Why Do Families Support Those Accused of Terrible Crimes
By Carol Forsloff
Published 28 min

Cindy and George Anthony have continued to back their daughter, Casey, accused of killing Caylee, the tot in Florida whose body was found in December. Casey's grandmother had lots to say on tapes but will likely stand with the family. Why?
Casey faces a murder trial later this year. It's likely, however, that family divisions won't be the focus of the trial and that most members will support Casey in spite of their questions. Examples of other families have shown how folks pull together as an individual member becomes isolated by the public. That public seems to understand how victims' families pull together, but it is difficult for folk to understand family dynamics of the accused.

Stealing doesn't mean murder, but the grandmother, Shirley Plesea, was concerned about Casey's behavior during the time Caylee was reported missing. Plesea said Casey stole as much as $45,000 from her parents and nearly caused them to lose their home. The grandmother related this to Orange County sheriff's investigators in evidence tapes recently released. The Sentinel quoted from the tapes :

"I don't think she blowed [sic] it all at once, but what was she doing all this time?" Shirley Plesea says in a transcript of the conversation. "She didn't have an income. She was out all the time. She always had money ...

Plesea also said that Casey had paid for Caylee's second birthday party with a check stolen from her grandmother. Statements from Plesea on the tapes declared:

"She was buying the birthday stuff and evidently she needed the extra money," Plesea said. "And instead of asking grandma for some more money ... [She] took the check. I would have gladly given her some money."

These facts reveal what investigators and counselors discover. Family members may raise questions about the accused in crimes, but when it comes time for the trial they become united as a group. The public wonders why as they listen to protestations from individuals in families that an accused, or even convicted killer, has good traits and that killing someone isn't a behavior that could be associated with anyone within the family complex. Perhaps that's because the very act exposes problems or because the assault to the family core is such that it pulls together for support..

It is also likely that attorneys involved in high profile cases encourage family members to stick together. Mental health experts related to the case may make the same suggestions. That's because it gives the family resiliency.

The family with stress as acute as that of Casey Anthony's family requires support from its members because the public rejects someone who would kill their own small child, as Casey is accused of doing. The public face won't disclose the personal trials. Casey Anthony hasn't been found guilty of anything, but her family will find it hard to ever admit she did something purposely wrong, like killing her own child. In the United States, and in other parts of the world, like Great Britain, the pattern is the same. Mothers protecting killers and the public wondering why.

Jeffrey Dahmer, who killed and ate the body parts of his victims, saw his father visit him in prison, embrace him and ask questions about his failures as a father in a book he wrote later. Susan Smith, who was found guilty of killing her two boys, was supported by her mother and other members of her family and continues to receive regular visits. The town where the murderers were committed first cried out for revenge and wanted the death penalty for Susan, but as additional facts of her tragic life were revealed both the public and others softened on her case. The family stayed together despite the stresses, giving a semblance of humanity to an already terrible tragedy. Because serious crimes like this, so out of the norm, impact the core of the family, there is a turn inward, experts say, in order for protection for all.

Linda Russell, Susan Smith's mother maintains she is grateful for how the townspeople had a change of heart that allowed them to put aside hatred of her daughter and have some sympathy towards the family. She recognizes that it forces them to confront central issues that are brought up by the murder of children like Michael and Alex, Susan Smith's children. Russel says, "Some people don't want to think Susan is a good person who loved her children. So they have to make her a mean, terrible somebody. If not, they think, 'Whatever happened to her could happen to me.' And that scares them."

Still the media plays out its reader's rages from facts revealed about Casey Anthony, the family visits and maintains support in public statements. In time, as facts come out, perhaps hearts will be softened as well, as happened in the case of Susan Smith. The future and the relevant details as they become known may allow people the perspective that the jury will need in having to sort out the facts and render a just verdict.
