The scale and speed of the dollar collapse has been spectacular. After all, something is dangerously wrong in international finance if the world’s reserve currency can lose 5 per cent of its value in a mere month.

The old Chinese curse that “may you live in interesting times” might portend the four horsemen of the apocalypse in Biblical times (North Korean nukes, swine flu, Taleban fanatics, central bankers printing money!) but “interesting times” was a licence to print money for us sterling bulls, where the cognoscenti continued to go ballistic on cable last month. Note that a 10 point move in sterling (from 1.52 to 1.62 say) means a $100,000 trading profit on a mere one million USD spot cash exposure. Yummy, Blighty boogie wonderland! Interestingly, the Euro at 1.4180 has also retraced half its trading range from 1.2330 to 1.6018 during the past year.
