ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A strong earthquake jolted Anchorage, Alaska, on Monday, sending people diving under desks and huddling in doorways but apparently causing no damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck about 24 miles from the town of Willow at 11:28 a.m. The epicenter was 58 miles from the state's largest city, Anchorage, where the rumbling continued for several moments.

"Things were swinging pretty good and shaking, like pictures on the wall, bottles rattling — and my blood pressure went up at least 20 points," said Pam Rannals, a bartender in Talkeetna, about 30 miles from the epicenter. "We had bears in the parking lot last night and now the earthquake. Those are the talk of the town."

She said she hadn't heard of any damage and even the liquor bottles stayed put. There also were no immediate reports of damage or injury anywhere else, but the shaking was felt over a wide swath of southcentral Alaska, the most populated region of the vast state.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center reported the magnitude at a slightly weaker 5.3 and said no tsunami was generated.

Aftershocks were shaking the area, with one about a half-hour later measuring 4.0.

Alaska is seismically active, and has frequent earthquakes. The last one that measured stronger was a 5.8 in southern Alaska on Jan. 24.

Tomorrow my hubby is going to have a procedure at the hospital. Today is prep day, so I will be a little distracted. I will also be logging off early tonight, as we have to be at the hospital at 6AM!    I am definitely not a morning person, but a monkey has to do what a monkey has to do.

If all goes well, we should be home about noon. As you all know how much of a ninny I am when it concerns hubby, it wouldn't hurt if you prayed a little for both of us. My son is taking off work to be with me so I won't be bouncing off the waiting room walls.

Thank you all for letting me know how much you care about me and the other Sacred Monkeys. I should be back into my old monkey form by tomorrow afternoon.   an angelic monkey

I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
I have to be at the hospital with my Dad at 5:00 in the morning for his eye surgery.I will leave my house at 3:30 in the morning.  I'm sure by lunch time my sister will be grating my nerves and my Mom will be passing out snacks. She is so funny.A little food fixes everything.
Sassycat has just been through test with her hubby,so she knows how you feel.Just remember we will be thinking about you.
Hopefully we will all be back in the cage tomorrow evening.   an angelic monkey

NorthernRose,I hope you will stay safe.  an angelic monkey

We can think of each other as we sit in the waiting rooms.  Monkey Devil!

I wish your mom was with us and pass out snacks. I also wish they would sedate me right along with my hubby. I don't know who these things are worse on, the patient or the family waiting. I will be praying for you and yours too.  an angelic monkey

OK back on as things seem to have settled down.  Thanks for the link CeCe.  There are a whole pile of other ones from before noon today as well.  No idea why they stuck Australia in there but under it are the rest from this morning. Something big moved the map today as they are reporting earthquakes many places today.  My dog is still nervous so I am bracing myself for more.

Northern Rose:

Glad that things have settled down somewhat for you and I hope your kids got home from school safely. It sure does look like there was a big shift somewhere. Still praying for you, and all those affected.  an angelic monkey

I use this site myself to watch the earthquakes. You can certainly see the world effects of these things.

  Hi GE

I knew I would leave someone out - that's why I hate to ever list names.    Sorry about that.  How are you doing with your sister?

Things seem to be getting better for her. We had a close call last week and almost lost her. They finally figured out what was wrong. She is now on super heavy duty antibiotics and improving. Then her daughter got so stressed out she started blacking out and had to hospitalized too! And then had to take hubs to hospital because he was having a hard time breathing. So much fun this last week.
I am ready for some laughs. Hope everyone comes back to musings soon. I take it you got your TV, Computer server box replaced after the storm last week.

Green Eyes, I didn't know about your sister. I am sorry. It seems like when it rains it pours. I know it is really tiring to be in hospitals and waiting rooms. I will pray for you and your whole family too.  an angelic monkey
