Back to school safety
Keeping Nevaeh's memory alive

Updated: Sunday, 15 Aug 2010, 11:06 PM EDT
Published : Sunday, 15 Aug 2010, 11:06 PM EDT

Monroe, MI - There’s still no justice in the death of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan, but those who want that crime solved are reaching out to keep the same thing from happening to another child.

Sunday a back to school safety event was held at the Riverside Early Learning Center, where she would’ve went to school, in Monroe Michigan.

There were activities and school supplies were also available but most importantly the group, Justice for Nevaeh, wanted to make sure area children and parents were equipped with the knowledge to avoid danger.

Neveah was kidnapped and brutally murdered last year. So far no one has been charged in the case.

Sunday evening headlines from 13abc Toledo
Sunday, August 15, 2010

More than a year ago, five-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan was abducted and murdered. Today, the community came together to remember her life and to teach children how to stay safe during the upcoming school year. It was called the Nevaeh Back-to-School event, and experts were on hand to give parents advice on safety and also hand out school supplies. The group "Justice for Nevaeh" helped organize the free public event. Organizers hope to keep Neveah's case in the spotlight until her killer is caught.

Back to School Safety Event!

On Sunday, August 15, 2010, we held Nevaeh's Back to School Safety Event at the Riverside Early Learning Center in Monroe.  The event was a great success thanks to those who worked tirelessly to put it all together.  Although we were competing with the Circus and the Monroe County Jazz Festival, we had well over 100 kids, and each of them received a hand-sewn tote bag (thanks to Risa's mom!) filled with back to school supplies.  We served hotdogs, fresh-cooked sweet corn, chips, pretzels, cheetos, punch and iced tea.  But the most popular "foods" of the day--at least for the kids--were the snow cones and all-you-can-eat cotton candy!  And best of all, everything was free for everyone in attendance.

Another popular item with the kids were the boxes full of toys, games, puzzles, stuffed-animals--you name it!  Each child was given the chance to rummage through the boxes and take whatever they wanted.   Now, one would think doing something like that would be a recipe for disaster, but I'll tell you, these were some of the greatest kids we've ever had the pleasure of meeting.  Courteous, generous, sharing--they were just downright awesome kids.  And as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, I am certain that Nevaeh was looking down upon everyone, smiling ear to ear.

We will now begin planning our Second Annual Halloween Bash.  Stay tuned for the details.

Oh, and a VERY special thanks to Kim's daughter who, although just 10 years old, worked very hard right alongside us adults setting up, cleaning up and tearing down.  Talk about energy, she was incredible.  THANK YOU!

And finally, we would like to extend a VERY special thanks to WTVG ABC Toledo and WUPW Fox Toledo for covering our event live.  THANK YOU!

A new poster seeks answers to Nevaeh Buchanan's murder

MONROE, MI (WTOL) - A new poster will soon show up all over Monroe, MI, in an effort to solve the case of the murder of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

Nevaeh was abducted last year while playing outside her apartment. Her body was later found buried under concrete along the River Raisin.

Authorities have hit a dead end in their search for her killer. Websites like Justice for Nevaeh--even a Facebook page--have been set up. Still nothing. Now there's a new effort, this one involving an emotional poster.

"My message to the killer would be to take a look at the poster. Read it in the comfort of your own home," Joe Starkey of Justice for Nevaeh said.

In the poster, Nevaeh talks directly to her killer saying, "Tell me, how do you sleep at night knowing what you did to me? When you fall asleep, do you hear my heart beating? Do you hear me breathing? Giggling? Crying? You were once 5 just like me. Tell me, did I deserve this?"

Starkey says, "Think about the emotion of this poster and what this child felt. Come to grips and see if you can continue to live with yourself."

Nevaeh's words conclude: "Tell them what you did or what you know so that we all can rest in peace."

Tips about Nevaeh's disappearance continue to be accepted by calling 734-457-6713.

New push to find Nevaeh Buchanan's killer
Sunday, September 12, 2010

Five-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan was abducted and murdered over a year ago. The case remains unsolved,

The group "Justice for Nevaeh" organizes dozens of events aimed at finding the killer. Recently they launched a new campaign. "We decided that we were going to take a little bit more of an aggressive approach," said Justice for Nevaeh co-chair Joe Starkey.

"We've put together a poster which is actually Nevaeh talking. It's Nevaeh's message," Starkey explains. The message includes things like, "How do you sleep at night knowing what you did to me?" and "Did I deserve this?"

Starkey hopes such a forward approach will convince anyone with information to come forward. "We need to do something to jog people's memories. We need to do something to make people understand the case is not solved," he says.

While Justice for Nevaeh doesn't work directly with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the group passes along any information they receive to detectives. Investigators says tips still come in regarding the case, and they follow up on every one.

"It will be solved. The person who is out there, I hope they are still looking over their shoulders," says Starkey. If you have any information about the case, you can call the Justice for Nevaeh tip line at 734-419-3232.

Thanks Cookie.  Our Campaign received tremendous media attention.  In fact, we will be on the Toledo 24 morning show tomorrow.  Based on the number of hits we've received on our website and feedback from the community, Nevaeh's message is having its intended effect.  I pray to God it has the intended effect on the "right" person or persons.
