MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A new search for a New York teen missing in South Carolina since April has turned up nothing of significance.

Multiple media outlets reported that a missing persons group searched for Brittanee Drexel after Georgetown County authorities got a new tip.

Monica Caison with the Community United Effort Center for Missing Persons says she took Dawn Drexel to areas in the search for her daughter over the weekend and planned to continue Monday.

Caison says they worked Friday, Saturday and Sunday looking by the Santee River in Georgetown County and in some parts of Charleston County.

Brittanee Drexel was last seen April 25 leaving a Myrtle Beach hotel. The last signal from her cell phone came the next night near the South Santee River.

Police, sheriff’s deputies and a dive team helped with the latest search.

Search for Drexel finds possible clue

After a weeklong search for Brittanee Drexel that involved several law enforcement agencies, officials may have at least one clue to her whereabouts.

A pair of sunglasses, resembling those that the then-17-year-old wore in a photo taken with friends on April 26 - the day she was last seen in Myrtle Beach - were found Monday in an area near the Santee River in Georgetown County, said Monica Caison, founder of the Community United Effort Center for Missing Persons.

The find occurred during a search that started Dec. 3 and ended Thursday. Between 60 and 70 representatives from the CUE Center, Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, Charleston County Sheriff's Office and the Myrtle Beach Police Department searched areas in Georgetown and Charleston counties for the New York teen.

Caison said some local residents were walking around up on the Santee River shoreline looking for wood to build a campfire and discovered the glasses. They immediately contacted the police.

"I just think they thought it could be important because they were female glasses and they were in an unusual place," Caison said. She declined to comment on the appearance of the sunglasses.

Multiple investigators, two dive teams, a helicopter and an underwater robotic scanning camera were used to search the area after the residents turned over the glasses to police, she said.

"It's a large area and obviously we're not done looking for Brittanee, but in that immediate area, we were hoping we would find something else, but we unfortunately didn't," Caison said. "We were working very hard and going back over and back over and back over, I can't tell you how many times. If there's something else out there, it's much farther away."

The sunglasses will be sent to the State Law Enforcement Division for processing, but at this time there is no evidence to confirm or deny that they belonged to Drexel, said Capt. David Knipes with the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Authorities did not find any other clues to Drexel's disappearance through the search, but the investigation will continue.

"If in fact they are Brittanee Drexel's, to even be found after this length of time is a miracle in and of itself and I hope that it will lead to more discovery," Caison said. "The family is definitely distraught over the holidays and we now that they want this to end. Somebody in the community knows what happened to that young lady and I just hope they come forward."

Police began the search late last week after Georgetown County authorities received a new tip in the case.

Drexel was last seen leaving the Blue Water Hotel on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.

A cell phone belonging to Drexel, who was 17 at the time of her disappearance, gave off its last known signal the night of April 26 in the area around U.S. 17 and the South Santee River in Georgetown County, authorities said.

I have never watched the show Jersey Shores but I have seen clips from it...does anyone think that the boys on that show resemble the boy who was questioned in the beginning when Brittanee went missing? the one who left in the middle of the night and was so cocky on tv...Can't remember his name...but that is how I picture this kid to be in real life...just like the Jersey Shores boys on that show...no respect for women..thinking that they are "all that and a bag of chips"

Search for missing Andrews woman postponed
By Tonya Root - troot@thesunnews.com

A search for clues in the disappearance of an Andrews woman, which was planned for this weekend, has been postponed until January because recent heavy rains have flooded portions of the search area, according to Monica Caison with the N.C.-based CUE Center for Missing Persons.

Searchers and police had planned to search for clues in the 2005 disappearance of Crystal Gail Soles after getting new information about the case, but the area they planned to search has standing water in it, Caison said.

Caison has led efforts to search for information about Soles and missing New York teen Brittanee Drexel in Georgetown County this month. More searches in both cases are planned for January, Caison said.

Soles, who was 28 at the time of her disappearance, was last seen early Jan. 24, 2005, as she left Shaw's Corner, an Andrews-area convenience store, authorities said. Her family and CUE officials continue to search for her and hold an annual day of remembrance for her on the date she was last seen.

Last week the discovery of a pair of women's sunglasses on the banks of the Santee River renewed hopes that searchers will find more clues about the disappearance of Drexel, who was last seen April 25 in Myrtle Beach.

A picture was taken of Drexel wearing knockoff designer sunglasses - similar to the pair found at the river - the day she was last seen at a Myrtle Beach hotel while visiting the area for spring break. The site is not far from where her cell phone gave its last known signal that night.

Authorities are investigating all tips and information about the two cases and area residents can call local police or the CUE Center for Missing Persons at 910-343-1131 or go to www.ncmissingpersons.org.

New website expands search for missing NY teen

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - After eight months of searching along the coast of South Carolina, the family of a 17-year-old girl who disappeared while on spring break in Myrtle Beach is hoping a new website will generate leads about her disappearance.

HelpFindBrittaneeDrexel.com features a new way for the community to submit web-generated tips on the disappearance of Brittanee Drexel, who was last seen on April 25 after meeting up with friends from her hometown in Myrtle Beach.

The website also features pictures from search efforts in Horry, Georgetown and Charleston counties for Drexel, in addition to the teen's description, links to search updates and upcoming fundraising events.

Myrtle Beach Police say the New York teen disappeared after she was last seen in the area of 11th Avenue South and 20th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach. Drexel, who was 17 at the time of her disappearance, was in the area against the will of her mother.

Contact was lost between Drexel and her family in New York on April 25, the same night authorities say she disappeared.

Since she went missing, multiple search efforts for the teen have been executed from Horry County to Charleston County. While investigators have searched throughout three counties, each search effort has left police empty handed.

In their most recent attempt, a search team consisting of approximately 70 people combed through an unidentified area of Georgetown County after a pair of knock-off Prada sunglasses were discovered near a body of water.

Those sunglasses, according to investigators, matched those worn by Drexel in a photo taken with friends in Myrtle Beach before her disappearance. Monica Caison with the CUE Center for Missing Persons says the sunglasses were located by a group of people collecting wood for a fire in December.

Members of the CUE Center, in coordination with investigators from the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, Charleston County Sheriff's Office and the Myrtle Beach Police Department used search dogs, multiple boats, divers and a remote-controlled robotic camera to search the immediate area where the Prada sunglasses were found.

Despite using a variety of search tactics, Caison says investigators exhausted their search without any additional leads.

CrimeStoppers of the Lowcountry continues to offer a reward for any information on Drexel's whereabouts.  Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Drexel is urged to contact the agency at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Missing New York teen's family to return for search
By Tonya Root - troot@thesunnews.com

A missing 17-year-old New York girl's family members and friends will return to the Georgetown County area Saturday to search for clues in her disappearance.

Brittanee Drexel has not been seen since she left a Myrtle Beach hotel room in April.

An official Web site for the missing teen was also recently launched after officials and family members learned about several people posing as Drexel on the Internet, said Monica Caison, director of the Community United Effort Center for Missing Persons based in Wilmington, N.C. The organization conducts nationwide searches for missing individuals.

"The internet can be a wonderful tool to get the information out there, but it can also be a vicious attack for the family," Caison said.

"There have been some vicious, horrible things out there."

The site was launched Jan. 1 and as of Monday night, Caison said there had been more than 5,000 hits to it and hundreds of people had left messages of hope for the family as well as information that could help the investigation.

Volunteers and law enforcement officials have focused their searches in the Georgetown County area after a cell phone belonging to Drexel gave off its last known signal the night of April 26 around U.S. 17 and the South Santee River, police said.

Drexel was last seen that night leaving the Blue Water Hotel on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach

In December, a pair of sunglasses, resembling those Drexel wore in a photo taken the day she was last seen in Myrtle Beach was found in an area near the Santee River in Georgetown County.

The sunglasses were sent to the State Law Enforcement Division for processing.

"It's so imperative if anyone finds anything in the woods, they need to call police, especially in that area.

" I don't care if it's a lipstick container," Caison said.

"If you find any kind of article that doesn't belong out there, you need to call police. It could be imperative to this case."

A group will spend the weekend looking for clues about Drexel's disappearance, which has garnered national attention.

Authorities did not conduct any searches during the holidays, but Caison said she has searched the area weekly.

"I've been going down weekly and spending the day with a small team," Caison said. "We're continuing to eliminate space and focus on new areas we've discovered."

Anyone with information about Drexel's disappearance can call Myrtle Beach police at 918-1300 or go to the Web site at www.helpfindbrittaneedrexel.com.

Brittanee Drexel search resumes this weekend

Family members and search crews are back along the Grand Strand this weekend searching for Brittanee Drexel, or any clues that could help explain her disappearance.

Monica Caison, founder of the CUE Center for Missing Persons in North Carolina, is heading the search. A familiar area in Georgetown County will be the focus this weekend. That’s where investigators traced Drexel’s cell phone signal April 25, 2009, the night she was reported missing.

The Rochester, NY teen went last known to be seen while vacationing in Myrtle Beach with friends, even though her mother asked her not to go. Surveillance video shows her leaving the Bar Harbor Hotel on Ocean Boulevard, and she has been missing since.

Despite multiple searches in Horry, Georgetown, and Charleston counties for the last eight months, as well as much national attention, no solid leads have been found.

Some boaters found a pair of sunglasses along the Santee River in Georgetown County in December. They resemble the ones Drexel was wearing the day of her disappearance and have been sent to the SC Law Enforcement Division for DNA testing.

Count on News13 and scnow.com for any information that comes from this weekend’s search.
