Update on Amber Alert issued Possible Abduction - Grand Rapids MI

Police continue search for green GMC van, young black girl for Amber Alert

Katy Batdorff | The Grand Rapids PressLt. Ralph Mason spoke to the media about an Amber Alert issued for possible missing girl Friday afternoon. The abduction was witnessed at the corner of Kalamazoo Avenue SE and Gibson Street. A little girl between the ages of 6 and 8 was said to have been taken away in a green van.

GRAND RAPIDS -- As the mother of two children, ages 14 and 9, Alleea Braden winces at the thought of one of them getting abducted off the street.

So she was troubled when she heard police had issued an Amber Alert for a possible child abduction just a few blocks from her Southeast Side home on Friday.

"I think it's terrible, and I'm praying about it," she said.

But so far, police cannot say for sure whether anyone was abducted. Grand Rapids officers searched all day Friday for a metallic green full-size GMC van, which a witness said was involved in the possible abduction of a black female about 6 to 8 years old.

As of Friday night, however, no one had reported a missing child matching that description.

Police issued the Amber Alert because the witness seemed credible, police Lt. Ralph Mason said, and they didn't want to take any chances. He conceded the scene -- a passenger grabbing the girl off the street -- could have been an angry parent collecting a wayward child, but said the witness did not think so.

The witness was driving a car south on Kalamazoo Avenue SE about 9:45 a.m., behind the van, when it suddenly pulled onto Gibson Street.

A passenger in the van got out and grabbed a girl who was walking on the sidewalk, forcibly putting her in the van as she screamed "no, no," the witness told police. The van pulled back onto Kalamazoo Avenue and sped away north, with the witness chasing the van.

Mason said the witness, whom he did not identify, lost the fast-moving van several blocks away in an alley between Watkins and Prince streets near Martin Luther King Park. He believed the van driver was trying to evade him.

"The witness actually followed the vehicle for some time, but was not able to keep up with it," he said.

Minutes later, the witness stopped a police officer at Division Avenue and Hall Street to report the incident.

The witness reported the girl had a pony tail and was wearing a black jacket with the words "Phat Farm" on the back. The van, possibly 1980s vintage, had tinted back windows with a spare tire on the back. The driver's side and passenger side windows were not tinted.

Both men in the vehicle were black. The witness said the passenger was heavy-set, wearing black clothing and a black hat, and had a bushy beard.

Mason said officers plan to perform foot patrols in the Kalamazoo SE neighborhood and keep looking for the van.

"We want the public to keep their eyes and ears open," he said.

Anyone with information about the incident can call Grand Rapids Police at 456-3604 or 911 if they observe the vehicle. Mason said if a parent was involved, they should step forward to let police know what happened so they can stop searching.

Police do not need a named victim to issue an Amber Alert, Mason said, after law enforcement loosened the rules on the system some time ago.

After 24 hours, Grand Rapids Police cancel the Amber Alert of a young girl.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Friday we reported an Amber Alert for a missing Grand Rapids girl, after a witness reported seeing the child being forced into a van.

The Grand Rapids Police department is now cancelling that Amber Alert.

Police say they still do not have a victim and have not received a missing child's report in over 24 hours.

So at this point, that Amber Alert has been cancelled.

I wonder if this recent Amber Alert could be similar to this one back in Feb. that was a hoax
