Police: Father ordered to pay child support kills son
By JANET McCONNAUGHEY
Associated Press
Jan. 3, 2009, 9:59PM
NEW ORLEANS — A man who initially told police gunmen kidnapped his 2½-year-old son was arrested Saturday, accused of committing an "extremely hideous" murder because he was ordered to pay child support, Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

Danny Platt confessed, told police where to find the child's body and will be booked on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Ja' Shawn Powell, Riley said at a news conference.

"He had said he would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," which he recently had been ordered to do, Riley said.

Riley said he did not know the amount of child support and would not describe how the boy was killed, saying the coroner would do that after the autopsy was complete. The coroner's spokesman did not immediately return a call.

"The mother is in a safe place," Riley said.

Although he had visiting rights, Platt, 22, of New Orleans, had never visited the boy until he picked him up Friday, Riley said.

Police put out a notice Saturday asking people to look for the boy and saying his father had told them three men with dreadlocks and AK-47 rifles had piled out of an SUV and kidnapped Ja' Shawn shortly before midnight Friday.

"His story never really added up," Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."

Riley said Platt eventually confessed and told officers where to find the body.

Police spokesman officer Janssen Valencia said he did not know if Platt has an attorney.

Platt had only a couple of "very minor" previous arrests, Riley said.

"How does an individual — because he's ordered to pay child support to take care of a kid ... believe that this is so much pressure that he would face — he would do this hideous act to his own child, or to any child, and think that is a remedy to paying child support?" Riley said. "I mean there are some sick individuals in this society, and this gentleman is clearly one."

Father kills 2-year-old son, dumps him in park, police say
January 03, 2009, 9:40 PM

New Orleans police said Saturday that a dispute about $4,000 in child support payments prompted a 22-year-old man to kill his 2-year-old son, dump his body in a playground and concoct an elaborate story about the boy's abduction.

Detectives escorted Danny Platt, 22, into jail Saturday evening and booked him with first-degree murder in the death of his son, Ja'Shawn Powell, less than 24 hours earlier.

His hands cuffed behind his back, his head hanging low, his eyes red and wet, Platt said, "I'm sorry about killing my baby."  Rolling Eyes

Platt had confessed to detectives at midday and led them to an overgrown section of a Central City playground where he had dumped the boy's body in a bag, police said.

Platt told police that he did not want to pay the child support he owed to the boy's mother and that he had previously threatened violence over the money.

"He had made some comments that he would kill either the wife or the child before he paid child support," NOPD Superintendent Warren Riley said at a news conference.

Ja'Shawn had big brown eyes, chubby cheeks and a stain on his baby teeth.

His 48-pound body was discovered in a section of Van McMurray Park, behind a house in the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue.

John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner's office, declined to confirm the identity of the victim or release the cause of death. He said only that a body had been found in a bag Saturday and that an autopsy will be done today.

Tale of abduction

On Friday night, Platt told investigators that a group of men wielding AK-47s had taken the boy after confronting the father and son at a Central City street corner, just blocks from where the body was later found.

State Police issued an advisory Saturday morning, and the New Orleans Police Department issued an Amber Alert and a description of the missing boy. Within hours, though, the father's story began to fall apart.

"His story never really added up," Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."

Police said Platt, who lives in the 2800 block of Baronne Street, told investigators that he and Ja'Shawn were standing at Jackson Avenue and Brainard Street on Friday around 11:30 p.m. when three men forced him to the ground at gunpoint. He said the men took his son and fled in a dark 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon with black-tinted windows and shiny paint.

Ja'Shawn's mother, Daniella Powell, said in an interview with WWL-TV that Platt recently had been ordered to pay more than $4,000 in child support and that it had become a point of contention between the two.

On Friday around 8:30 p.m., Platt called her, asking to spend the weekend with Ja'Shawn, she said. He picked up the toddler shortly thereafter.

He called back several hours later to say the child had been kidnapped, then quickly hung up, Powell said.

Powell said Platt told her he had reported the abduction to police, but when Powell called the police herself, she was told he had not called.

Powell told the station that Platt changed his story several times, first telling her that a woman had taken Ja'Shawn, then saying a group of men took the child after looking for a man named Johnny and asking for money.

Platt and Powell were separated, police said. Platt had visitation rights, though he had never taken advantage of them before.

'A lot of pressure'

The suspected motive for the slaying shocked even veteran homicide detectives.

"This incident and the manner in which he killed his child was extremely hideous," Riley said, wondering aloud how someone could use murder as a remedy for paying child support.

"There are some sick individuals in this society, and this gentleman is clearly one," he said.

During his short walk to jail in front of cameras and reporters, Platt said there were a "whole bunch of reasons" for killing his son. "I had a lot of pressure on me," he said. He didn't elaborate.

Police and FBI agents worked through the night after the abduction report.

Then, shortly after noon Saturday, detectives cordoned off part of the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue. Gagliano and crime scene technicians appeared. They traipsed through an unkempt lot and an alley alongside a house.

With the rain coming down, they held umbrellas high and stared at the ground near the park's baseball backstop, a dozen or so yards from a colorful jungle gym.

Gagliano backed his car up the alley. He didn't need the transport van or a gurney. The toddler's body fit in the trunk.

La. dad accused of killing son owed $4,000
Associated Press
Jan. 4, 2009, 5:40PM
NEW ORLEANS — Danny Platt said he was under a lot of pressure. He apparently owed his estranged wife $4,000 in back child support.

But there were no signs of stress when the 22-year-old father, accused of killing his 2-year-old son over the child support debt, went to pick up his little boy for a weekend visit, the child's mother said on Sunday.

On Friday, several hours after her son, Ja' Shawn, left, Daniella Powell received a phone call. It was Platt. He said their son had been kidnapped and quickly hung up.

Powell called back in disbelief. She said her husband gave different accounts of the kidnapping. She asked if he had called police. He said he had, but when she called authorities, they hadn't heard from him.

Police said Platt made up an elaborate story about his son being kidnapped by three men armed with AK-47 rifles late Friday. Platt eventually confessed to the killing, telling authorities he "would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," Police Superintendent Warren Riley said Saturday.

Later, he led police to the boy's body. He has been booked on a charge of first-degree murder.

On Saturday night, as he was being led to jail in handcuffs, Platt said he was under a lot of pressure and acknowledged killing his son, but disputed the slaying occurred solely over the debt to his estranged wife.

"I'm sorry about killing my baby," Platt told reporters. "I had a whole bunch of reasons."

It's not clear whether Platt has an attorney. Telephone messages left Sunday for New Orleans police and the coroner's office were not immediately returned.

Powell said Sunday the two never had any violent fights and Platt wasn't going through any emotional problems.

"He knew what he was doing. He killed my 2-year-old son," she said.

Powell said her son's body was found in a plastic bag at a park. She and her family were busy preparing her son's funeral arrangements.

"I don't have money for anything. We are trying to come up with it now," Powell said.

Police said Saturday in announcing the arrest that Platt hadn't seen his son in quite some time. Powell said Platt had taken the boy trick-or-treating on Halloween, but acknowledged they hadn't spoken for a couple of months. However, she didn't think it was odd Platt wanted to spend the weekend with his son.

Ja 'Shawn was excited about seeing his father, she said. "He went to the door and said, 'Daddy' when he came to pick him up," she said.

Coroner Frank Minyard said the toddler's throat had been cut, and he bled to death. On Saturday, Chief Coroner's Investigator John Gagliano kept the bag holding Ja'Shawn's body close to him, placing it gently on the back seat of his car for the trip from the crime scene to the morgue. http://www.nowpublic.com/world/new-orleans-jashawns-grieving-mom-shares-memories-regrets

There are so people in this world who do not deserve the unconditional love of a child nor to hear the words, "Daddy's here!"

Father charged with murder for slashing throat of 2-year-old son Ja'Shawn Powell
By Gwen Filosa, The Times-Picayune
April 24, 2009, 9:16AM

An Orleans Parish grand jury Thursday indicted a man on charges of first-degree murder in the death of his 2-year-old son just after New Year's Day amid a dispute with the boy's mother over $4,000 in overdue child support.

Danny Platt, 22, told police that kidnappers wielding assault rifles snatched his son Ja'Shawn Powell, but later confessed as deputies led him to jail on Jan. 3 -- the day investigators found the boy dumped near a Central City playground inside an athletic bag.

"I'm sorry about killing my baby, " a handcuffed and red-eyed Platt said as detectives escorted him to Central Lockup. "I had a lot of pressure on me. . . . I had a whole bunch of reasons."

Platt told reporters, "No, sir, " when asked whether he killed the boy over child support.

Platt, whose criminal record in the Criminal District Court is a lone misdemeanor marijuana charge that was later dismissed, now faces death by lethal injection or life in prison if convicted of capital murder.

Ja'Shawn's body was found in an athletic bag in the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue, in a yard that shares a vine-covered fence with Van McMurray Park. The toddler's throat had been slashed and he bled to death, the coroner said.

Platt remains jailed without bond.

Platt had threatened the child's mother over his child-support debt, police said, vowing that he would kill one or the other before paying up.

On Jan. 2, a Friday night, Platt told police that a group of men with AK-47s had taken the boy after confronting the father and son at a Central City street corner, just blocks from where the body was later found.

Police and FBI agents worked through the night, but always found Platt's elaborate story a little hard to swallow.

"His story never really added up, " Police Superintendent Warren Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."

Platt had been working at a French Quarter restaurant when the child-support issue arose, said the baby's mother, Daniella Powell.

To collect the child-support debt, the state deducted a little more than $100 each week from Platt's paychecks, Powell said. The amount was determined in December after a blood test proved his paternity, she said.

Powell said she had to pursue Platt as the baby's biological father because she had applied for food stamps, which requires applicants to identify noncustodial parents, and for Medicaid.

In an interview with The Times-Picayune shortly after her son's corpse was found, Powell said that Platt had never raised his voice or hand to her, and that she had known him most of her life.

Ja'Shawn was born Feb. 14, 2006, a Valentine's Day baby. His father first saw him when he was 4 months old, the mother said.

Fresh from a nap the evening of Jan. 2, Ja'Shawn ran to the door saying, "Daddy, daddy, daddy, " Powell said, adding "He was so happy." She kissed her baby goodbye for the last time and watched him leave with Platt for the weekend.

The coroner's investigator carried Ja'Shawn's body out without a van. The 48-pound body fit in a trunk.
