Could it be a backpack?

Yup.  The strap from a backpack  could be also.

Who are the missing persons in that area of california in the age range to have a book bag or back pack? Maybe in the last year? I will check it out

Amber is. But who would the other person be? Too much of a coincidence that the two bodies were found close together like that. I wonder if there are any missing people in pairs. Another thing I wondered was if it was a video camera case? Too big probably. Maybe a suitcase? Perhaps a pair of hitchhikers who got picked up by a sicko. I will go do some searching.

In this article, it was stated that the Landers skull appears to be from a child 8-14 years old. http://www.kesq.com/Global/story.asp?S=11659410

How many 8 - 14 year olds missing in that area?  and why does police not have the time to determine how long the skull was there?  If there was a bag smell it would not have been completely skeletonized yet.

Hi Northern Rose
When was this skull found? At least 2 weeks ago right? Why have they not had time? A skull of a 8-14 year old should be a priority!

Thanks for the up close shots. If you look at the first one the strap think must be on the top and as she is tipping it forward into the bag and falls. To me and I reserve the right to change my mind, that last one looks like a rectangle you would place an identification tag in.

I see what you are saying

The Landers skull did not have the clothe with it but is the one they are saying could be a 8-14 year old.

The clothe was found with the two skulls in Angels Forest.  They have not said approx ages or genders for either of those skulls.

And of course Amber was last seen on her way to school with her backpack. Do we have a pic of the type of back pack she had? What color and style it was?

Reconstructing human remains found in L.A. forest will be jigsaw puzzle

One of the skulls was marked by a large circular hole in the forehead, which authorities suspect was a bullet wound. The other, found roughly 25 to 50 yards away in a remote section of the Angeles National Forest, showed severe trauma.

On Monday, a forensic anthropologist and other investigators examined the skulls and other human bones found in the area last week. The bones are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that authorities hope will lead them to the identity of the victims and eventually to who or what killed them.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Monday the deaths appear suspicious but that officials won’t know for sure until more tests are done.

“It appears that both of them are homicides, but we’re not going to say right now,” said Ed Winter of the coroner’s office. Winter said a forensic anthropologist was poring over the bones, trying to match up  which pieces belonged to which skull.

Then comes the task of identifying the race, age and sex of each set of remains. Investigators hope to have that portion completed by the end of the week. Authorities will then comb through missing-persons databases and look through local and federal law enforcement records to check for possible matches. Investigators then will use various means, such as dental records, to try to positively identify the remains.

Homicide detectives aren’t likely to jump on the case until the coroner can provide a cause death, as well as identifications. Right now, there are few clues.

One of the skulls shows signs it could have been burned during last summer's Station fire, suggesting that the remains might have been there before the fire started. The second skull was found buried under a couple of inches of dirt, Winter said.

Law enforcement authorities and coroner’s investigators are unsure how long the remains had been there.

From the last article it suggests that one skull was there before August and the other was not.  Would a few inches of dirt save it from the fire?

Amber was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. Her jewelry consisted of a blue sapphire ring worn on her middle left finger. She was also wearing a silver claddagh ring, which is a traditional Irish ring given in friendship or worn as a wedding ring. It is described as two hands clasping a heart, and the heart is surmounted by a crown. Amber was carrying a black shoulder bag, which is similar in appearance to a computer laptop carrying case.

It does appear to say that. I don't think a couple of inches of dirt would save it from a raging forest fire. This is creepy, like a dumping site for a killer.

I apologize the list, that list is from using a filter of missing persons within the last year up until July since the fire was in August. Obviously it could be from longer or now after August.

I agree if one skull is burned and the other is not, this could be someones special place to hide bodies.

I don't know if this will help to give an idea of designs.

I wonder what type of material it was made out of. Was it a stiff nylon or a fabric. Sebastian can you find out?

On the Lander skull, there used to be an article in the San Bernardino County Sun but it has been archived.  Here is as much as I can see from it.

Dog unearths human skull in Landers

A human skull was found in a Landers backyard Wednesday after a resident's dog dragged the bones into a backyard in the 59000 block of Mitch Lane, sheriff's detectives said.

How strange this is. I looked at this area on google maps, why would someone drive all of the way out there to dump the body close enough to someones home that a dog could unearth it? Why would they not take it out to the middle of the desert? Why so close to homes? That to me is strange.

Here is the location I have been using to map the Forest skulls.

http://www.myfoxla.com/dpp/news/local/second-skull-found-in-angeles-national-forest-20091226

If you click on satellite and then large map under the map you can see all the roads etc and zoom in and move around.

I am off to bed.  Good night and God bless.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/misheloff_ilene.html

This girls case was 20 years ago but is similar to Ambers in that she was last seen walking home from school. The age range is close as well. Timothy Bindner was a suspect in her case and she has never been found. I read the book "Stalemate" about Bindner. I still cannot believe that he was never connected legally to any of these cases. I remember reading somewhere that he went to school in San Bernardino. He lives in Northern California now but may still have relatives in San Bernardino.
