Two Officers Die of Injuries From a Bomb
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: December 13, 2008

WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) — A bomb technician and another police officer have died of injuries from an explosion at a bank, the Oregon State Police said on Saturday.

The bomb exploded inside a West Coast Bank branch here late Friday afternoon, also seriously injuring the Woodburn police chief, Scott Russell, the state police said.

Before the detonation, a bank branch nearby received a call that was “a potential bomb threat,” but the police searched and found nothing, said the West Coast Bank president, Bob Sznewajs. He said his bank then got a call “from an unknown person saying that we should look for one as well.”

Mr. Sznewajs said an employee saw a device in the bushes near the bank and called the authorities, who decided to move the device inside the branch. They apparently scanned it, and it went off, he said.

Ore. bank blast kills police officer, bomb expert

By BRAD CAIN
Associated Press Writer

WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) -- A bomb explosion at a bank killed both a police officer and a state bomb disposal technician, and no suspects are yet in custody, officials said Saturday.

"That person is dangerous and needs to be found as soon as possible," said Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

The explosion occurred Friday afternoon at a West Coast Bank branch office in the agricultural town of Woodburn, which is nearly 30 miles south of Portland.

Police went to check on a telephoned bomb threat received by a Wells Fargo branch bank in the center of town and found a suspicious device, but that device was determined to be harmless. But police said the investigation there led them to the nearby West Coast office where the bomb was found.

Police wouldn't discuss a possible motive for the bombing. Hastings said he didn't know of any grudges against the West Coast Bank.

Woodburn police Capt. Tom Tennant and state Senior Trooper William Hakim, both 51, died at the scene.

Woodburn police Chief Scott Russell, 46, was injured and in stable but critical condition at a Portland hospital.

State police said the inside of the bank was extensively damaged, and a female employee was treated at a hospital and released. Another bank employee was uninjured.

Hastings declined to describe the bomb in detail but indicated it was powerful.

A bank employee found the bomb in bushes outside the bank, and it exploded after officers took it inside.

Hastings said he did not know why the officers took the bomb inside.

Police sealed the area around the bank, and it remained closed Saturday. "There's no indication of further devices," Hastings said.

Federal authorities said Saturday they were offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Woodburn has a population of about 21,000 people.

Police charge Oregon man with murder in bank bombing
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A 32-year-old steelworker is charged with murder and other crimes after a bomb explosion at a bank that killed two law enforcers and critically injured a third, officials said Monday.

Joshua A. Turnidge was arrested Sunday after police released surveillance photographs of him, the Marion County district attorney's office said. Officials did not identify him until Monday.

Court officials didn't know Monday whether Turnidge had an attorney. He is to be arraigned Tuesday.

The announcement didn't say what led officers to Turnidge but said it wasn't the "direct result" of a tip from the public. Investigators have not disclosed information about a motive.

Turnidge was arrested in Salem, where he lives, about 20 miles south of Woodburn, where the bomb exploded Friday at a West Coast Bank branch office.

Officers thought Oregon bank bomb was a hoax
Associated Press
Dec. 16, 2008, 1:09PM
SALEM, Ore. — Two law enforcement officers killed in a bank bombing last week believed the device was a hoax and were trying to open it when it exploded, according to court documents released today.

A probable cause statement in the case of bombing suspect Joshua Turnidge says a state trooper inspected and X-rayed a green metal box found Friday outside the West Coast Bank building in Woodburn.

The document says Oregon State Police Senior Trooper William Hakim, a bomb disposal technician, was confident it was a hoax device, so he took it inside.

The statement says a bank employee saw Hakim trying to open it while Woodburn Capt. Tom Tennant held it, and then it exploded.

Hakim and Tennant were killed. Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell was critically injured. The bank employee was treated at Salem Hospital and released.

According to the statement, last Friday at 10:19 a.m. a man call in a bomb threat to the Wells Fargo Bank in Woodburn, which is close to the West Coast Bank branch. The man said "if 'they' didn't leave the building, all of them would die," the court document states.

The man also said a cell phone would be found next to a garbage can, and that he would give further instructions on the cell phone.

Local police officers arrived at the Wells Fargo building and spotted a cell phone on top of what appeared to be a package. Hakim and an FBI bomb technician also arrived, examined the package and cell phone, and determined it was a hoax device.

Woodburn police searched the area around the two banks for other devices, and a green metal box was spotted next to the West Coast Bank building.

Hakim, Tennant and Russell went to the West Coast Bank as well. After Hakim inspected and X-rayed the green box, he said he was confident it was a "hoax device" and that it could be "taken apart to be placed into evidence."

Hakim brought the green box into the bank to work on it, with help from Tennant and Russell, and it detonated.

Turnidge appeared in court this morning for the first time. He was assigned a court-appointed attorney and did not enter a plea. His next scheduled court date is Dec. 26.

Father of suspect arrested in Oregon bombing
Tue Dec 16, 2008 7:05pm EST
PORTLAND, Ore., Dec 16 (Reuters) - Police on Tuesday arrested the father of a suspect in an Oregon bank bombing that killed two police officers and wounded another last week.

Bruce Turnidge, 57, of rural Salem, Oregon, was arrested on Tuesday morning on charges of conspiracy to manufacture and to possess an explosive device, the Marion County District Attorney's office said in a statement.

The bomb that Turnidge and his son, Joshua Turnidge, 32, are accused of building exploded in a bank on Friday in Woodburn, a small town about 30 miles (50 km) south of Portland.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive.

Law enforcement officials responded to a report of a bomb threat at the Wells Fargo bank in Woodburn on Friday morning, police said. A device found there was harmless, but it led investigators to a nearby West Coast Bank branch.

There, a second device was discovered outside the bank. State and Woodburn police took it into the evacuated bank, where it detonated, instantly killing two officers and injuring a third.

The younger Turnidge could face the death penalty. He is facing 13 charges, including aggravated murder, and at a hearing on Friday morning he requested a court-appointed lawyer. He is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 26. (Reporting by Dan Cook; Editing by Peter Henderson)
