April Tinsley Case Heating Up  (additional info in this article, despite being a week old)
By Eric Clabaugh

FORT WAYNE, Ind (Indiana's NewsCenter)-Dozens of tips and tonight, police may be one step closer to finding April Tinsley's killer. Millions watched as "America's Most Wanted" profiled the Fort Wayne cold case this weekend and police have already received new leads in the case.

Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries can't reveal much but did say the list of suspects has increased. Fries says he's is optimistic about the information the FBI received and feels it will ultimately lead to the killer.

The horrifying details of April Tinsley's murder, from her life being taken, to notes left behind by the killer, were broadcast to millions of homes Saturday evening. But included in that broadcast, some never before released details. Condoms left by the killer along with notes. They contained DNA that matched what was found at the scene where April's body was discovered. Other newly released information included pictures of the killer, from the waste down and a paisley bed sheet.
Sheriff Fries says "From the information they gained that night from the broadcast, we are very optimistic that by the time this part of the investigation is done we will have an idea of who the perpetrator is." He says America's Most Wanted "Took over forty calls that night and increased the list of suspects by about 16 people, so quite a bit of work for us to do."

So what's the next step for investigators? They will continue working the new leads and in late May or early June a special team will deploy to Fort Wayne to continue working on the case and hopefully bring the person responsible to justice.

Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

May 5, 2009 Tuesday

Tinsley-case investigators raise efforts

More than 40 investigators from multiple agencies fanned out into the community Monday, the latest step in a two-month press into the 1988 abduction and killing of 8-year-old April Tinsley.

The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, in Quantico, Va., is working with the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police.

Other FBI units working on the case include the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program, Crisis Management Unit and the Crimes Against Children Unit.

Representatives from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are also on hand, officials said.

In early April, a re-enactment of the girl's abduction from the 2300 block of Hoagland Avenue was broadcast on the Fox TV show "America's Most Wanted," garnering many tips to the show's call center.

On April 1, 1988, Tinsley was abducted as she walked from a friend's house. Three days later, a jogger found her body in a ditch in southern DeKalb County. The girl had been sexually assaulted and suffocated.

There have been many developments in the case over the years - with four handwritten notes found 16 years later. DNA collected from the notes matched DNA found on Tinsley's body, presumed to be from her killer, Fort Wayne police have said.

On Monday, pairs of investigators left the command center at the Public Safety Academy of Northeast Indiana, on Fort Wayne's far south side.

The teams are working two shifts a day, officials said.

The News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Indiana)
May 5, 2009 Tuesday

'Dial-A-Profile' phone line set up for killer in Tinsley case: Callers will receive an up-to-date description of the individual.

May 5--In an effort to educate the public on the believed description of 8-year-old April Marie Tinsley's killer, the FBI and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children have established a 24-hour "Dial-A-Profile" local phone line.

The line was opened Monday and is operational.

Residents can call the number to receive an up-to-date description of the individual, as composed by federal investigators and profilers, through leads received thus far.

"This 'Dial-A-Profile' line will have what law enforcement experts believe to be the profile of the individual responsible for the April Marie Tinsley death," said Officer Michael Joyner, police spokesman.

The hope, Joyner said, is to make the public constantly aware and informed of the investigators' findings, and to ultimately solve the 21-year-old case.

Tinsley was abducted April 1, 1988, as she walked to a friend's home through her south-central Fort Wayne neighborhood. Three days later, the Fairfield Elementary first-grader's clothed body was found by a jogger at the bottom of a ditch along a rural DeKalb County road. She'd been sexually molested, suffocated and dead for at least two days.

There are no suspects in the murder. At least five separate written messages and notes generated years apart, however, each threatening a repeat of the killing, have taunted police and served to keep the case fresh.

After the prime-time crime show "America's Most Wanted" teamed with the FBI to air a feature on the Tinsley case April 11, tips have poured in with anonymous information.

Those leads have led to the "Profile" line, Joyner said.

The "Dial-A-Profile" line is not a tip line and will offer no opportunity to leave information.

That can be done through Crime Stoppers, Joyner said.
