SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico: After an American tourist from Chicago died of a heart attack at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport this weekend, New Progressive Party (NPP) Public Safety and Judicial Issues Senate Committee President Héctor Martínez said that he will make sure he finds out why it took paramedics over 20 minutes to arrive at the airport.

Barbara Small, 71, had arrived at the airport to join a Caribbean cruise ship with her family a few minutes before she suffered from a heart attack.

Her son, Mike Small, said that his mother died without receiving any kind of medical treatment and nobody at the airport was able to find a defibrillator to try and revive her. Once the paramedics arrived at the scene, the defibrillator they had barely had any battery left to revive her.

The NPP senator said that he spoke with Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz and the issue is expected to be discussed during the Senate’s majority caucus.

“Today we will hold a caucus and I spoke with the President so we can give some kind of official statement and to begin an investigation. We want to know why it took paramedics over 20 minutes to arrive at the airport,” Martínez said.

Small’s son, said that his mother’s body laid on the airport’s floor for over six hours, because it took the prosecutor in charge of the case that amount of time to arrive at the scene and order the body to be taken to the Forensic Sciences Institute. Tourists, airport staff, Small’s family and paramedics saw the deceased woman’s body on the ground for over six hours as well.
