Pair charged with abducting and killing Tori Stafford

A man and a woman from Woodstock, Ont., have been charged in the abduction and killing of eight-year-old Tori Stafford.

Michael Thomas C.S. Rafferty, 28, and Terri-Lynne McClintic, 18, were taken into custody on Tuesday night. They made brief appearances as charges were filed Wednesday morning at a court in the southern Ontario community.

Rafferty was charged with abduction and murder. McClintic was charged with abducting the child, assisting Rafferty in escaping the area and being an accessory to murder after the fact.

The charges leave no doubt as to the fate of the little girl, though neither police nor family have confirmed the child's death. Victoria, known as Tori to her friends and family, has been missing since early April, when she failed to return home after school.

Police have scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. ET to release more details.

The pair, who were taken into custody on Tuesday night, were driven to the Oxford County courthouse on Wednesday morning by police.

Rafferty pulled his shirt over his head to avoid having his image captured by news photographers. McClintic walked into the court wearing a black top and with her dark hair set in tight braids. Reporters in the courtroom said Rafferty broke down in tears while waiting for the judge to appear.

Both were remanded in custody until May 28.

Tori has been missing since April 8. The Grade 3 student was last seen in a grainy surveillance video that showed her walking from school with an unknown woman, who had long black hair and was wearing a white jacket.

Family 'anxiously awaiting' details

"Tara [McDonald, Tori's mother] and I were both given a phone call last night and made aware that two arrests have been made. We're not sure where from or who they are — and they didn't give any details on Victoria. All we know is that two arrests have been made and we'll find out the details later this morning [Wednesday]."

Stafford and McDonald are divorced.

A message posted on the family's Facebook site on Wednesday said the family was "not sure of what is happening," while the comment section had been closed down.

"Out of respect for my family, I have closed down the wall temporarily," wrote Tori's aunt, Rebecca Stafford. "The rumour mill has already been put into overdrive this morning, and we are anxiously awaiting the answers to the same questions you are asking.

"Thank you for understanding my desire to protect my family from further uncertainty."

I know no rose but maybe she lied? I don't know but I am going to sit here in complete denial for now until I hear it from LE. That poor little girl, the  thought....Just so horrible.
