US AIRWAYS jet in the hudson river... passengers on wings!

Got it on now (Fox News) Kim, thanks!

That water must be soooooo COLD, those poor people! Hope they're all ok!!!

i KNOW! sister in boston says it is sooooooooooooooo cold there!

the plane is sinking according to shep smith

How horrible.  I hope they can get to them soon.

As always...I swoon for Shep! Smile

I work for one of the legacy carriers and did Emergency Response for most of my 10 years here.  The plane is bouyant and will float for a while but it wouldn't have sunk immediately unless the fuselage had cracked and had taken on water.  Birdstrikes can cause major damage and could have caused this, we have several birdstrikes a year but normally we can turn the aircraft around.  The people will be fine and the rafts would have been deployed immediately.  Pilots practice for this all the time and he did an amazing job.

News crews won't have an accurate count of souls on board until US releases it.  Right after an accident, the manifest is locked down, first responders are called and only then is the manifest released to the team.  Verifiction has to made along with the reconciled airport report and that takes at least an hour depending on the size of the aircraft.  Once that happens, an accurate count is passed along and notifications are then made.

We practice, alot.  It looks like everyone will make it off ok, thank God for that!!!  And thank God for well trained pilots and trained responders!!!!

NP.  The pax will be taken to a staging site, checked over by emergency personnel and the airline will assign an escort to each passenger or family.  Everything they need will be provided for - food, clothing, phone calls.    Arrangements will be provided for family members to travel to the affected passengers.  The family will be flown to the site free of charge.  The carrier will make arrangements for onward travel when they're ready and they will be given a temp cc to use for purchases since all of their baggage is still on board.  Parents will be given baby items, people with illness will get new meds and those sorts of things.  Once the plane is released by NTSB, the carrier will start cleaning it out and try to reunite the bags with the people.  They will even give them a cell phone to use until they get theirs back.  Oh yeah, and provide a ton of counseling.  They really are provided for.
