Don't throw nanners, but.....

Not everyone on the sex offenders list is a child sex offender!  Remember that.  There are some on the list who at the age of 18 was charged with rape on their 17 year old girl friend, as well.  Not taking up for anyone with that bit of info either.

I know of several on the sex offenders list who should not be on the list, and I know of at least two that should have served time for their actions and been on the sex offender list but because the rape of the minors happened in 1960, it was deemed horrible to have such info in the public and the children in those cases were made out to be the instigator!  How can a 4 year old be responsible for enticing an adult (19 year old)?  Anyway, not all sex offenders are child sex offenders.  Not all child sex offenders have been caught.

Get to know your neighbor, friends, and their neighbors if your child/grandchildren/nieces/ nephews spend any time with them.  Don't just take it to the first level, go into it, check out neighbors of friends, too.

This is EXACTLY why I believe the public should be able to see at least a *summary* of the crime.  If I saw a guy on the SO registry that had sex with his girlfriend who was 17, then I wouldn't necessarily consider him a threat to me or my children.

I agree 100%.  It's the pedos, pornographers, abusers of children that we need to focus on.  Here's a perfect example of why what Leroy said is so true.  You may remember long ago I made a post about a little girl who's father had been molesting her.  I won't reiterate the story here, but he was arrested and plead guilty to indecent assault.  If you look on the Megan's Law website--that's what you see--indecent assault.  There's no clue it involved an 8 year old girl. So unsuspecting parents allowed their children to be around him until one particularly vigilant parent pulled his criminal records and learned the facts behind his conviction. . .

Rapist jailed in connection with missing Nevaeh
BY TAMMY STABLES BATTAGLIA • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • May 29, 2009

A convicted rapist has been jailed as a person of interest in the disappearance of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan. Investigators in Monroe said he apparently owns the van driven by the girl's mother's boyfriend, who is a registered sex offender, too.

Roy Smith, 48, of Monroe, who also was friends with Nevaeh's mother, has been in the Monroe County Jail since Monday while the Michigan Department of Corrections decides whether he violated his parole, spokesman Russ Marlan said. Smith was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in a 1991 rape case, according to court records.

Smith apparently owned the van driven by George Kennedy, the boyfriend of Nevaeh's mother and a key person of interest. Marlan would not discuss the allegations that led Smith back to jail.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said an 8-year-old neighbor told FBI agents that Nevaeh was kidnapped by a "bad man" and stabbed.

"A child is still missing, and we're still following up on leads," Crutchfield said.

Police comb hotel room for link to missing girl

With black evidence dust staining 4 feet up the walls, a warrant laid out nearby and a condom on a dresser, the child's toys in convicted sex offender George Kennedy's hotel room stand out.

Three miniature metal motorcycles with shiny wheels and bright paint lay on a desk near the door.

Police don't know whether the toys belong to a child. But they're similar to the toys that were favorites of missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan, toys that her grandmother clings to now, hoping the Monroe girl will be found.

As the search for Nevaeh continues into the sixth day today, Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said hundreds of investigators still are on the case. Divers scouring two quarries Wednesday found nothing, so investigators are reinterviewing residents of the Charlotte Arms apartments where Nevaeh lives and was last seen.

"It's expensive, but you can't put a price on human life," Crutchfield said.

Investigators are looking at two "persons of interest": Kennedy, her mother's boyfriend, and Roy Lee Smith, another acquaintance of her mother.

Smith, 48, of Monroe has been in the Monroe County Jail since Monday while authorities decide whether he violated his parole, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said Thursday.

Smith was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct after a woman said he raped her twice on May 12, 1991 -- in his car at Sterling State Park and along a lane near Colf and Timbers roads in Monroe County's Exeter Township, according to court records.

Smith was sentenced to 15 to 50 years in prison. Released in February 2008, he apparently owns the van driven by Kennedy. Marlan would not discuss the allegations that led Smith back to a cell.

Kennedy, 39, also is in Monroe County Jail on allegations that he violated his parole by his contact with Nevaeh and her family. In March 2002, Kennedy was convicted of home invasion and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct for raping a teen in 1998 behind a gas station at I-75 and Newport Road in northwest Monroe County.

Kennedy was sentenced to serve two to 15 years in prison but was released on parole in July 2007. His parole is scheduled to end in July.

Part of Kennedy's parole agreement includes orders that an adult must be present when he is with a child under age 17, and he is not allowed to have a romantic relationship with a person associated with a child. Kennedy also is forbidden to have children's clothing, toys or games, and he must stay at least 1,000 feet from schools, child care centers, parks, pools, playgrounds and arcades, records show.

Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, said Thursday that Smith met the girl once at the family's apartment.

"I've only met Roy Smith through George Kennedy," she said. "He's only been as far as my parking lot to pick me up," to go "driving around, going out to eat a couple of times. It's Monroe -- you can only do so many things."

The last people to see Nevaeh were two playmates, ages 6 and 8, riding bikes and scooters in the parking lot of the complex about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The 6-year-old told investigators that she last saw Nevaeh going into the woods to meet "Daddy George," according to a search warrant FBI agents used to comb Kennedy's hotel room Wednesday. The 8-year-old told an FBI agent that Nevaeh was "kidnapped" and that a "bad man stabbed Nevaeh in the stomach with a knife," according to the warrant.

The 8-year-old also told investigators that he tried to help Nevaeh, but could not. He was unable to convey clearly that he actually saw the events, "possibly due to developmental level or trauma," investigators wrote in the warrant.

On Wednesday, investigators found a pair of shorts and a towel both stained with blood in Kennedy's hotel room, as well as bloodstains on the wall and photos of a girl who looked similar to Nevaeh, according to the search warrant's return. State Police investigators also discovered human blood on a silver multipurpose tool found in a glove box of the van Kennedy was driving.

Jennifer Buchanan met Kennedy at their parole office after she was convicted of breaking into homes in Monroe in 2006, according to Buchanan and police investigation reports.

Sherry Buchanan, Jennifer's mother, took custody of Nevaeh while Jennifer spent 11 months in jail. Jennifer Buchanan said the promise of a future with her daughter when she was released is what kept her going.

"I mostly thought about my daughter," she said, adding that she, her mother and Nevaeh have lived together ever since. "She was the one that helped me turn around. I cherished every moment I was with her."

Nevaeh is 3 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 45 pounds. She was wearing a light-blue, sleeveless shirt with red and white horizontal stripes and knee-length jeans when she disappeared.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-243-7070. Donations to a reward fund, which now totals nearly $10,000, can be made by calling 800-681-0687.

Sheriff: No one cleared in investigation
by Ray Kisonas , last modified May 29. 2009 10:20AM
Investigators have received more than 500 tips and have looked into 422 of them as the massive investigation into the disappearance of Nevaeh Buchanan continues into its fifth day.
Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said this morning that 240 visitors and residents of the Charlotte Arms apartment complex where Nevaeh disappeared were interviewed Thursday and investigators today will continue to contact anyone associated with those people who have been interviewed.
"We are branching out," the sheriff said. "We are continuing to follow all leads and tips."
A daily 11 a.m. news conference by the authorities is planned for today.

Lab results from DNA evidence collected during the investigation are not yet completed, but the sheriff said the case has been given high priority.

The sheriff said several persons of interest, including two identified local men with sexual assault backgrounds, have been developed and neither has been named nor eliminated as a suspect.
Sheriff Crutchfield said this morning that despite a reported alibi for George Kennedy, a friend of the family who is restricted from being around children because of his past, he remains a person of interest.
"Nobody has been cleared," the sheriff said.
Sheriff Crutchfield has not commented on specifics of the case, including evidence collected and the people who have been interviewed.
The DNA results are from blood-stained items, such as clothing and a multi-purpose tool, that were recovered from Mr. Kennedy’s motel room and van. Mr. Kennedy, 39, and Roy L. Smith, 48, both registered sex offenders, are or were friends of Nevaeh’s mother, Jennifer Buchanan, 24, who served time in prison for burglary.
Mr. Kennedy served time for sexually assaulting a Newport teen several years ago and Mr. Smith was released from prison in 2008 after serving 15 years in prison on a conviction of criminal sexual conduct, third degree, and other charges, such as larceny and breaking and entering.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Mr. Smith was sentenced to 15 to 50 years in prison by a Monroe County Circuit Court judge in 1993 for a sexual assault that occurred in 1991.
Today, police are continuing to follow up on tips that have been forwarded to a 100-member task force, which maintains its headquarters at the Emergency Management Division building on N. Raisinville Rd.
On Thursday, FBI agents again searched the 108-unit Charlotte Arms apartment complex on N. Macomb St. where Nevaeh disappeared Sunday night. Several residents there said their apartment was searched up to four times by investigators.
"They checked my closets and under the bed," said resident Jessica Brock as she sat on her deck holding her daughter, 10-month-old Riley. "The first night, they came here three times."
Diane Edwards said her apartment also has been searched several times. Under the circumstances, she said it’s not a problem.
"For this reason, I don’t care," Ms. Edwards said. "I’m more than willing to cooperate."
Jeff Morris said his apartment was searched three times. He, too, was understanding and had no problem allowing investigators to look all they wanted.
"They’re just doing their job," Mr. Morris said. "It doesn’t bother me at all."
Investigators acknowledged that the longer the case goes without a resolution, the more difficult it becomes.
"Kidnapping is a complex case," said FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Edward Hanko.
"Sometimes it takes months to solve, sometimes it takes years. But I’m not saying that’s going to happen here."
Meanwhile, family members continue to wait and hold out hope that Nevaeh is alive. They have been keeping vigil at the clubhouse and offering support to one another. Sherry Buchanan, Nevaeh’s grandmother, said she is disgusted at the thought that someone in this community could have kidnapped a 5-year-old girl.
"There’s a lot of sick people out there," she said. "But we just want her back. Just let her go."

SEARCH CONTINUES FOR MONROE GIRL
Police focus on sex offender; 2nd 'person of interest' also in custody

MONROE - George Kennedy, a paroled sex offender and key person of interest in the disappearance of Nevaeh Buchanan, was the focus of a state police investigation in 2001 after he was accused of making sexual advances on teenage girls.

Police records show that Kennedy, 38, was accused of sexually harassing teenagers in Monroe County's Exeter Township and was convicted of raping a girl in 1998.

Roy Lee Smith, who authorities said yesterday also is a "person of interest" in the abduction of 5-year-old Nevaeh, also is a registered sex offender like Kennedy.

A Monroe County Circuit Court jury convicted Smith of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in the rape of a woman in 1991. Smith, 48, was released from prison in February, 2008.

But since Nevaeh's abduction on Sunday, both Smith and Kennedy have been taken into custody at the Monroe County jail on parole violations. State corrections officials said they'll investigate in regards to parole regulations.

Nevaeh was reported missing about 8:24 p.m. Sunday, nearly an hour after her mother could not find the girl outside their Macomb Street apartment.

Kennedy, 39, who has been described by police and relatives as the boyfriend of Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, was in police custody within six hours after the sheriff's investigation began.

Kennedy was released from prison in April, 2003, after serving 13 months for crimes against two underage teenage girls.

(NECN/WJBK) - Police in Monroe, Michigan, have identified a second so-called "person of interest" in the disappearance of a five-year-old girl.

Monroe police identified Roy Smith, a registered sex offender, as a new "person of interest," although no details were released.

Smith and another registered sex offender, who is also a "person of interest," George Kennedy, was reportedly the child's mother's boyfriend, but relatives say he was just a friend.

Both Smith and Kennedy were arrested on unrelated charges.

About 70 federal agents joined local police in the search for Nevaeh Buchanan, who last was seen Sunday evening in the parking lot of an apartment building in Monroe, 40 miles south of Detroit.

Neighbors have erected a makeshift memorial near where she was last seen to show their support.

"I want my baby back. She's in my heart still yet," says Nevaeh's grandmother, Sherry Buchanan.

"They're praying that if something did happen, she's in heaven and mommy's taking care of her," says Patricia Blakemore.

Person of interest's father speaks out

MONROE, MICH. -- As the search for Neveah Buchanan entered its fourth day, rescue teams focused on searching two quarries around Monroe, Michigan.   Though they were using high tech equipment to search the water, both search crews came up empty.  The family is planning a massive search on Friday afternoon focusing on areas outside central Monroe.

Down in Napoleon, Ohio, George Kennedy's father spoke to the media for the first time.  Though he hasn't spoke to his son in over a week, Jake Kennedy was far from mincing words when it comes to his thoughts on his son being a person of interest.

"If I found out he had anything to do with it, then I don't have a son," Kennedy said.  "Because I didn't raise him that way."

Just the thought of his son being linked to Neveah's disappearance has Jake's stomach in knots.

"It hurts," Kennedy said.  "Even to be suspected of being involved; he has kids of his own.  There's no way in heck he would even hurt a kid."

On the other hand, Kennedy stressed that if George is charged he will have to fend for himself.

"You got to let him live his own life," Kennedy said. "He has to pay his own consequences.   I didn't make them for him and I'm not gonna suffer for him."

Good Morning Monkeys and Guest!!!

I think this sorry azz mother needs to be thrown in jail to cool it also. I listened to that phone interview and wanted to choke her. The comment of hers that George and Smith are not relevant to what happened to her daughter just ran my blood pressure sky high. Geeshhhhhhhhh! POS in my opinion.
