Jimmy Carter Says (fill in the blank) Independence Crucial to US Security
Quote
The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator John Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, said the downside of U.S. dependence on imported oil is growing:
"Economically, it results in a massive, continuous transfer of American wealth to American exporting nations and it leaves us vulnerable to price and supply shocks,"
said John Kerry.
"But the true cost of our addiction extends far beyond what we pay at the pump. Its revenues empower and sustain despots and dictators and it obliges our military to defend our energy supply in volatile regions of the world at very great expense.

Substitute the ideas of 'Free Trade', 'globalization' and 'job losses'
'Economically, Free Trade results in a massive, continuous transfer of American wealth to American exporting nations, rich global corporations, and rich transnational individuals, and Free Trade leaves us vulnerable to price and supply shocks,'
'But the true cost of our addiction to Free Trade extends far beyond what we pay in unemployment and welfare. Its revenues empower and sustain despots, dictators, rich global corporations, and it obliges our military to defend these twisted relationships in volatile regions of the world at very great expense.'
If energy independence is so good for the country, why not a nation free of 99% of other imports to?
Imagine what a great nation we'd be if we kept our green at home, supported Americans and American values, and provided for Americans by Americans.
Would we have more money to spread around to the less fortunate? Would we be building a stronger America to leave to our children? Would we be creating jobs at home? Would families be able to support themselves through employment instead of welfare?
Energy independence is a good thing for America.
Why aren't we focused on freedom from welfare dependency?
Why aren't we focused on manufacturing independence too? No more imports?
Does 'Free Trade' mean we will never prosper? Does 'Free Trade' mean we can't have jobs at home or live in a nation that is mostly independent of all others?
Independence is a good thing.

BISMARCK — The longer the nation goes without a coherent energy policy, the more difficult it becomes for the country to shift to energy self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility.
Washington should be aggressive, yet realistic, in creating a sensible energy policy for the nation. The strategies involved need to be clear and make good sense.
It must be a policy for all 50 states, giving consideration to their different needs and demands.
The North Dakota Public Service Commission recently stepped into the political fray surrounding energy by announcing its opposition to the “cap-and-trade” method of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. The state’s three PSC commissioners took “cap-and-trade” to task for being a smokescreen for imposing an “appropriations policy” rather than being a tool for improving the environment and slowing global warming.

Cap and trade creates an elaborate false economy, whereby utilities with low emissions, under the cap, can sell that perceived benefit to utilities with higher greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a strategy loosely related to the “sin” taxes on tobacco and alcohol products used to discourage use. We’ve also heard talk about putting a high tax on gasoline to encourage efficiency and discourage use. These are taxes used to change behavior. With these kinds of taxes, there’s no clear cause and effect relationship between government’s need for revenue and the level of taxes. It
provides a bounty for those wanting to increase spending.
Conversely, if the federal government needs to fund a program, the cost is established, a tax created and the level of tax set to raise the needed money.

Another idea to reduce energy needs in the U.S. - reduce the growth of consumers. Shore up the borders and reduce illegal immigration. I think spending and taxing could be reduced if we eliminated the incentives for illegal immigration - welfare, healthcare, and education, among other things.

Taxing Carbon designed to fail.
For anyone supporting reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: kudos to you. A suggestion; support legislation capable of actually reducing emissions instead taxing them.
A significant idea, offer tax incentives to businesses that create alternative fuels, currently there is no alternative to the fuels we use today. There is nothing to switch over to. The fuels we use today will be needed until there is an alternative.
The only thing that will change at all is a 50 to 90% higher cost for energy.
Another unintended consequence; the fresh flooding of American business going overseas, and the jobs that go along with them, as business seeks cheaper alternatives from foreign sources not limited by this tax
.
I think the migration of American jobs is intentional. No jobs for you America. Just another example of the pandering to large rich global corporation and foreign nations. Our government exists to report to people in Beijing.

Cap and Trade has not worked in Europe, it has however cost them a 5 to 10% loss in Standard of Living. In other words, it has made every citizen poorer.
Emissions? They have not changed at all.

If the nation became energy independent tomorrow, how would government fund all this spending? It's like the temporary income tax. It will be with us forever and there will never be alternative energy.
It's the same kind of logic that Detroit used for years to prevent the growth of alterntive vehicles and energy. When the government gets involved, its the worst possible thing. The government has no reason to pursue clean air or altervative energy - it would destroy their revenue stream.
If it was really about clean air or saving the planet, money would go to those things directly. It looks like the money gained will go to more government cesspool spending. Nothing that benefits the needy, only the greedy and politically connected.
