Schenectady woman’s disappearance still a mystery
Monday, May 4, 2009

SCHENECTADY — Easter 2008 was a fun one for Lutrica Steele and her family.
She spent it with two of her children and her sister. They went out to dinner, went to the mall and, of course, had an Easter Egg hunt.

There was none of that this year for Steele.

By Easter 2009, she had been missing for 11 months.

She has now been missing for a full year.

Steele was last seen May 1, 2008, when she told her mother on Webster Street in Mont Pleasant she’d be back for her children and for a barbecue later that day.

“It’s very hard to comprehend it all, really,” Steele’s sister, Andrea Wakefield, said Monday. “This Easter, I kept remembering how she was here just last Easter when we did so many things together.”

She was reported missing quickly, the disappearance publicized last June when police asked anyone who may have seen her to call police.

Police spokesman Sgt. Eric Clifford said Monday any leads have dried up. They’re asking for more help in finding her.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police tip hotline at 788-6566.

Steele, also known as Lutrica Zasa and Lutrica Zasa-Steele, is described as a white female, 5’6” tall, 125 pounds, with light brown hair and blue eyes. She was 27 when she disappeared.

The family, Wakefield said, remains at a loss as to any reason why Steele would leave on her own.

Wakefield, who lives near Utica, recalled hearing of the recent discovery of a body along the Mohawk River in Rotterdam and wondering if it could be her sister. The body turned out to be that of another person who had been missing.

Steele has four children, two of whom she was caring for when she disappeared. The other two remain with an ex-husband.

Steele’s mother, Ethel Zasa, cares for the two now, ages 3 and 16 months.

Especially with the older child, the family has been advised not to bring up their mother at this point, Wakefield said.

“It’s pretty hard,” Ethel Zasa said Monday. “It’s hard with the kids. But you do what you have to do.”
