for her role as Jill Munroe in the 1970s TV series Charlie’s Angels died of anal cancer. Fawcett’s battle with the disease lasted for three years.

Following Fawcett’s passing, there is a clamor to know more about anal cancer—of the nature of this rare disease that afflict the most private part of the human body.

Anal cancer is a rare malignancy that starts in the anus and is different from the common colorectal cancer. The latter involves cancerous growth in the colon, rectum and appendix as opposed to the former whose beginning stage was confined in the anus.

The majority of anal cancers are diagnosed among patients who are between 50 and 80 years old. Anal cancer when detected early is highly curable. Based on the estimates of the American Cancer Society, there were 5,070 new cases of anal cancer in the United States last year and there were just 680 people who died from the disease in the country.

Dr. Romarico Azores, a colorectal surgeon said that most cases of anal cancer were left undetected because they were mistaken as hemorrhoids. He advises individuals with hemorrhoids to get a thorough check up from a colorectal surgeon to determine if the tissue growth is benign or malignant. “Anal cancer is curable if it was detected very early,” he says.

While there are cases of anal cancer that display no symptoms prior to detection, bleeding and unusual discharge in the anus is the most common indicator of the disease. Debbie Saslow, PhD, of the American Cancer Society warns, “Any time people have symptoms, they need to get it checked out even if they think they know what it is. Anal cancer is rare, so it is not on many people’s radar screens.” Other signs of the disease to watch out for are a lump near the anus, persistent pain and pressure in the anal area as well as change in bowel habits.

The diagnostic procedure for anal cancer ranges from the basic digital rectal examination to the more sophisticated anoscopy, proctoscopy and endorectal ultrasound. The treatment of the disease may involve a combination of any of the following: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

While the cause of anal cancer is still largely unknown, a substantial amount of data point to its connection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). The American Cancer Society reports that 85 percent of anal cancer cases are associated with persistent HPV infection.

The other risk factors named by both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute for contracting anal cancer are being over 50 years old, having many sexual partners, having receptive anal intercourse, having a weakened immune system, frequent anal redness and soreness, and being a smoker. Though smoking is always associated with lung cancer, medical research has identified an increased rate of anal cancer among smokers.

Azores warns that the practice of anal sex leads to the development of anal warts that increases the risk of developing anal cancer. He also points to genetics as an additional causative factor of the disease.

February 2, 2010

The troubled son of Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett is headed back to a residential drug treatment program after being in custody since late December on a probation violation stemming from a series of drug offenses, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Redmond O'Neal, 25, was remanded into sheriff's custody Dec. 29 and then sent back to an in-custody drug treatment program a week later. But the decision by Judge Michael Tynan means O'Neal will be freed from custody to resume his treatment in a residential drug program, authorities said.

O'Neal was jailed last year after he was found in possession of heroin during a routine security check by deputies at the parking lot of the Pitchess Detention Center.

On Sept. 18, a judge sentenced O'Neal to three years formal probation and a six-year suspended sentence stemming from that case. He had been attending a court-ordered drug program.

In September 2008, he and his father were charged with felony drug possession after the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, conducting a search at Ryan O'Neal's Malibu home, reportedly found methamphetamine in the actor's bedroom and on the younger O'Neal.
At the time, Redmond O'Neal was on probation after a guilty plea in June 2008 to felony drug possession and misdemeanor driving under the influence. The charges stemmed from his arrest while driving in Malibu carrying heroin and methamphetamine. His plea allowed him to avoid jail time. He was sentenced to three years' probation and $1,688 in fines for the DUI charge.

Against the backdrop of his struggles with drug addiction, O'Neal also had to deal with the June 2009 death of his mother from cancer.

Fawcett omission from Oscar segment no accident

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The executive director of the film academy said Tuesday that Farrah Fawcett wasn't included in the Academy Awards' In Memoriam segment because the actress was better known as a TV star.

It was a difficult decision for the committee that assembles the segment to omit Fawcett, said Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences executive director Bruce Davis, who added that he's not surprised some fans and family members are upset.

Fawcett's family issued a statement through a publicist Tuesday saying they were "deeply saddened" and "bereft with this exclusion of such an international icon who inspired so many for so many reasons."

Davis said the academy committee "was kind of figuring that probably the Farrah Fawcett and Gene Barry omissions would be the ones we'd get the most comments on." He acknowledged that he "did get one letter about Miss Fawcett."

After much discussion by the committee, Fawcett and Barry were both omitted from the necrology sequence. Davis and his colleagues thought that while the two actors appeared in movies, they were better known for their "remarkable television work" and would be more appropriately honored by the television academy at the Emmy Awards.

Davis said "an unusual number of extremely distinguished screenwriters" died this year, and the academy tried to honor many of them in the short memorial segment.

"In every category, you're going to miss some wonderful people," said Davis, who has helped assemble Oscar's In Memoriam montage since it began in 1993.

When asked why Michael Jackson was included when actors were left out, Davis explained that Jackson had appeared in a popular theatrical film recently. Fawcett and Jackson both died on June 25.

"Think of all the blogging we would have gotten if we had left him out!" he said.

Still, he said he understands that the Fawcett and Barry omissions sting.

"There's nothing you can say to people, particularly to family members, within a day or two of the show that helps at all," Davis said. "They tend to be surprised and hurt, and we understand that and we're sorry for it."

It would have been very touching if the Academy had Ryan O'Neal and Patrick Swayze's wife present the memorial tribute. Instead they were buffoons.
