 Ocasio Searchers Scan Lake’s Bottom
Wednesday, June 09, 2010 1:09:07 PM
Too
OCOEE -- Crews searching for Tracy Ocasio spent Wednesday morning scanning the bottom of Lake Bennet, off West Colonial Drive, for any sign of what could have happened to the woman missing for over a year.

Searchers spent a lot of time around the lake over the weekend searching for signs of Ocasio, but this time, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office joined Ocoee police’s efforts.

Crews started at 7 a.m. Wednesday mapping the bottom of the lake using sonar equipment.

Looking through a viewfinder, crews could see anything on the lake’s floor.

Officials said they were trying to eliminate certain areas, and it would normally take weeks for divers to go through the entire lake.

Crews are expected to review the images taken during Wednesday’s search to see if they can explain items found at the bottom.

Officials told News 13 it was pretty easy to spot items like logs or old shopping carts in the images, but if they find something they can’t identify, divers will be sent to those specific areas.
Tracy’s mother, Liz Ocasio, said getting divers into the lake is what her husband, Joe, has been wanting for a while.

Hits by cadaver dogs over the weekend sparked Wednesday’s more extensive search of Lake Bennet.

Dive teams search Lake Bennett again for Tracy Ocasio
By Brittny Krause @ June 22, 2010 11:59 AM

Dive teams have returned to an Ocoee lake to search for a missing woman.

Orange County dive teams are searching Lake Bennett yet again for any signs of Tracy Ocasio.

The search today comes after cadaver dogs picked up a scent during a search in the area earlier this month.

Tracy Ocasio disappeared a little more than a year ago. Earlier this month dive teams mapped out Lake Bennett in hopes to find more signs of Ocasio.

During their search on June 9th, the use of boats found "what looked like a boat, a couple of logs, couple of holes and they found a couple of anomalies," said Liz Ocasio, the missing woman's mother. She said the sonar photos taken of the lake will be processed.

Last year a black boot, thought to be Tracy's, was found near the lake along State Road 50 and Bluford Road. The lake also sits between main suspect James Hataway's home and the Taproom bar in Orlando's Metro West neighborhood, the last place the 26-year-old woman was seen alive in May 2009.

Tracy's mother says finding her daughter's body will not only give her family peace, but is also a crucial step in holding Hataway responsible for her daughter's disappearance.

Hataway is awaiting trial in Seminole County in an unrelated attempted murder case involving a young woman who said she was beaten after giving him a ride home in Casselberry.

 OCOEE --

Crews have returned to Lake Bennet to continue searching for any sign of missing Ocoee woman Tracy Ocasio.

Dive teams began searching the lake weeks earlier after cadaver dogs picked up on a scent during a volunteer search.

Nothing new has been found since then.

Heavy equipment was brought out to the lake Wednesday to dig up and sift through the shore.

Ocasio was last seen in May 2009, when she gave a man a ride home from a MetroWest area bar.

The man, James Hataway, is the lone suspect in the case. He remains in jail on unrelated charges of attacking another woman.

Ocoee mother frustrated, waits for Hataway trial

Justice moves slowly for an Ocoee family whose daughter vanished over a year ago.

Elizabeth Ocasio was back in a Seminole County Courtroom Wednesday where James Hataway (pictured) was present for a hearing in an unrelated attempted murder case.

"Just knowing he's locked up helps," she told WDBO.

But she and husband Joe Ocasio are anxious to see Hataway put on trial for attempted murder of Rachel Clarke in 2008.

"It's so frustrating. The court system goes so slow," she said. No trial date has been set.

Meanwhile Ocoee police keep following tips and conducting searches, but there's still no sign of Tracy, who was last seen leaving a Metrowest bar with Hataway just over a year ago.

Only her car was ever found.

Why oh why, can't we get a law passed for the use of truth serum in cases like this.  Hataway holds the answer to where Tracy is.  He should be made to talk.

Detectives have new tip in Tracy Ocasio case, her father says
August 08, 2010|By Mark Schlueb, ORLANDO SENTINEL

A new tip in the year-old disappearance of Tracy Ocasio could lead to another search for her remains, according to her father.

Joe Ocasio said today that detectives from the Ocoee Police Department had received a tip about his daughter's disappearance during their investigation of an unrelated case.

The 27-year-old Ocasio vanished after watching an Orlando Magic game at the Taproom bar on Raleigh Street in Orlando's MetroWest neighborhood on May 27, 2009.
Witnesses saw her leave with James Hataway, 29, who is jailed on attempted-murder charges in an unrelated case. He has not been charged with anything related to Ocasio.

Joe Ocasio said Ocoee police told him they plan to search an area of West Ocoee the week of Aug. 23, perhaps with help from search dogs. He didn't know any details of the tip, and Ocoee police could not be reached this evening.

There have been repeated searches for Ocasio since her disappearance, but police have turned up little information. Just two months ago, divers searched Ocoee's Lake Bennett but came up empty.

On Tuesday, Joe and Liz Ocasio will mark their daughter's birthday without her.

"I thought that by now time would have helped heal but unfortunately it still feels like it happened yesterday. Not knowing what happened to her, if she suffered or not and not being able to find her body to at least have some type of closure has been a living nightmare," Joe Ocasio said.

"We continue to hope and pray that one day sooner than later one of these tips will lead us to a break in her case that would help us find her and get justice."

Search planned this week for Tracy Ocasio
Ocoee police plan to search an area in west Ocoee to look for missing Tracy Ocasio

 By Bianca Prieto, Orlando Sentinel
6:18 a.m. EDT, August 23, 2010
A search is planned this week for missing Ocoee woman Tracy Ocasio.

The missing woman's parents said police plan to use search dogs in an area in west Ocoee this week to look for their daughter. A tip in an unrelated case prompted the search, said father Joe Ocasio.

"We continue to hope and pray that one day sooner than later one of these tips will lead us to a break in her case that would help us find her and get justice," Ocasio said in a recent email.

Tracy Ocasio disappeared in May 2009 after she was seen leaving a MetroWest bar with James Hataway. Ocoee police have not charged Hataway in connection to Tracy Ocasio's disappearance, but say he is the prime suspect.
Volunteers have conducted numerous searches for Tracy Ocasio since she disappeared. Most recently the Orange County Sheriff's Office dive team scoured the bottom of Lake Bennet in an effort to find the missing woman.

Hataway is being held without bond at the Seminole County jail while he awaits trial in an unrelated attempted-murder case.

Anyone with information about Tracy Ocasio's whereabouts can call Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered.

I always hoped that any DNA in Jennifer Kesse car would tie him to her disappearance and then let the dominoes fall to Tracy..
Maybe LE needs look look for that ..again... and again in other cases of assault or kidnap of females in the area of this crime..

Hataway attorney: Give us records from computer linked to man suspected in Ocasio disappearance
James Hataway is charged with attempted murder in an unrelated Seminole County case
 By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel
3:33 p.m. EDT, September 14, 2010
SANFORD – The lawyer for James Hataway, the man suspected in the Tracy Ocasio missing persons case in Ocoee, today tried but got nowhere in his demand for evidence collected by Ocoee police.

Hataway is a suspect in Ocasio's disappearance last year but has not been charged. He is in jail in Seminole County, though, for a similar crime: attempted murder.

He's accused of choking and trying to snap the neck of a woman with whom he'd been partying one night.

At a hearing in that case this afternoon, Hataway's attorney, Jeff Leukel, demanded that he be given any evidence collected by Ocoee police that's in the possession of Seminole prosecutors. Leukel said that includes computers Ocoee police took from the home of Hataway's father.
But Assistant State Attorney Dan Faggard said his office doesn't have the computers or any evidence from Ocoee.

"We're unaware of the status of the Ocoee police investigation," he said. "That's their business."

Ocasio was last seen leaving a Metrowest bar with Hataway in May 2009. Her car was found abandoned a few blocks from Hataway's home.

Within days, the Seminole County woman came forward and told police her story: Hataway had tried to kill her with his bare hands about a year earlier. She escaped when she began screaming, and neighbors came to see what was going on, according to authorities.

At today's hearing, Hataway's attorney asked for all recorded jailhouse phone calls, and Circuit Judge Donna McIntosh ordered prosecutors to provide them.

There was little other disputed evidence to surrender. Hataway's ring, made of steel and marked with a distinctive pattern, was found in the Seminole victim's car. But photos of it were earlier given to his attorney.

Hataway said nothing during the 40-minute hearing.

Tracy Ocasio's mother, Liz Ocasio, sat in the front row.

It's not clear when the case will be tried.

In April, Leukel, said he would file a change of venue motion because of all the publicity about the Ocasio case. That has not yet happened.
Last week, he said he may try to pick a jury first, and if a good many potential panel members say they've prejudged the case because of news accounts, then ask that the trial be moved out of Central Florida.

Rene Stutzman can be reached at rstutzman@orlandosentinel.com or 407-650-6394.

Missing Persons' Families Go Public Together
Posted: 4:23 pm EDT October 18, 2010
Updated: 6:26 pm EDT October 18, 2010

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- One man is suspected in two missing persons cases, Tracy Ocasio from Ocoee and Chris George from Apopka, but James Hataway hasn't been charged.

George's mother had never talked to the media until Monday, and nearly two years after her son's disappearance she still has no answers. She's now going public for that one tip that could bring closure to the case.

It has been nearly two years since Rachael George's son Chris vanished. His case was thrown into the spotlight 15 weeks after his disappearance when Ocasio disappeared and investigators discovered they were both last seen alive with Hataway.

"I'm really shocked that it's taken this long to determine what happened," George said.

Apopka investigators have searched eight different times in the last year acting on tips, but admit they've run out of leads. The Ocasios and Georges are now going public together in hopes of generating new leads.

"Nobody is brave enough to come forward and say anything," Liz Ocasio, Tracey's mother, said.

George says her son Chris knew a man named Paul Hutto. Hutto was Hataway's employer and WFTV learned that Ocasio had a run in with Hutto at the Tap Room three weeks before she disappeared.

An affidavit shows police wanted him for assaulting Ocasio.

Also, a recent lake search was prompted by a text that Ocasio sent to a friend the night she disappeared, just moments after video was captured at the Tap Room she texted "gone to the lake."

In both cases the victims' cars were abandoned.

George's car was found deserted along an Apopka road.

Detectives say they would have handled his case differently had they known then Hataway would be connected to another crime.

"If we were able to look down the road eight months to a year and foresee this car had any value during those times down the road, we would have processed it more extensively," said Cpt. Donald Heston, Apopka Police Department.

Chris George was known to have a drug problem and, while police maintain they conducted several extensive searches initially, they acknowledge their investigation was hindered by witnesses who were not truthful in the beginning.

"It could put us weeks and months behind in any type of case we're investigating," Heston said.

Hataway is expected to be in court next month for a hearing on unrelated charges. He's accused of trying to kill a woman in Seminole County, one year before Tracy Ocasio disappeared.

Hataway could spend life in prison if he's found guilty. His next pre-trial conference is scheduled for November 10.Copyright 2010 by wftv.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Hataway: I Wish I Would've Walked Home
New Jailhouse Calls Released In Hataway Case
POSTED: 4:51 pm EDT October 19, 2010
UPDATED: 5:16 pm EDT October 19, 2010
SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- Jailhouse calls released by the state attorney's office Tuesday shed new light on the case of a man who is accused of trying to kill one woman and is also a person of interest in the disappearance of another.

James Hataway has been locked up for more than a year, but he has kept in contact with friends and family.

In phone calls Hataway made from inside the Seminole County Jail, he claims he is a misunderstood man.

"I just wish I would've walked home," Hatway said on one of the calls.

Hataway may be referring to a night he was seen leaving an Orlando bar with now missing woman Tracy Ocasio.

Police said video surveillance shows Hatway was the last person seen with Ocasio. Hataway was named a person of interest in the woman's disappearance.

"I ain't got the eyes of a killer. I'm not, except everybody in the news is (expletive) saying I'm the most (expletive) sinister (expletive) pyscho (expletive) and they don't (expletive) know me," Hatway said on one of the calls.
Hataway expressed his fear of all the notoriety.

"Even if I get off scot free, I can't live around here cause people are going to be gunning for me," Hataway said.

Another woman, who claims Hataway tried to kill her, in the case Hataway awaiting trial for, spoke to reporters about the alleged attack.

"He came up behind me and started slamming my head on the sidewalk," the woman said. "I started screaming and he took my hand and started trying to snap my neck again."

In another call, Hataway spoke to his young daughter -- telling her he was at work, not jail.

"We've known that he had a daughter for quite a while," Liz Ocasio, Tracy Ocasio's mother said. "I hope that her would put himself in our place and imagine his daughter being missing and he would have to the decency to tell us what happened to our daughter."

At one point in the phone calls Hataway talks about a lack of TV and a lack of food in jail. He said at the time he was trading his bed and his deserts to other inmates, but he was still hungry.

New Search Starts For Ocasio, Father Says
Searchers Ready To Investigate Lead
POSTED: 9:00 am EST November 15, 2010
UPDATED: 9:25 am EST November 15, 2010

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Searchers will soon begin to follow up on a new lead in the search for Tracy Ocasio, according to the missing woman's father.
Ocasio, 29, was last seen leaving a MetroWest bar in May of 2009 with James Hataway, a suspect in the case.

"I just wish I would've walked home," Hatway said on one of the jailhouse calls released recently.

Hataway may be referring to the night he was seen with Ocasio.

Tracy's father, Joe, said the Central Florida Search and Rescue group will look in a new area Saturday after a tip to detectives.

Officials have not released the exact location of the search so that any possible evidence is not tampered with.

Another search will be held this week to locate a missing Ocoee woman.

The mother of Tracy Ocasio tells FOX 35 volunteers will be searching on Saturday for her daughter.

Ocasio disappeared May 27, 2009. Surveillance video from a Metro West bar shows her leaving the bar with James Hataway. Ocasio has not been seen since and her car was found abandoned near Hataway's home. Police say Hataway is a suspect. He has not been charged and is being held in the Seminole County jail accused of attacking another woman.

Tracy Ocasio: Family plans search for missing woman
By Amy L. Edwards, Orlando Sentinel

6:17 a.m. EST, November 15, 2010
The family of Tracy Ocasio said they are planning another search for the missing Ocoee woman on Saturday.

Ocasio disappeared in May 2009 after she was seen leaving a MetroWest bar with James Hataway, who police have said is the prime suspect in Ocasio's disappearance. Hataway has not been charged in connection to her case.

Volunteers have conducted numerous searches for Ocasio.

Ocasio's father, Joe Ocasio, said the command center for this week's search will be at Vingetti Park, 1910 Adair Street, Ocoee.

Ocasio said he is not disclosing the exact search area to avoid possible tampering.
