This is Crazy! I love both of them... And I'm afraid now, Chris Brown has completely killed his career! He and Rihanna had a fight and she ended up with two contusions on her forehead, a bloody nose, a split lip, and bite marks on her fingers and arm! How could he do this to her? I mean, hit a guy, beat up a paparazzo, but beat up a girl? That is low. No one will work with him now. Whoever does, will be associated with a girlfriend beater... DUMB! Chris Brown, you were on such a bright road of super stardom... Singing, dancing, good looks... all RUINED! He is an IDIOT!... Rihanna... Not all men are like this, and PLEASE NEVER go back to him... IT WILL NEVER END...

I agree...his career is done!  Rihanna is so loved by the music community, I don't think anyone will ever want to work with him again.  Many radio stations around my area are starting to pull Chris Brown from rotation.  He has already lost Wrigley's sponsorship and his "Got Milk" ad has been pulled from the web site.

It is also upsetting that this is a cycle he could have broken.  In an interview he talked about watching his stepfather beat up his mom during fights.  He wanted to kill his stepfather because of all the pain he caused his mom.  Then for him to do this...its sad.

I hope she doesn't go back to him too.  It has been reported that this might not have been the first time he put his hands on her.

Maybe if she stays away from him and presses charges it will give other women a "role model" of sorts to get away from abusive men.   I understand this is tramatic for her, but being a celebrity, she is being watched by thousands of young girls right now that have abusive boyfriends and need guidance.  She needs to be strong and stand her ground and don't let him get away with this.  Then maybe one by one abused girls/women will gather the strength to get out of their cycles.

One of our home town high schools is always putting up signs and having events to raise awareness of dating/teen violence, which, IMO, is a great thing. Violence is never the answer, but it is all to common.  I'm glad the school is putting out the message that it is NOT ok instead of looking the other way and not dealing with it at all.

I'm sure she has a good support system to help her get thru this.  She's lucky...some women don't.

Chris Brown avoids jail time in plea bargain

Jun 22, 2009, 05:46 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Chris Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault today in Los Angeles in a deal with prosecutors. Brown was sentenced to probation and community service for beating then-girlfriend Rihanna in a February incident. He must also stay 50 yards away from Rihanna unless the two are present at the same event, in which case he must stay 10 yards away from her, and he is forbidden from contacting her in any way. The deal includes 180 days of community service such as trash removal in Virginia (where Brown resides), along with five years of supervised probation and a court-mandated 52-week domestic violence counseling program. (The singer had faced up to four years in prison if convicted.)

Rihanna was not present at the hearing until Brown left the courtroom, at which point she arrived and was given a copy of the judge's stay-away order for Brown. She made no statement. Brown will be formally sentenced on Aug. 5.

Can Chris Brown save career with plea deal in assault on Rihanna?

Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to the serious charge of felony assault against his one-time girlfriend Rihanna. The charges came after an altercation in February left Rihanna battered and bruised. While Brown will not serve any jail time, he has been assigned to six months of community service in his home state of Virginia. He will serve five years on supervised probation with quarterly California court visits and complete a domestic violence counseling program.

Brown has been ordered to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna at all times with the exception of music industry events they are both attending. At such times, her zone of privacy is limited to 10 yards. Rihanna did not seek any such restrictions on Brown.

Brown and Rihanna were the top male and female pop singles artists in America last year and both were nominated for multiple Grammy Awards earlier this year. Indeed, they faced off for the second year in a row in a collaboration category.

But their relationship ended just hours before the Grammys were handed out on Feb. 8. The pair had spent the preceding evening together at the star-studded party thrown annually by recording exec Clive Davis. Then in the wee small hours of Sunday morning, Brown assaulted Rihanna as they drove home.

Brown canceled his appearance on that night's kudocast where he was scheduled to perform "Forever." Today with his admission in court, Chris Brown lost forever his carefully cultivated image as a teen idol. His core fans were young girls who swooned over his boy-next-door good looks and charm.

Soon after the incident Brown was in contention for the third year in a row as favorite male singer at the Kids' Choice Awards. In the face of mounting negative attention, he eventually withdrew from the race. Brown won the award last year after losing to Justin Timberlake in 2007. This year he was nominated against 2006 winner Jesse McCartney, Kid Rock and T-Pain.

However, the Grammy Award – the music industry's highest honor – has eluded Brown. Last year, Rihanna and Jay-Z won the best rap/sung collaboration Grammy for "Umbrella" over, among others,  Brown and T-Pain for "Kiss Kiss." This year, they competed against each other for the pop vocal collaboration Grammy. Brown and Jordin Sparks were nominated for "No Air" while Rihanna and Maroon 5 were up for "If I Never See Your Face Again." Both duos lost to the night's big winners Robert Plant and Allison Kraus for "Rich Woman."

Of the two, Rihanna has competed for far more Grammys. Last year, "Umbrella" contended in two of the top four Grammy categories — song and record of the year. She lost both races to Amy Winehouse's "Rehab." Her dance recording contender "Don't Stop the Music" was bested by Justin Timberlake's "LoveStoned." And her R&B duo with Ne-Yo on "I Hate That I Love You" lost to Chaka Khan and Mary J. Blige ("Disrespectful") and lost a R&B song bid to "No One" by Alicia Keys.

At this year's Grammys, Rihanna lost dance recording again, as "Disturbia" was bested by Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." And her long-form video ("Good Girl Gone Bad Live") was edged out by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ("Runnin' Down a Dream").

Brown remains a Grammy loser despite five nominations. Besides those two collaboration defeats, he also lost R&B male vocal for "Take You Down" to Ne-Yo ("Miss Independent") this year while last year he also lost best contemporary R&B album for his self-titled debut to Ne-Yo ("Because of You") as well as best new artist to Carrie Underwood.

And now that he's tinged by scandal, can he ever win with the Grammys? As Gold Derby often notes, bad boys don't win Oscars. Russell Crowe hasn't been nominated since he attacked that BAFTA producer and Manhattan hotel clerk. (Crowe apologized in the first incident and settled a lawsuit in the second.)

Since the Grammys are music's equivalent to the Oscars, the same issue applies. These academies represent the more conservative wings of their industries and they don't like to give awards to people who reflect poorly upon them. True, in music — especially in the R&B, rap, metal and hard rock genres— a rebellious, anti-establishment spirit is tolerated, sometimes celebrated, but that's because edginess drives mass music sales. That's not true of movies or TV, so that's why the Oscars and Emmys are even more mainstream than the Grammys.

But the Grammys can still be a bit fuddy-duddy. Rap artists who tend to win, for example, are more likely to be of the safe Will Smith or Jay-Z variety (four Grammys each) than the thuggish kind like Snoop Dog or Notorious B.I.G. (none). When gangsta rappers triumph, they tend to be of the establishment kind like Dr. Dre (four). Just a few years ago, music critics widely hailed 50 Cent's "Get Rich or Die Trying" as the best disc of the year, but its music couldn't break into the top Grammy races. 50 Cent's been nominated for Grammys but only in those second-tier slots. He's never won. When he was nominated for best new artist of 2004, he lost to Evanescence.

Rihanna's attorney reacts to Chris Brown's plea deal

Jun 22, 2009, 09:24 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Legal Matters, News

EW spoke on the phone with Donald Etra, attorney for Rihanna, shortly after it was announced that Chris Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in a Los Angeles courtroom today.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Was this a verdict worked out between the D.A. and defense counsel?
DONALD ETRA: The plea agreement was worked out between the District Attorney and defense counsel, yes.

And is it something you are pleased with?
The district attorney advised us of the plea earlier this afternoon, and Rihanna had no objection to the plea.

Was she planning to testify in compliance with the subpoena?
Yes. She was at court and she was ready and willing to testify. As of this morning, our understanding was Rihanna would be called to the stand.

This separation agreement -- that they have to be 50 yards apart, unless they are at an event, in which case it's 10 yards -- can you elaborate on that?
Yes. The judge issued a stay-away order requiring Chris to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna and to have no contact with Rihanna. If they happen to be at the same industry function, then the 50 yards becomes 10 yards. But the no-contact order still is in effect.

And is that permanent or does it have a time limit? Will it be revisited?
The current order lasts for 5 years, although the judge said that after Chris is sentenced in August, she would consider reducing the full stay-away order to a limited protective order. Rihanna requested that there only be a protective order, namely that Chris be ordered not to annoy, molest, or harass her. Rihanna did not feel that a stay-away order was necessary in this case.

Is it your opinion and the opinion of Rihanna that the sentence is punitive enough?
Rihanna feels it’s a fair and just resolution to the case.

And does she have any desire to communicate with him outside of the bounds of the no-contact order?
Rihanna understands the terms of the protective order and of course will comply with those terms.

Is it your feeling that everyone is ready to move on or will there be further civil suits involved?
At this point, this terminates the criminal proceeding, in so far as a preliminary hearing or trial. What remains is sentencing, and then various court appearances for Mr. Brown to show that he’s complying with the terms of the sentence.

Chris Brown's Sentence 'A Pretty Tough Deal,' Legal Expert Says
'Labor service is not gonna be easy,' Peter T. Haven says.

By Jayson Rodriguez
Immediately after Chris Brown's plea deal was announced on Monday, speculation began as to whether the 20-year-old singer was let off the hook too easily for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend, Rihanna.

Brown avoided jail time and instead was sentenced to 180 days of labor service in Virginia, five years of probation and was ordered to attend a domestic abuse program for a year.

In addition to the deal that was reached, Brown was also issued a stay away order by the judge hearing the case. According the guidelines of the stay away, Brown isn't to have any contact with Rihanna during the duration of his probation period. In the event both celebrities appear at a function, Brown is to remain a certain distance away from his one-time girlfriend and Rihanna isn't to contact him either.

Many think Brown received only a slap on the wrist for what he plead guilty to, but legal expert Peter T. Haven thinks Brown may have actually gotten more than he bargained for.

"It sounds good on the surface — no jail time — but in many respects, it's a pretty tough deal," Haven told MTV News. "He has to do 180 days of labor service. In California, for instance, we're used to seeing guys in jumpsuits picking up trash on the freeway or weeding. Labor service is not gonna be easy. You have to get up super early, you have to be there almost before the sun comes up and work until 2 or 3 [p.m.]. Then he has to do 52 weeks of sitting in a class for two hours every week. He almost gave up a year of his life — that's an indication that the prosecution probably had a pretty good case and [Brown] really didn't want to do any jail time."

Brown was offered 180 days of jail time as an alternative to labor service, which Haven described as "hot, tough, hard work."

Haven suggested that jail time might have been an easier option for Brown. The singer will be formally sentenced on August 5 and Haven suspects the 180 days may be reduced to a shorter time span at that hearing. A brief sentence could easily be reduced even further for good behavior if Brown did serve time.

"It's not a walk in the park [either way]," Haven explained. "But, say if he did jail time as a part of his plea, he probably wouldn't have served the full term — he probably would have done less. He would have gotten out earlier and the whole thing would have been done. When you're in jail, it's also hard to violate the terms of your probation. When you voluntarily take it upon yourself to take these things on yourself and have to show up yourself, that leaves a lot of room for error."

Further complicating matters is that Brown's 180 days of service could be spread out over years. Meanwhile a short jail stay could potentially be "easier and cleaner," Haven said.

"Some lawyers have recommended jail to their clients," he said. "Because if you screw up, you're gonna get more than just 180 days."

Chris Brown's sentence for beating up Rihanna delayed by judge

BY Nancy Dillon In Los Angeles and Bill Hutchinson
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Wednesday, August 5th 2009, 8:10 PM

Chris Brown's sentencing for beating up Rihanna was delayed, so that the judge can make sure that the singer will have to do hard labor for his community service.

A Los Angeles judge postponed sentencing singer Chris Brown on Wednesday, saying she wants documents guaranteeing he'll do roadside cleanup or other hard labor for beating up Rihanna.

Judge Patricia Schnegg told the R&B star that she doesn't want him doing easy community service but rather 1,400 hours of "community labor" for smacking around his ex-girlfriend.

"I do not favor community service," said Schnegg, explaining that she wants to see Brown, 20, outdoors picking up trash or cleaning up graffiti.

Brown pleaded guilty June 22 to assaulting Rihanna, 21, after they left a pre-Grammy gala in Los Angeles on Feb. 8.

Instead of jail time, Brown plea bargained for five years' probation, 180 days of community labor and 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling.

Schnegg agreed to allow the "Forever" and "Kiss Kiss" recording artist to do his community labor in Virginia, where he lives.

The judge told Brown she was delaying his sentencing to Aug. 27 because she had yet to receive documents from the State of Virginia specifying the type of community labor he'll be assigned.

Police: Chris Brown will

Chris Brown sits before the judge during his sentencing for assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna, at Los Angeles County Superior Court in Los Angeles, Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009. Brown was sentenced to five years probation and 180 days of community labor.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Police in Virginia say singer Chris Brown will remove graffiti, pick up trash and wash cars as part of his sentence for beating ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

The 20-year-old Brown was sentenced in California last month to five years' probation, six months of community labor and a year of domestic violence counseling for the February attack. He is performing the labor in Richmond near his home.

In a letter to the judge, Richmond Police Chief Bryan Norwood outlined some of Brown's tasks. They include graffiti removal, trash pickup, washing cars, cleaning and maintaining grounds.

Norwood said Brown will be supervised during his service, but Brown would have to pay for any additional security if the public becomes aware of his presence.

Rihanna "Humiliated" by Leaked Photo After Attack

November 3, 2009
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop singer Rihanna was named Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine on Tuesday after an attack at the hands of boyfriend Chris Brown that she said changed her life overnight.

"I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day," the 21 year-old singer said in her first interview since the assault in February.

The R&B singer told the December issue of Glamour magazine that she felt humiliated when a photo of her bruised and bloodied face was leaked to the media, but that she wanted to use the incident to alert young women to the "big secret" of abusive relationships.

"It was humiliating: that is not a photo you would show to anybody," she said. "I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it's my life.

Chris Brown back on probation, sentenced to 1,000 hours of labor
August 17, 2013

Chris Brown is nowhere near done with his probation now.

The Grammy-winning R&B singer has been ordered to complete an additional 1,000 hours of community labor as a result of prosecutors' accusations that he did not properly report his previous community service hours.

Brown's five-year felony probation was revoked in July after misdemeanor hit-and-run allegations brought the singer back to court. That case was dismissed earlier this week, but Judge James Brandlin reinstated Brown's probation when the singer appeared for the hearing Friday and said that he must complete the 1,000 additional hours -- that's 125 days -- by Aug. 25, 2014, according to L.A. Now.

The 24-year-old "Don't Wake Me Up" singer was originally sentenced in 2009 to 1,440 hours of community labor -- 180 days -- to be done in his native Virginia following his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna at a pre-Grammy party. Though his lawyers said he had completed his hours in Virginia, on Feb. 5, L.A. County Deputy Dist. Atty. Mary A. Murray accused him of submitting false records in a motion that outlined a series of inconsistencies in a report submitted by Richmond, Va., police that listed the hours Brown served.

Though Brown's attorney Mark Geragos disputed the claims, one instance in the report said Brown completed four hours of trash pickup when he was actually en route to Cancun, Mexico, and another said that he was picking up trash in Richmond when he was photographed at a charity event in Washington, D.C.

The judge made no finding that Brown violated his probation, L.A. Now reported, but instead reinstated the probation with the additional hours.

The singer can work for Caltrans picking up trash on the streets and highways, clean up beaches, do probation alternative work services or clean up graffiti, TMZ reported. The latter option is ironic because Brown's neighbors have complained about a graffiti-style monster mural on the outside of the singer's Hollywood Hills home. The mural was painted over in July.

In the probation sentencing aftermath, Brown shared a few salty tweets showing exactly how he felt about the case (be warned, the following links contain profanity).

Chris Brown cancels shows following troubles
August 19, 2013

The promoter of four Chris Brown concerts in Canada scheduled this summer says the events have been canceled.

Stephen Tobin, owner of Drop Entertainment Group, said Monday that the decision was made after consulting with Brown and in light of his recent personal and health-related issues.

Brown has been dealing with legal problems since 2009, when he was arrested for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna and was first placed on probation.

NEWS/ Newly Blond Chris Brown Has Probation Revoked: Here's What That Means for the Rehabbing Singer
December 16, 2013

A judge revoked the R&B star's probation today in light of his October arrest for alleged assault in Washington, D.C.—but instead of being taken into custody, Brown was ordered to just keep doing what he's been doing.
Meaning, the 24-year-old F.A.M.E. artist will remain in the treatment facility where he's been living and continue to complete the 24 hours of community service per week that's required of him, take his prescription meds and abstain from marijuana (including the medical kind).
"Pleased he is doing well in the program and for that reason the court is not included to take the defendant into custody," said L.A. Superior Court Judge James Brandlin.
Brown is not allowed to leave California except to travel to a hearing in the D.C. assault case on Jan. 8, where he's required to appear in person, according to attorney Mark Geragos.
The Grammy winner, who was sentenced to five years of probation in August 2009 after pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna earlier that year, is about one-third of the way through a court-ordered three-month stay in rehab.
He had voluntarily checked into a facility right after his D.C. arrest, but the judge determined on Nov. 20, in light of his increasingly frequent run-ins with the law over the past year, that outpatient treatment wasn't cutting it.

Another hearing was set for Feb. 10, with Brandlin instructing the probation department to prepare a supplemental report on Brown's progress by then for his review.
The report released by the court today and obtained by E! News states that Brown has "made improvements and positive behavior change in the program since his arrival. He is participating in multiple daily group and individual therapy sessions, including anger management."
He has also "been taken off medical marijuana and is taking psychotropic medication as prescribed." His random drug tests (for amphetamines, cocaine, MDMA, PCP, opiates, marijuana and benzodiazepeneshave) have come up negative.
Brown "appears to have a more serious and responsible demeanor and is responding well to dual diagnosis treatment program changes and medication," the report concludes.
The probation officer who interviewed Brown also noted his suggestion that the court might consider transferring him to sober living facility after his 90 days in rehab are up. Brown, however, reportedly dismissed that idea, saying that his issues are with anger management and not with addiction, and further time in a residential facility would also cause him to financially suffer as a performing artist.

Judge says Chris Brown should remain in treatment
February 3, 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge says Chris Brown should remain in a rehabilitation facility and turned down a prosecutor's motion to have the R&B singer jailed over an arrest in Washington, D.C. last year.

A prosecutor asked Monday to have Brown taken into custody over a misdemeanor assault case filed against Brown in D.C.
Brown remains on probation in Los Angeles over his 2009 attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna. Brandlin revoked the singer's probation in December but made no changes to his sentence during a brief hearing on Monday.
The singer's lawyer Mark Geragos asked Brandlin to allow Brown to remain in treatment and give time for the Washington case to be resolved.

Authorities: Chris Brown Arrested on Warrant
March 15, 2013

Chris Brown was arrested Friday and will be held without bail on a warrant issued by probation officials in the latest legal entanglement for the R&B singer who has struggled to put his 2009 attack on Rihanna behind him.

The warrant was issued by the judge overseeing Brown's case after he was informed Friday morning that the singer had been discharged from rehab "for failure to comply with rules and regulations of the program." No further details were released, but more information will be presented to Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin when Brown appears in his courtroom on Monday afternoon.

Sheriff's officials said Brown was cooperative when he was arrested at a Malibu treatment facility where he had been staying and transported to a jail facility in downtown Los Angeles.

Brown had been ordered to remain in rehab for anger management treatment. A January letter from the facility stated that the singer was also being treated for bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and past substance abuse.

An email sent to Brown's attorney Mark Geragos was not immediately returned. A probation spokeswoman declined to comment on what prompted Brown's arrest.

Brown's probation for the Rihanna assault had been scheduled to end this year, but a judge revoked it last year after Brown was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge in Washington, D.C. That case is pending.

Brandlin rejected a Los Angeles prosecutor's request to send Brown to jail because of the Washington case, citing his progress in rehab. He has ordered Brown to stop smoking marijuana and take only prescribed medications; the singer has not failed any drug screenings since the order was made.

In addition to getting treatment, the singer remained under strict orders to complete 1,000 hours of community labor this year. A probation report dated Feb. 26 stated that Brown had completed 250 hours and that he was being cooperative with probation officials.

Brown's attempts at treatment have not been without difficulties.

A rehab center where Brown was voluntarily staying reported to Brandlin that the singer threw a rock through his mother's window during a joint counseling session in November. The judge then ordered Brown to remain in treatment for another three months and renewed that order at a hearing on Feb. 28.

A probation officer interviewed Brown for the February report, saying the singer was grateful to be in rehab and "looks forward to staying out of trouble."
