Houston man charged with killing girlfriend’s baby

A Houston man has been arrested in the beating death of his girlfriend’s 6-month old son, police said.

Gary Eugene Hullaby, 25, is charged with felony injury to a child.

Police said that Issiah Smith died from injuries he suffered while he was with Hullaby at an apartment in the 8700 block of Hammerly on Feb. 17.

Hullby was arrested at the apartment Wednesday.

Police said that Smith’s mother left her son with Hullaby at her apartment while she went to work Feb. 17.

Several hours later, Hullaby telephoned the baby’s mother and told her the boy was choking and had stopped breathing. She came home and they called 911. Paramedics took the boy to Spring Branch Medical Center. He was then flown by medical helicopter to Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died.

The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the toddler died of blunt trauma to the head and ruled his death a homicide.

Police investigators said that Hullaby had been alone with the infant for several hours before the boy stopped breathing.
