Aruba Stevedoring Company
History
Since days, long gone, local Agencies representing the Shipping Lines that brought cargo to Aruba performed their own stevedoring work of unloading and loading the ships and delivering- and receiving their cargoes, for which purpose they employed their own supervisory staff whilst labor was being contracted on an hourly wage basis from a labor pool. When by the end of the 1970s containerization came on the scene, an overall revision of all port activities was required.


A contractual basis with the local Government was agreed upon and this is how Aruba Stevedoring Company (ASTEC) N.V. was created and continues to operate as from the start of its existence, which was on September 15th, 1983.

 

 

Handling the needs of bustling port
During the year 2005 ASTEC handled over 57,000 TEUS (20-feet equivalent container units), 5,200 passenger cars and over 44,000 tons of loose cargo, mostly consisting of cement on pallets and in big-bags, bundled lumber, and steel structures of various shapes. Containers and cars are being discharges or loaded stored and delivered at Oranjestad, where as in order not to disturb cruise-tourism, most of the loose cargo is being handled at Barcadera.


The work of ASTEC is a 24-hour/seven days a week operation. The majority of imported goods come either from the United States or from Northern Europe, from where shipping lines such as King Ocean, Maersk, EWL, CMA-CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Sea Freight, Hamburg- Sud, CSAV and CFS/ZIM offer regular container services to Aruba. Cars from the Far East and South America arrive on typically shaped car-carriers of NYK and K-line.


Containers are sorted by size and type, whereas electric connections are available for reefers, freeze-and deepfreeze containers carrying perishable cargoes.

 

 

Equipment
The company owns a fleet of Reach Stakers (Container lifting equipment), dedicated Terminal Tractors and heavy duty Terminal Chassis, roll trailers, forklift trucks with lifting capacities of between 2.5-and 16 tons, electric (warehouse) forklift trucks and specialized handling- and lifting gear to provide safe and damage-free movement of cargo. All equipment is being serviced and repaired at the company's own workshop. State of the art software guarantees a smooth delivery and dispatch of cargoes.


In cooperation with the Aruba Port Authority N.V., the Aruban Customs Service, and local Shipping Agencies, ASTEC expects to continue to be able to provide the Aruban business community with uninterrupted handling-and delivery of their cargoes as it has been doing since commencing its operations 23 years ago.

Alternative Positioning Solutions, (APS), recently complet-
ed filming a segment for the TV series “Deepsea Detective”
which is an investigative series regularly airing on the History
Channel. The segment was focused on determining the effects
of Hurricane Ivan on the Civil War Ironclad Gunship, “USS
Tecumseh”.
The USS Tecumseh went down with over 90 souls on board
after striking a mine while attacking Fort Morgan at the
entrance to Mobile Bay, Alabama.
APS, a navigation, positioning and sonar services company
based in Lafayette, La. was contacted by representatives from
Lone Wolf Productions to assist in this segment. They were
specifically interested in the SonaVision Variable Frequency
Bottom Scanning Sonar utilized by APS. This sonar system
allows APS to adjust the frequency to “see” up to 200 meters
out from the tripod mounted transceiver head.
According to APS Company Spokesman and Operations in
assisting divers where visibility is limited. Visibility at the site
was less than 3 feet.
APS also provided a magnetometer system along with the
Bottom Scanning Sonar for this project. The time has not yet
been announced for the airing of this segment.

It is difficult going home with many questions left unanswered and so many sonar targets remaining to be explored. Our comfort lies in knowledge that we have done the best job we could, that we can return to dive on the remaining targets when funded, and that answers may come in time. We feel that the search is not over but rather entering a new phase.

Kyle Kingman: The logs are in a safe somewhere. John and Ryan Poff (one of John's project managers) knows where it is. I can't get copies of the logs at this time. Perhaps in a few months. The target locations are in the safe, although I also have them in a safe spot.  I don't care about the other targets though. I don't think any of it is of any potential interest. Mainly junk, coral, and debris.
