LONDON (AP) - She dreamed a dream—and it almost came true. Susan Boyle's reality show journey ended Saturday with a second-place finish to a dance troupe called "Diversity" on the final of the television show "Britain's Got Talent."
After the announcement, Boyle curtsied to the audience and gave them her signature hip shake.

During her finals performance, Boyle looked polished, wearing a sparkling, floor-length gown. She returned to the song that made her an Internet sensation—"I Dreamed A Dream" from "Les Miserables."

The winners earned a 100,000 pound ($159,000) prize and the chance to perform before Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Show.

I've noticed from watching the clips of this Bristish show that Smon is much more polite to everyone than he ever is here in the US.

I also think it's hard to have a talent show that encompasses different talents such as singing and dancing and try to figure out which is more talented.

Congrats to the winners!

I watched all the videos of the final, I think the dance team Diversity is talented but I also think obviously the voters were younger as a whole and if you noticed all but one of the vocalists sang more traditional songs.

So the youth has voted and I only hope that Susan finds her way to a happy ending. Her comment after her performance "I am among friends, correct?" really touched me.

CNN is running this now, golly I hope Simon Cowell will take good care of Susan. I keep wondering what tabloid sent those reporters to cause her outburst, I also can well imagine if she said "you can't speak to me that way" that they said something horrible to her.

So this is good news, we can expect to see more of Susan in the US !

Boyle backlash — but Susan set to cash in
Posted: 06:45 AM ET

London, ENGLAND (CNN) — She may have finished second in the finale of the television show “Britain’s Got Talent,” but Susan Boyle continued to make newspaper headlines in the United Kingdom Sunday.

“Boyle Backlash” said the headline in the tabloid News of the World, suggesting that the Scottish 48-year-old’s alleged “four-letter tantrum” earlier this week had influenced millions of viewers to switch their votes to dance act Diversity.

The build-up to Saturday night’s live show had been dominated by reports that Boyle lost her temper in a London hotel and had even considered pulling out of the talent show finale.

The Mail newspaper on Sunday said Boyle had been been “comforted by psychiatrists” ahead of Saturday’s show.

“They have a whole army of doctors, psychiatrists and experts all available to any contestant at any time. They have all been taking great care of Susan,” the paper quoted the show’s judge Piers Morgan as saying.

In Scotland, where crowds had gathered in Boyle’s hometown of Blackburn in anticipation of victory, celebration parties were stopped in their tracks as the result was announced.

“Nation shocked as dance act Diversity topple Scotland’s Susan Boyle,” said the headline in the Sunday Mail.

“The cheers were caught in the collective gullet… Dance troupe Diversity gatecrashed this most expectant of parties. Jaws were left agape. Tears were shed. And then the supportive chanting of ‘SuBo’ began again,” the Sunday Herald reported.

But Boyle could still be the real winner from the series which became a global hit after clips of her audition of “I Dreamed a Dream” racked up millions of hits on the video-sharing Website, YouTube.

“£6M superstar” said the Sunday Mirror, claiming that “Britain’s Got Talent” impresario Simon Cowell plans to take Boyle across the Atlantic to “conquer the U.S.”

The News of the World upped Boyle’s likely earnings on the back of the show to £8 million ($13 million).

On top of a multi-million dollar record deal and share of album sales, Boyle is also set to earn from a Hollywood movie of her rags-to-riches life, a book deal and millions more from image rights, endorsements and television appearances, the paper said.

In an interview with the News of the World, Cowell said Boyle
could be the biggest star he had ever discovered
.

“They don’t care in America whether she wins a British TV show. They care about the woman they saw singing on YouTube,” a Cowell insider also told the paper. “If anything, £8 million in her first year might be an underestimate.”

Meanwhile competition winners Diversity are also set to cash in on their success with a film deal and a possible slot supporting singer Michael Jackson when the superstar plays a series of shows in London next month, the Sunday Mirror said.

“We feel electric. Words can’t describe it. I’m genuinely shocked. We thought Susan was unstoppable – she’s an unbelievable talent,” the paper quoted the group’s choreographer, Ashley Banjo, as saying.

Susan Boyle suffers 'emotional breakdown' and is rushed to the Priory clinic
By Paul Revoir
Last updated at 1:55 AM on 01st June 2009

Britain's Got Talent runner up Susan Boyle was admitted to The Priory clinic last night suffering with exhaustion.

Police were summoned to her hotel and the singer was assessed under the Mental Health Act after she had an 'emotional breakdown' following her shock defeat in the show's final.
But, despite her distress at missing out to dance troupe Diversity, coming second was the best thing that could have happened to her, judge Piers Morgan has declared.
Exit the Teary Angel with a bouquet of broken dreams: Susan Boyle returns to her hotel after losing to Diversity in the Britain's Got Talent final

Morgan, one of Miss Boyle's biggest supporters, said a victory would have 'just carried on the mayhem' for the unworldly Scottish spinster.
But it appears that the toll of appearing on the show may have already taken an impact on Susan's health.
Yesterday afternoon show aides contacted police to say the 48-year-old was 'acting strangely' at her London hotel.
Piers said Susan was 'almost certain' to sign a record contract with Cowell

According to the Sun newspaper paramedics were then summoned and helped the 'spaced out' star through the lobby and into an ambulance just after 6pm.
A Met Police Inspector and police doctor were called to assist and she was then escorted to the private clinic.
A police spokeswoman said: 'We were called about 6pm on Sunday to a central London hotel to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act.
'Police attended at the request of ambulance personnel and the woman was taken voluntarily to a clinic. No one was arrested and there were no allegations of crime.'
A spokeswoman at the private Priory Clinic in London would not confirm or deny the star was staying at the clinic.

Producers of the show said Susan Boyle was 'exhausted and emotionally drained'.

TV company talkbackThames released a statement saying the Scottish spinster had been advised by a doctor to take time off.
It said: 'Following Saturday night's show, Susan is exhausted and emotionally drained. She has been seen by her private GP who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery.

'We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery.'
According to other reports, after her shock defeat Boyle, from Blackburn, West Lothian, ran down a corridor shouting: 'I hate this show.'
She is accused of swearing and throwing a cup of water over a floor manager who tried to calm her down.
The alleged outburst follows a last-minute backlash against Boyle, who was favourite to win the competition for some weeks.
She was accused of four-letter outbursts at her hotel and speculation grew that she would not be able to cope with the pressure of fame.

But it is estimated that she  could earn millions of pounds if she pursues a successful singing career.

Yesterday Morgan was joined by show co-presenter Anthony McPartlin who said it had been a 'blessing' Miss Boyle finished runner-up after the 'rollercoaster' of pressure she had endured.
Following her rapturously-received debut a few months ago, some sections of the studio audience turned on Miss Boyle, booing her after her performance of her signature song, I Dreamed a Dream.
Viewers were also left confused by her behaviour afterwards.
Runner up: But Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan says coming second was the best result for 'under pressure' Susan Boyle
Miss Boyle pulled up her skirt to show a bare leg and also made a chopping sign after judges commented on her performance.
Her family revealed that despite her 'gracious' behaviour in saluting Diversity as worthy winners, she was 'devastated' and 'distraught'.
Up to 19.2million viewers tuned in to ITV1 on Saturday night to see Diversity crowned as winners. They received around a quarter of the four million votes. Miss Boyle had 20 per cent.
Morgan said of the result: 'I do think it may turn out to be the best thing that happens to her, coming second. I think she has found a lot of it quite hard to deal with and I think the pressure of actually winning and living up to all that expectation would have just carried on the mayhem for her.'
He added: 'I'm only sorry that the extraordinary tidal wave of publicity she attracted meant so many people got either bored or irritated by Boyle mania and decided not to vote for her.'
The biggest winner on Saturday night, some might say, was ITV.

The 19.2million peak in ratings, during the second part of the coverage, means that 72 per cent of people watching television had tuned in.

The last time viewing figures were this high was in 2006 when the World Cup quarter final game between England and Portugal peaked at 19.7million on BBC1.
Moment in the spotlight: The judges watch Susan perform I Dreamed A Dream

However, ITV was feeling a backlash last night, with pressure from fans to introduce an age limit for contestants.
Viewers spoke out on message boards after seeing 10-year-old Hollie Steel's semi-final meltdown on Friday night, and the tears from dancer Aidan Davis, 11, on Saturday night after criticism from Simon Cowell.
Many viewers are baffled that while The X Factor has an age limit - recently raised to 16 from 14 - Britain's Got Talent has no such rules.

I think you're right, nonesy, that Susan was set up by the vicious UK tabloids.

TV watchdogs are set to investigate the treatment of Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent after a flood of complaints from viewers.
The 48-year-old singer, who has learning difficulties, was last night being treated at a private clinic after suffering an emotional breakdown in the aftermath of the show.
Nineteen million viewers watched the beginning of Miss Boyle's meltdown on Saturday night as she was beaten to first place by dance group Diversity.

Within 24 hours, police officers and TV producers had forcibly escorted her to The Priory clinic in North London.

Media regulator Ofcom is considering an investigation into whether ITV has breached the broadcasting code after viewers flooded phone lines with a 'large number of complaints'.
Section eight of the code states: 'People in a state of distress should not be put under pressure to take part in a programme or provide interviews, unless it is warranted.'
Radio phone-ins and internet chatrooms have been buzzing with claims that Miss Boyle should never have been allowed to compete in the final after a week of disturbing behaviour in the lead-up to the show.

Runner-up: But Morgan says coming second was the best result for the 'under pressure' singer
Moment in the spotlight: The judges watch Susan perform I Dreamed A Dream
Last night The Priory group's chief medical officer took the  unusual step of speaking out to criticise TV production companies responsible for making stars of ill-prepared individuals.

Professor Chris Thompson said: 'I would want to know that people being exposed to such pressures are actually looked after.
'I think I know what TV companies would say - they would say "these people are willing volunteers..."
'The fact that there is consent between the TV company and contestant does not prevent the TV company having a duty of care once that consent has been given.'

Britain's Got Talent producer Talkback Thames last night admitted that contestants are not psychologically tested. It has now said it will review this policy.
A spokesman said: 'Compared to something like Big Brother, where you are looking at people going into a house for three months, the people on Britain's Got Talent have three or four performances maximum and spend only seven to ten days in a hotel for the semi-finals and finals.
'It is a very different scenario. But because of the level of media attention and the speed with which it became a global phenomenon, we will be reviewing all of our policies in relation to psychological treatment.'

The production company said no pressure had been put on Miss Boyle to perform in the final and it had been entirely her decision.
Miss Boyle was taken to The Priory psychiatric unit in Southgate, North London, on Sunday night after breaking down at the five-star Buckingham Gate Hotel in Westminster.
She is expected to stay there until the end of the month. The bill for the £3,000-a-week treatment will be picked up by the BGT production company.

Yesterday one of the show's judges, Piers Morgan, said the singer from West Lothian has been in a 'state' all week.
'I think she was exhausted mentally, physically, emotionally and she had had no proper sleep in days and hasn't been eating,' he said.
Piers Morgan said Susan was 'exhausted mentally, physically, emotionally'
Last night Miss Boyle's closest relatives said her fears she had let people down by not winning had triggered her breakdown.
Her brother, Gerry Boyle, told the Mail she had been taken to The Priory after suffering a panic attack at her hotel on Sunday.
Mr Boyle, 55, said: 'She started feeling extremely anxious on Sunday afternoon.
'Later that day she had what you and I would call a panic attack. She has been away from home all week and was very lonely and in all honesty very homesick.'
He added: 'Susan panicked because the show had come to an end and she did not know what the future held for her. There are no contracts on the table and she hadn't spoken to Cowell properly.'
On Sunday, friends of the singer joined her in her hotel room when they became worried about her state of mind. They called the show's producers who went to the hotel before deciding to call an ambulance. There were unconfirmed reports she also collapsed.
Medical staff spent an hour talking to Miss Boyle before deciding to take her to the Priory.
The previous night she had also reportedly run down a corridor of the TV studios shouting 'I hate this show' after she came second to Diversity in the final.
Last week, she lost her composure on two other occasions: swearing as the show was aired in the bar of the hotel where she was staying and later at two members of the public who had apparently been goading her.
Her other brother John Boyle, 59, added yesterday: ''She is a very highly strung lady and she feels like she's let people down. But it is a nonsense.
He added: 'She needs a good rest and reassurance that her future is guaranteed. Six weeks ago it was a dream and it still is a dream and it's come true.'

A spokesman for Britain's Got Talent said the programme had provided extensive support to Miss Boyle.
He said she was surrounded by her choice of friends and family and production team representatives. As the final neared, a counsellor was brought in for added support.
Ofcom would not reveal how many complaints it had received about the Miss Boyle controversy last night.
But it is expected to release a general figure for complaints concerning the last week of Britain's Got Talent later today.
ITV was also unable to provide any viewer response figures when contacted.
Critics have long been concerned about the effect of reality television on contestants' mental health.
Most criticism has been levelled at Channel 4's Big Brother.
More than 54,000 complained about the treatment of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty after she was subjected to racist bullying from fellow contestants Danielle Lloyd, the late Jade Goody and Jo O'Meara on Celebrity Big Brother.
Gordon Brown's sympathy call Gordon Brown weighed in on the Susan Boyle drama
Gordon Brown weighed into the controversy surrounding Susan Boyle's mental health yesterday.
The Prime Minister took time out of his busy schedule to speak to judges Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan and ask if the singer was all right.
Appearing on GMTV yesterday, he said: 'I hope Susan Boyle is OK because she is a really, really nice person and I think she will do well.
'I spoke to Simon Cowell last night and to Piers Morgan and wanted to be sure that she was OK.'
Mr Brown admitted he had watched the Britain's Got Talent final on Saturday night.
He also praised the win of Diversity saying it was 'just an amazing success for Britain and that will go right round the world'.
The Prime Minister claimed the group's win was a sign that the electorate did not want to back the 'outrageous' policies of the BNP.
He said: 'You have got Diversity coming in - a great example of diversity in our country - who have won, and people have said the greatest act in Britain's Got Talent, and at the same time you have got a party that is practising racism.
'I really don't think that is what the British public wants to see and I have got a duty to point out to people what that party stands for.'
This is not the first time that Mr Brown has been drawn into controversy surrounding a reality TV show.
In 2007 he was visiting India when the Shilpa Shetty race row exploded on Channel 4's Big Brother. He said: 'I want Britain to be seen as a country of fairness and tolerance. Anything detracting from this I condemn.'
He also criticised the BBC and Jonathan Ross over the Andrew Sachs phone messages scandal.

Was Susan Boyle's Britain's Got Talent dream scuppered by wrong phone numbers on YouTube?
By Paul Revoir
Last updated at 5:41 PM on 03rd June 2009

Clips on YouTube displayed the WRONG telephone voting number for Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle, it has emerged.

Hundreds of fans have complained that, within moments of Miss Boyle's performance on Saturday night, YouTube was re-running clips of it carrying the wrong phone voting number for her, but not for two of her closest rivals.

Viewers believe what appeared to be a simple error could have been an attempt to get Miss Boyle's fans to vote for rival acts.
Suspense: Fans voting in the final week of Britain's Got Talent, featuring dance act Diversity and Susan Boyle (pictured above) helped ITV earn an extra £5m. There is also speculation voting was rigged
Fans revealed that the last two digits of Miss Boyle's voting number on YouTube had been changed from the correct '08' to either '07' or '09' which were the numbers for dance group Diversity and singer Shaun Smith.

'Diversity got lucky, Flawless should have won,' reveals Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan

When the final votes were cast, Diversity won with just 4.7 per cent more votes than Miss Boyle, making it possible she lost because of the irregular phone-numbers.

ITV allowed the unofficial clips to remain on YouTube to increase advertising ratings, with more than 100million across the globe logging on to watch Miss Boyle's first performance on the show.

YouTube told the Mail it has the technology to remove the clips, but ITV had not requested them taken down because of 'promotional reasons'.

The clips have since been removed. Hundreds more viewers also complained they could not get through to Miss Boyle's voting line as it was constantly engaged.

An ITV spokesman said: 'The voting lines for the finalists were clearly displayed and read out after each act had performed in the final, with further calls to action for all of the acts at four further points in the evening.

'We are satisfied viewers had ample opportunity to know which voting numbers to call. We are not responsible for any phone numbers which may have been posted on unofficial websites.'

The claims come as it emerged that ITV earned an estimated £5million extra in phone and advertising revenue from the final week of Britain's Got Talent.

Show insiders last night claimed ITV cashed in on the success of the series thanks, in part, to Saturday night's record ratings of 19million.

Sources claim ITV made about £1.5million in phone-voting alone in the week of the semi finals and final and was able to double advertising revenues for spots in the last show.

The makers of the show, Talkback Thames and SyCo, generated a similar amount from the 50p calls. A smaller amount of the cash went to charity. Next year's show could now earn around £15million extra in advertising revenues.

Susan Boyle's crisis was so predictable, says Michael Parkinson
By Paul Revoir

Critical: Sir Michael Parkinson says the exposure of the show would have difficult for anyone - let alone someone with 'obvious personal problems'

Sir Michael Parkinson has waded into the debate over Susan Boyle, saying it was 'ridiculous' to expect her to cope with the level of attention that surrounds Britain's Got Talent.

He said such exposure would have been tough for anybody, let alone someone with 'obvious personal problems'.

The chat show legend said he wondered if Miss Boyle, 48, was any happier now than she was eight weeks ago before being thrust into the international spotlight.

Politicians have already expressed fears that the church-going Scot has been exploited by TV bosses.

There are growing calls for the media regulator Ofcom to introduce rules in its broadcasting codes to ensure a wider 'duty of care' to talent show contestants.

Miss Boyle, who has learning difficulties, is being treated at a private clinic after an emotional breakdown at the end of the series.

In messages posted on his website, Sir Michael appeared critical of the way Miss Boyle had been handled.

He said: 'Susan Boyle's reaction to not winning Britain's Got Talent was predictable.

'To go from a quiet life as a church volunteer in a small town in Scotland to international fame would be tough for anyone to cope with.

'But to expect someone with her obvious personal problems to take it all in is ridiculous.

'For all the promises of fame and fortune, one wonders if Susan Boyle is happier now than she was eight weeks ago.'

Worry: The chat show host says it was 'ridiculous' to expect Susan Boyle to cope with the level of attention she received from Britain's Got Talent
In a previous posting last Thursday on his Week in Words blog, Sir Michael expressed sympathy with singer Lily Allen's criticisms of the series.

She had claimed Miss Boyle was ' overrated' and that the show was 'verging on child cruelty'.

Sir Michael said: 'Miss Allen and I are in total agreement. In my opinion Britain's Got Talent should actually be called Britain's Got Talent?'

More...Ofcom receives just 16 complaints over Britain's Got Talent final...and hardly any were over Susan Boyle treatment
Was Susan Boyle's Britain's Got Talent dream scuppered by wrong phone numbers on YouTube?
'We didn't exploit Susan Boyle,' says Amanda Holden as she defends Britain's Got Talent in US media blitz

Ofcom revealed yesterday it had received nearly 350 complaints about Friday and Saturday's coverage of Britain's Got Talent.

They included disapproval of the treatment of ten-year-old singer Hollie Steel who broke down in tears on Friday night's semi-final, as well as of Miss Boyle.

Surprisingly, some viewers complained that the child had been given a second chance to perform.

Yesterday Miss Boyle's brother said he would not be surprised if she was back in her home town of Blackburn, West Lothian, 'before the week was out' because it was 'the best place for her'.

Amanda Holden, one of the Britain's Got Talent judges, defended the programme when she appeared on Larry King's U.S. TV show yesterday.

She said Miss Boyle was a 'grown woman' and that she had 'enjoyed every second of it.'

Producers of the next series of The X Factor are looking at drafting tough rules on handling contestants. The singing talent show is due to start filming in the next few weeks and TV bosses are desperate to avoid criticism.

Tory MP Nigel Evans, who sits on the Commons culture, media and sport committee, was one of a number of politicians concerned about the exploitation of contestants.

He said: 'Clearly Miss Boyle should have been better protected and better looked after.'

An ITV spokesman said: 'Talkback Thames and Syco, the companies responsible for producing Britain's Got Talent and the X Factor, have long experience of dealing with members of the public who audition to be on entertainment shows.'

I was relieved to see this report today. I know many don't like Paula Abdul but I think she is the one judge that is a true 'caretaker' of the contestants in American Idol. Someone has to have a heart, music may well be a very tough industry as Simon always says but.........in my own experience some of the most talented people (intellect, science, technology, music, and art) are often fragile too. I'm tiring of people speculating in the media that she's daft or off her rocker for I don't think she is, however I do think she's sensitive and naive.

Susan Boyle Leaves the Hospital
By Simon Perry
Originally posted Friday June 05, 2009 09:30 AM EDT

Four days after checking herself into a London mental health center, Susan Boyle was well enough to leave, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The Scottish singing sensation, who went into the Priory Hospital Sunday evening after suffering from exhaustion, left the facility Thursday night. Insiders say she is being looked after by family and friends – and her brother confirmed the news telling PEOPLE that he hopes to speak to her late Friday.

"As far as I can tell she is absolutely fine," Gerry Boyle says. "I believe she is with the musical people at a flat in central London. The conversation has now moved on from the Priory to talk about her musical career. She is feeling much better."

Max Clifford, a rep for Britain's Got Talent figurehead Simon Cowell, also discussed her release. "She came out yesterday evening. She is going to be having discussions about her career. But they are going to see how she is and get her feeling for the way forward," he said, adding, "But it is all very gently, gently."

Clifford could not confirm reports that Cowell, whose record label Syco will likely sign Boyle if she wants to record an album, had offered her a chance to stay at his home in Barbados. But Cowell has been in contact with Boyle, 48, since she entered the Priory's north London hospital.

Promises to Keep
Meanwhile, Paula Abdul is adamant that Cowell keep his word and get Boyle a record deal. "If he doesn't live up to his promise and make sure she gets a record deal and has a great chance ... I'll kill him!" she told PEOPLE after the Cinema Society New York Screening of Hangover Thursday. "He's got a girl sitting next to him that will nail him."

And, when not threatening Cowell, Abdul remarked that Boyle's first performance brought her to tears, saying, "She's astonishing in her own way."

But why does she think Boyle cracked? "If you could only imagine to have someone plucked out of the blue, who has a magnificent talent, the whole world gets to know her through YouTube," said Abdul. "The pressure becomes overwhelming. When everyone touts you to win, and you've never experienced that before, it's overwhelming."

But, "She's fabulous, and she's going to be fine," concluded Abdul.
