Patz 'killer' returned to work at bodega years after '79 slaying: sister

He went back to the scene of the crime.

The sister of admitted Etan Patz killer Pedro Hernandez today revealed that her brother returned to work at a Manhattan bodega several years after allegedly strangling the innocent 6-year-old in the basement of the same store in 1979.

Hernarndez, who last week confessed to killing Etan when he was an 18-year-old stockboy at the SoHo bodega, had first quit working there and moved to New Jersey shortly after Etan vanished on March 25, 1979.

After getting married to his first wife, Daisy, in south Jersey and staying married for several years while living there, the couple divorced.

Hernandez then moved back to New York City and resumed work at the bodega on the corner of West Broadway and Prince Street while living with his sister Luz, said another sister, Norma Hernandez, to reporters today at her Camden, NJ, home.

Psychiatrists Puzzled by Confession in Patz Case
By BENEDICT CAREY
June 1, 2012

Pedro Hernandez in an undated photo, left, and as photographed by the police in May.

His confession came more than three decades after the fact. He had no apparent motive or criminal record. And his mental struggles — he had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder — were reportedly being treated.
Details about the life of Pedro Hernandez, who confessed last week to the 1979 murder of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old who disappeared while walking to a bus stop in SoHo, are still far too scarce to make any authoritative judgments, psychiatrists say.

But if Mr. Hernandez’s trajectory from obscure family man to prime suspect appears highly unusual, so, too, is the 33-year-old case, and perhaps also its solution. Some experts offered possible explanations for how he could have strangled the boy and lived with the secret all these years, while others wondered if he confessed to a crime he did not commit, a common phenomenon in notorious crimes.

All agreed that there were huge gaps in Mr. Hernandez’s life story. Did he have a history of erratic or violent behavior? When was he found to have a mental disorder? When did he begin treatment? If he killed Etan, could he have killed other people and never gotten caught?

Wife of confessed Etan Patz killer says through attorney that husband suffers from delusions
Rosemary Hernandez breaks silence, wants DA to understand severity of Pedro Hernandez's mental illness
June 4, 2012

The wife of the man police say confessed to killing 6-year-old Etan Patz in 1979 has broken her silence to say her husband has “suffered from delusions” for years.

Speaking out for the first time through her newly hired attorney, Rosemary Hernandez said her husband, Pedro, has long been mentally troubled.

The attorney, Robert Gottlieb, told the Daily News on Monday that Rosemary Hernandez “asked me to assist her in making sure that the district attorney understands the severity of her husband’s mental illness.”

“He has suffered from delusions and other mental illnesses for many years,” Gottlieb said.

Hernandez hired Gottlieb last week after she says she was repeatedly pursued by NYPD detectives trying to get her to corroborate her husband’s claims.
 ::snipping2::
The day police took Hernandez into custody at his home outside Camden, N.J., Rosemary and the couple’s daughter, Becky, were driven to New York by city detectives.

Since then, the police have scrambled to corroborate Pedro Hernandez’s claims. Gottlieb says detectives repeatedly tried to question Rosemary Hernandez.

“Rosemary feels that the police have harassed her, even though she cooperated fully with them when her husband was arrested,” Gottlieb said.

A key issue is Pedro Hernandez’s mental state. His attorney has said he has been diagnosed as both schizophrenic and bipolar and has taken medication for both conditions.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. has yet to bring the case to a grand jury, and sources say the FBI has expressed reservations about the integrity of the confession.

Police have said that Hernandez told relatives years ago he had killed an unnamed boy in New York City, and some of the relatives have backed up that assertion.

Etan Patz case: Camden police say there's no record of report from Pedro Hernandez's sister
June 6, 2012

Camden police Tuesday said they have no records to corroborate a woman’s claim that she told them her brother had killed a child in New York.

Pedro Hernandez, 51, of Maple Shade was arrested last month after confessing to police that he strangled Etan Patz in a bodega near the Patz home in May 1979 and then dumped the 6-year-old’s body in an alley beside the Manhattan shop. Hernandez, who was a stock clerk at the bodega at the time, has been charged with second-degree murder.

His sister, Camden resident Norma Hernandez, has said she told police more than 25 years ago that her brother had slain a child.

Norma Hernandez, 54, said she did not recall the year she reached out to police, but she believed it was shortly after investigators began focusing on a suspect in the Patz case. That man, convicted child molester Jose Ramos, was named in numerous published reports in 1985.

"We have yet to find any reports that Ms. Hernandez claims she made," Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson told The Star-Ledger.

"I’ve also spoken to a retired Camden police captain who was a detective during the time frame in question," Thomson said. "He distinctly remembers the Patz case and the visceral emotions it invoked of every cop to find Etan or catch the suspected abductor. He also found it hard to believe that any cop at that time would have been dismissive of such an egregious claim."

The news comes as the Manhattan district attorney deliberates whether to bring the case before a grand jury.

Etan Patz Disappearance: Police Search NJ Home of Suspect, Pedro Hernandez
By RICHARD ESPOSITO and DAVID F. MEYERS (@davidfmeyers) | ABC News – 5 hrs ago Edit to add date.  MB  June 6, 2012
 ::snipping2::
In a quest for evidence to bolster Hernandez's confession for the New York City 6-year-old's 1979 murder, at least a dozen detectives and investigators from New York City and New Jersey, two marked Maple Shade police cars, three New York unmarked vehicles, and a crime scene van arrived at the home this afternoon.

Two uniformed local officers entered the apartment with guns drawn after two women with keys opened the door for them, including Hernandez's wife, Rosemary Hernandez. They swept the apartment and then a New York team approached the door, explained the warrant to the two women and began the search.
  ::snipping2::
A photographer entered the house along with the investigators, who arrived at the scene at about 4 p.m.

"It is part of the continuing investigation," said NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Paul Browne.

Browne would not comment further on the investigation, nor the scope of the warrant.

Asked multiple times by ABC News what the reason was for the search, officers at scene declined any comment.

Bombshell evidence in Etan slay
Kid clothes, toy at ‘killer’ home

By JAMIE SCHRAM Police Bureau Chief
Last Updated: 4:25 AM, June 8, 2012

Nypd detectives found an old toy and worn clothing that are “age appropriate” for Etan Patz hidden in the New Jersey home of the boy’s confessed killer, law-enforcement sources told The Post yesterday.

Investigators planned to test the items for DNA — and hope they will serve as key evidence in the murder case against 51-year-old former SoHo bodega stockboy Pedro Hernandez, the sources said.

Cops were stunned by the discovery Wednesday as they executed a search warrant at Hernandez’s home in Maple Shade, near Camden.

“When they were found, the air was sucked right out of the room, [it was] a very emotional moment,” a source said.

The clothes and unidentified toy appear to be from the late 1970s. The clothes were worn and “not clean,” the source said. “Imagine what your drawers would look like 33 years later.”

The sources wouldn’t describe the clothing, but the blond, blue-eyed boy was wearing blue pants, a blue jacket and a black Eastern Air Lines pilot’s cap when he disappeared on May 25, 1979.

It was unclear whether cops have shown the new evidence to Etan’s parents, Stanley and Julia Patz, to see whether the couple could identify the items.

The sources noted that Hernandez also has a son, and that the items would be tested to see if they belonged to him.

“They have to send it to a lab or analyze it,” a second source said.

Police don’t believe children’s clothes found at Pedro Hernandez home belonged to slain Etan Patz

Hernandez claimed to have killed boy in 1979, but there's still no physical evidence

By Rocco Parascandola, Janon Fisher AND Corky Siemaszko / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

A child-sized pair of shorts and a Matchbox car were found at the home of the mentally-ill New Jersey man who claims he strangled little Etan Patz, but police don’t think they belonged to the 6-year-old Manhattan boy who vanished three decades ago.

“We found nothing that we believe belongs to the boy,” one source told the Daily News on Friday, noting that Etan wasn’t wearing shorts when he vanished 33 years ago — he was wearing blue pants.

Out of an abundance of cautions, investigators intend to do a DNA test on the shorts to rule out the possibility they belonged to Etan, sources said.

They also removed a computer hard drive and some papers from the residence, but saw no sign of Etan’s beloved black Eastern Airlines cap, which he was also wearing when he disappeared 33-years-ago, sources said.

Suspect Pedro Hernandez and his wife Rosemary got the shorts and toy from neighbors in Maple Shade, N.J., and were intending to sell them at yard sales, sources said.

Chilling Etan-slay clues are revealed; cops waited two weeks before asking to search 'killer' home

By NATASHA VELEZ and JAMIE SCHRAM

A search of the home of Etan Patz’s accused killer turned up a pair of boys’ white Fruit of the Loom briefs, a yellow Matchbox-style car etched with the word “Stryker” and a pair of blue children’s-size shorts, sources said yesterday.

The items were found secreted in an attic room of the Maple Shade, NJ, house of Pedro Hernandez, who used the space as his bedroom, sources said.

Hernandez, 51, confessed May 24 to killing Etan, who went missing on his way to a SoHo bus stop in 1979.

Meanwhile yesterday, records showed the NYPD waited two weeks to even ask permission to search Hernandez’s home, first applying for a warrant June 6.

Etan Patz case: NYPD searches new part of Soho building where suspected killer Pedro Hernandez once worked
Police gain access to part of building that they had not searched before

August 8, 2012

The NYPD returned Wednesday to the Soho building where the suspected killer of Etan Patz once worked — and searched a part of the building that they had never accessed before, police sources said.

Investigators were later seen leaving the building at West Broadway and Prince St. with at least one paper bag filled with possible evidence.

The building now houses an eyeglass shop, but it used to be the bodega where Pedro Hernandez worked at the time of Patz’s disappearance in 1979.
 ::snipping2::
A police source said Wednesday’s basement search is not tied to any new developments. But the source added that police were given access to a portion of the buillding that they had not searched before.

Detectives were also seen yesterday at the nearby home of Hernandez’s sister.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly would not comment on a report that Hernandez’s first wife told police that in the mid-1980s she found a picture of Patz from a police flier hidden in Hernandez’s belongings.

The picture was not found when police searched Hernandez's New Jersey home after his arrest.

Investigators seek more evidence in NYC Etan Patz case, return to site of former grocery store
August 8, 2012

NEW YORK — New York City police returned on Wednesday to the site of a former grocery store to look for evidence in the 1979 disappearance of a 6-year-old boy.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne confirmed investigators searched the retail space in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, where the alleged abductor of Etan Patz once worked.
Browne characterized the search as routine, but wouldn’t discuss what was being sought or if it was found. The effort, he said, “wasn’t based on any new information.”

Pedro Hernandez has been charged in the slaying of Patz, one of the first missing children whose picture ever appeared on a milk carton. He remains held without bail in a psychiatric hospital jail ward.
 ::snipping2::
Hernandez’s sister has said she heard secondhand that he told a church prayer group in the 1980s that he killed a child in New York City. But Hernandez, now 51, wasn’t eyed as a suspect in Etan’s disappearance until last month, when a tipster contacted police.

Police say Hernandez, of Maple Shade, N.J., told investigators he lured the boy into the shop with the promise of a soda. He allegedly said he led the child to the basement, choked him and left his body in a bag of trash about a block away.

The court case has been put on hold while as doctors evaluate Hernandez’s mental fitness for trial and investigators seek more evidence beyond his alleged confession.

Etan Patz Investigation Returns to SoHo Basement
August 8, 2012

Investigators returned to the lower Manhattan basement today where first-grader Etan Patz was allegedly murdered in 1979, the latest attempt to find clues in a case that has gripped and haunted New York City for 33 years.

Police removed several large bags of material from the site where Patz's accused killer told investigators earlier this year that he killed the boy.
 ::snipping2::
Today's search was carried out because police gained access to part of the site previously inaccessible to them.
"We always intended to go back to the location," said Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Paul Browne, "We did so at a time that was more convenient to the owner."

Browne said there were "no new developments" nor was there any new information that brought police back to the location.

Sources said investigators were looking for physical evidence that Patz had been there, including clothing, blood and DNA that may have survived more than three decades.
 ::snipping2::
Hernandez had admitted to family members and friends as early as 1981 that he "done a bad thing and killed a child in New York." Someone went to police in April after police searched the basement, but found nothing linking Patz to that room.

Currently, the case against Hernandez hangs on his confession. Sources said police hoped to find evidence that corroborates Hernandez's story.

Patz's killer kept photo of boy for years, ex-wife says
August 8, 2012

The man who confessed to killing Etan Patz kept a photo of the boy among his personal possessions for years after the murder, his ex-wife told investigators.

Pedro Hernandez' ex-wife Daisy Rivera said she found the picture, which appeared to be cut from one of the missing persons posters that blanketed the city in 1979, in a “box of his personal papers” that he kept in their New Jersey home, a law enforcement source told The Post.

“She brought up that once she was going through a box of his with personal papers and inside that box was the picture of Patz,” the source said. “She said it looked like it came from a missing poster that was put up in the neighborhood.

When confronted with the photo, an angry Hernandez freaked out, Rivera told cops.

“She asked ‘What is this?’ He said ‘What are you doing? Put that away! Don’t go through my stuff!” the source said.

Cops got a search warrant for the Maple Shade, New Jersey house where Hernandez was living with his second wife and daughter - but came up empty.

“One of the things they were looking for when they got a search warrant for the house was this picture or this box but they didn’t find it so they’ll have to use her testimony” if there’s a trial, the source said.

Etan Patz Search: NYPD Finds Only Garbage After Unsealing Coal Room In Soho
August 10, 2012

MANHATTAN — The NYPD returned to the former SoHo bodega where Etan Patz was allegedly murdered to break into an old storage room where coal that fueled the building’s furnace used to be kept, DNAinfo.com New York has learned.

All they found was garbage.

The coal room is in the basement of 448 West Broadway, which used to house the bodega where Etan's confessed killer Pedro Hernandez once worked.

When detectives first swarmed the building after Hernandez's arrest in May, they found the room inaccessible, save for small apertures where coal could be dumped in from a chute above and shovelled out through an opening at the bottom.

Detectives could peer into it, but could not get in.

When cops returned to the building Wednesday, they were with Emergency Service Unit officers equipped with saws and other tools to cut through the wall. Because the room housed coal for so long, cops first did an air quality check to
ensure no noxious fumes would be released, sources said.

Once inside the coal room, though, they found nothing related to the boy's disappearance.

Evidence teams collected all the trash they found, sources said, but they do not believe it will yield any clues to what happened to Etan.

Former top suspect in Etan Patz case to be freed

Man previously believed to have been responsible for Jewish boy's disappearance in 1979 to be freed from prison after 25 years
Associated Press Published:  10.29.12,

While prosecutors weigh what to do about a suspect who surprisingly surfaced this spring in the landmark 1979 disappearance case of Etan Patz, the man who was the prime suspect for years is about to go free after more than two decades in prison for molesting other children.

These two threads in the tangled story are set to cross next month, a twist that evokes decades of uncertainties and loose ends in the search for what happened to the sandy-haired 6-year-old last seen walking to his Manhattan school bus stop.

The new suspect, Pedro Hernandez, has been charged with Etan's murder after police said he emerged as a suspect and confessed this spring. But there's no public indication that authorities have found anything beyond his admission to implicate him, and his lawyer has said Hernandez is mentally ill.

The Pennsylvania inmate, Jose Ramos, was declared responsible for Etan's death in a civil court, but the Manhattan district attorney's office has said there wasn't enough evidence to charge him criminally. After serving 25 years on child molestation convictions in Pennsylvania, he's set to be freed Nov. 7, about a week before prosecutors are due to indicate whether they believe there's evidence enough to keep going after Hernandez.
