WASHINGTON — President Obama weighed in Wednesday on the escalating drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that he was looking at possibly deploying National Guard troops to contain the violence but ruled out any immediate military move.

"We're going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense," Obama said during an interview with journalists for regional papers, including a McClatchy reporter.

"I don't have a particular tipping point in mind," he said. "I think it's unacceptable if you've got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens."

Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., chair of a key subcommittee on border security, will hold a hearing Thursday on Mexican border violence.

"Last week Mexico sent an additional 3,200 soldiers to the border," Sanchez said in a prepared opening statement for the hearing, "increasing the total number of Mexican soldiers combating drug cartels to more than 45,000."

Sanchez chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security's subcommittee on border, maritime and global counterterrorism.

"It should be noted that over 200 U.S. citizens have been killed in this drug war, either because they were involved in the cartels or were innocent bystanders," she said. "With those concerns in mind, it is essential that the Department of Homeland Security, along with other relevant departments, continue to pursue a contingency plan to address 'spillover' violence along our border."

Are you all alarmed by the drug war with all its killings and beheadings at our national doorstep? Is President Obama right to be concerned about the safety and security of American citizens in these border areas and all American citizens for we are all affected by the existence of a drug culture here in our own country?

President Obama, like many Americans, might find the notion of militarized American borders to be distasteful and not exactly in keeping with our national self-image, but when push comes to shove, are you glad we have a President who is not afraid to step up to the plate and protect our borders?

What exactly does that mean?  How many dead Americans will it take to trigger an Obama response?  1,001?

Somehow, I don't see protecting the borders as some kind of negative military exercise.  "militarized" doesn't fit in this case.  "Protect and serve" - isn't that part of the some oath?

Is it marshall law or protect your own family for the thousands that live along the border states?  Buy lots of guns and amo to protect your own?

Obama and some others seem to have an interest in gun control.  How are American's going to protect themselves without guns?  Maybe prayer?  Human shields?

The Obama administration doesn't seem to be there for those along the border and in the cities, in both countries.  It seems like there should be some joint effort to keep drugs and criminals from controlling the border areas.

Whatever troups Mexico sent to the border don't count as real combatents of the drug war. Everything in Mexico is corrupt. Something had better be done soon as the drugs gangs are shooting here in Los Angeles.
