Search Resumes Sunday for Missing Nevaeh

MONROE, Mich. (AP) - The search continues Sunday for a 5-year-old Monroe girl.

Nevaeh Buchanan was last seen a week ago tonight in the parking lot of her apartment complex in the city 40 miles south of Detroit.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield has said there are at least two people "of interest" in the case, including a friend of Nevaeh's mother. Thirty-nine-year-old George Kennedy is in custody on an unrelated parole violation.

Police have named a third man, James Easter of Monroe, a person of interest but aren't saying why. The 69-year-old Easter is being held on unrelated charges and was questioned yesterday.

Search For Missing Girl, 5, Continues

MONROE, Mich. -- A third man has been named a person of interest in the case of a missing 5-year-old Monroe girl.

James Easter, 64, of Monroe was taken in for questioning Saturday.

Easter is being held on unrelated charges. Police have not said why he has been named a person of interest in the case.

Investigators would only say that Easter frequently visits a woman, who may be a family member or his girlfriend, at the Charlotte Arms apartment complex where Nevaeh Buchanan lives. She was last seen Sunday riding her scooter in the parking lot of the complex.

Police believe she was abducted and is in extreme danger.

Boxes of evidence were carried away from Easter's Monroe home, which is about two miles from the Charlotte Arms apartments, and taken to the Michigan State Crime Lab.

He is being held on arson charges. Neighbors told Local 4 he burns a lot of things in his yard, but other than that -- he keeps to himself.

Two other men, George Kennedy and Roy Lee Smith, both convicted sex offenders were also named people of interest in the case.

Police said Kennedy and the girl's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, have been dating.

Preliminary DNA results on blood from a knife collected from Kennedy's vehicle failed to match Nevaeh's blood.

Smith is the owner of Kennedy's vehicle. Kennedy is being held on suspicion of parole violation. According to his parole, he is not to date a woman who has a child under the age of 17.

Sources told Local 4 both men are expected to be cleared and released from jail.

Jennifer Buchanan told Local 4 she never believed Kennedy was innocent.

"I always thought, at the bottom of my heart, I thought he (Kennedy) did not have anything to do with it," she said.

A Deeper Look Into Kennedy's Life

Family, friends and community members continued to hold private citizen searches and candlelight vigils over the weekend.

More than 100 people prayed for Nevaeh's safe return at a candlelight vigil Saturday evening.

Six hundred people searched for Nevaeh Friday night in ditches, fields, and forests. Some people searched for the missing girl until 6 a.m. in the morning.

Another private citizen search has been organized at noon Sunday at the Kmart in Monroe. Searchers are asked to wear yellow shirts or yellow ribbons.

Investigators also continue to comb Monroe and follow hundreds of leads.

After extensively searching a field near the apartments and several quarries in Monroe, investigators returned to Charlotte Arms apartments and interviewed residents and guests several more times Friday.

"We had them (investigators) in our apartment about three of four times. Once it was at three in the morning. They woke us up and scared us," said Charlotte Arms apartment resident Tina Melo-Lopez.

Jennifer Buchanan said that she wishes investigators would expand their search beyond Monroe because she thinks whoever abducted her daughter has probably left the city.

Jennifer Buchanan is pleading with the public to continue to send their tips and not give up on finding her daughter.

"I definitely would want the people to call in any little thing that may or may not be useful. I encourage them to help me to find my daughter as if it were their own child," she told Local 4.

Nevaeh is white, under 4 feet tall, weighs 45 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.

Jennifer Buchanan said she is holding out hope that her daughter is still alive.

"I am not going to stop believing she is alive, until I know otherwise," said Jennifer Buchanan.

That they took several bags of evidence out of his burn pit. Then they pretty much cleared out his house. Took his computer, a ton of porn pictures of kids, and several other things. Also said his girlfriend who lives around the corner is also a registered sex offender!

The "bones" rumor has not been confirmed.  In fact, based upon follow up information developed later, no one believes it.  That rumor started really early.  Indeed, if they found bones, and believed them to be human, the coroner would have been called to retrieve them.  They would not have been disrespected by just throwing them into an evidence bag. An no coroner was ever called to the scene.

I just watched the presser.  Not much new information except that they are asking for the public's help in identifying 2 young boys, ages 7 and 10, and Dillon and Ryan, that were playing at the playground and may have seen something.  They want to interview these kids as potential witnesses. The other interesting tidbit is the lead that led to the massive search of Easter's residence. Sheriff said they dropped him off after questioning at about 5 am and, shortly thereafter, he was out burning stuff.  He said that raised a definite red flag which led to the events of yesterday.  He will be arraigned on unrelated charges today.  If I were a betting man, this sicko was burning his porn collection.  At least the info I've heard leads me in that direction.

But let me stress, no one believes the bones story.  I followed up on that last night in great detail as I found it to be disturbing. I needed to do that to clear my mind.  There is nothing to support it except for the "I heard they found bones.  . ."   People who were actually there said it never happened.
