Crews battle swamp fire in Putnam County


No structures threatened by 400-acre blaze near Georgetown

Crews from four agencies spent the day battling a 400-acre swamp fire near Georgetown in southern Putnam County.

The fire was about 75 percent contained about 6:30 p.m. and wasn't threatening any structures, said Florida Division of Forestry Duty Officer Sheila Ackerman. Earlier in the day, crews from the Forestry Division, Putnam and Flagler counties and the St. Johns River Water Management District used several aircraft to battle the blaze, Ackerman said.

Putnam County Emergency Management Director Jason Southworth said the first crews responded about 11:30 a.m. and were able to keep the fire from getting out of control.

"It was a very fast-moving fire," Southworth said.

Ackerman said the cause of the fire is under investigation but it was possibly started by a motorcycle.

The American Red Cross has a shelter on standby if needed at Whispering Pines, said spokeswoman Christian Smith.

Southworth said crews planned to battle the blaze throughout the night and hope to have it completely contained by morning.

Now there is a fire, they certainly have their share of problems in that area. One really has to feel bad for the decent folks that live there that are law abiding citizens.

Yep.  It's a great pic:  the first time, second time, third time, fourth time and now the fifth time in this thread.  I've asked for it to stop being posted.  The first time was okay, even though OT.  The next four times is too much.  I will be moving the all of them after the first one.  If it gets posted again, I will lock this thread.
