More remains found in Arizona. Is it me, or are there a lot more than usual popping up?

At the coroner’s laboratory in San Bernardino, Friday a doctor and forensic anthropologist examined the skull to glean as much information they could.

“The doctor looked to see if there are any signs of any trauma that give him any clues,” coroner’s spokesperson Sandy Fatland said. “The forensic anthropologist will try to determine gender, age and other qualities.”

Next week, the deputy coroner, anthropologist and medical examiner will decide whether to send a sample or the entire skull, which Fatland said looked fairly intact, to the Department of Justice.

The coroner’s office might want to keep the skull in San Bernardino in case further remains are found, so experts could make sure they all come from the same body.

The Department of Justice will take DNA samples from the skull to see if it matches anyone in law enforcement’s DNA records.

Detectives To Search Area Where Skulls Were Found
Two skulls found in Angeles Nat'l Forest gully.
Updated: Tuesday, 29 Dec 2009, 10:37 AM PST

Lucas Creek - Homicide detectives plan to return this week to a site where two human skulls, one with an apparent bullet hole, were found below the Angeles Forest (N3) Highway in a gully scorched by the Station Fire, authorities said today.

"They'll be looking for the rest of the remains," Detective Eddie Brown of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Homicide Bureau said this morning. "They're at the beginning of this, not the end."

The first skull was discovered Thursday near mile marker 19.36 of the Angeles Forest Highway, above the Big Tujunga Dam, said Lt. Paul Becker of the Homicide Bureau. Deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station who went to the site saw the skull had a bullet hole, he said.

On Saturday, about a dozen forensic scientists, coroner's investigators and homicide detectives returned to the gully to dig and sift through dirt, rocks and debris in the gully. They used soft-bristle, wood-handled brushes to excavate, and metal, wood-framed screens to sift through material, as well as one dog trained at sniffing out human remains.

The second skull was discovered about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, close to where the first was found, Becker said.

"We don't know if this is a murder, a suicide or accidental," Becker said Saturday at the scene. "Obviously that is the focus of this investigation."

Both sets of remains remained unidentified today, said Los Angeles County Coroner's Investigator Larry Dietz.

The gully where the skulls were found feeds into the Lucas Creek drainage, which in turn feeds Big Tujunga Canyon above the dam. The location where the remains were found is about 100 feet below the Angeles Forest Highway.

The steep-sloped drainage was nearly denuded by the Station Fire, which burned 250 square miles of the Angeles National Forest in August and September.

Though the remains were found in the burned-out area, at least one of the skulls appeared to pre-date the fire, said Coroner's Investigator Jerry McKibben.

"Apparently it's part of the burn area, but it sounds like the bones are pre-fire," McKibben said. "Just from the condition of the skull, it sounds like it was skeletonized before the fire."

Homicide investigators and forensic scientists may return to the dig area today or Wednesday, Deputy Ed Hernandez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said this morning.

"This is a homicide investigation," Hernandez said. "It's ongoing."

Mystery Surrounds Skulls Found in Forest
Two skulls found in Angeles Nat'l Forest gully

Lucas Creek - Homicide detectives said today they'll rely on laboratory forensics in investigating the discovery of two human skulls, one with an apparent bullet hole, below the Angeles Forest Highway in a wildfire- scorched gully.

While a detective earlier said investigators would return to the site to look for the rest of the remains, Deputy Rick Pedroza of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Homicide Bureau said today they did not plan to go back.

But much forensic work remains to be done.

"They're at the beginning of this, not the end," sheriff's Detective Eddie Brown said.

The first skull was discovered Thursday near mile marker 19.36 of the Angeles Forest Highway, above the Big Tujunga Dam. Deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station went to the site and found the skull with the apparent bullet hole, said Lt. Paul Becker of the Homicide Bureau.

On Saturday, about a dozen forensic scientists, coroner's investigators and homicide detectives returned to dig and sift through dirt, rocks and debris in the gully.

Using soft-bristle, wood-handled brushes to excavate, and metal, wood- framed screens to sift through material, as well as one dog trained at sniffing out human remains, they found the second skull about 10:30 a.m., close to where the first was located, Becker said.

"We don't know if this is a murder, a suicide or accidental," Becker said that day.

The remains were found about 100 feet below the Angeles Forest Highway.

The steep-sloped drainage was nearly denuded by the massive Station Fire, which burned 250 square miles of the Angeles National Forest in August and September.

I still don't understand how and where this dog found the skull. Was he let to roam the area freely? Seems there is a fence around the house or he at least is in a pen. Also, if you look at that area there are houses on plots of land all around there. Why would someone dump a body there where it will have a better chance of being found? Why not take it a few miles deeper into the desert where there are no houses? There are 16 RSO in Landers, that is a lot for a small town.

Here is information on Landers

This article says it was a stray dog

The reporting party’s aunt said a stray dog came onto her property with something in its mouth that appeared to be a human skull, possibly belonging to a baby or child. The skull was located behind a vehicle on the reporting party’s property, a sheriff’s department media summary stated.

LANDERS - The San Bernardino County Coroner is working to identify human remains found in the hi-desert.

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's Homicide Unit, along with search teams and cadaver dogs, spent hours Thursday looking for more human remains in Landers.

An investigation is now underway after a human skull was discovered Wednesday on a nearby property.

Geraldo Cabrera says his dog "Scoobie" found the skull over two weeks ago while out playing. But it took awhile before anyone realized it.

Geraldo's wife, Ariceli, says her kids told her something in the yard smelled very bad. But she didn't do anything, because she'd had surgery and couldn't walk or leave the house.

Meanwhile, Geraldo, a truck driver, was out on the road.

When Ariceli was finally able to go outside, she didn't know what the skull was when she first saw it.

"I called my cousin and her husband. They came over and he said 'that's a person' and then we called police."

The family says investigators told them the remains appear to be from a child eight to 14 years old.

Some neighbors say they're not surprised by the find.

"I think people kill somebody, then drag them out here to the desert. Nobody pays attention to them," said Marlin Shaffer, a Landers resident.

Investigators say they have not had time to determine how fresh the remains are or if foul play was involved.
