Hundreds More Say
Good-Bye to Nevaeh

MONROE, Mich. - The people of Monroe are still struggling with their great loss. Nevaeh Buchanan will be laid to rest on Saturday. For the second day, hundreds of mourners came to the Merkle Funeral Home to say their final farewells to Nevaeh. At the same time, the investigation into her murder is continuing.

"It was difficult and I knew it was going to be difficult, but seeing the casket and seeing just how small it is, it hits home," said Serena Major. She and her best friend, Kelly Metzger, are two of hundreds who searched for Nevaeh Buchanan days after she disappeared. They felt compelled to say good-bye.

"It was very emotional. They had videos and pictures playing, and you just think of all the things that she won't experience and how somebody could just rob her of that is disgusting," Major said.

"It's not even real. You can't imagine that something happened like this to a poor, innocent, little girl," Metzger said.

They share that same feeling with so many others who came to pay their respects at the funeral home. Some mourners came from as far away as Tennessee, all of them hoping someone will pay for a crime that has devastated this close-knit community.

Authorities are still sifting through close to 1,200 tips and about a thousand interviews and are still trying to figure out if there is a connection to sex offenders George Kennedy and Roy Smith, once persons of interest arrested on parole violations.

It's clear no one will come to gripes with Nevaeh's death until her killer is caught.

"I just hope whoever did this, they pay for what they did to her because they deserve the worst," said Jennifer Blanchett.

We're told the key to solving this crime may lie in the evidence collected at the scene where Nevaeh was found. Police are still waiting for DNA test results to come back. Meantime, Neveah will be laid to rest on Saturday at noon at Stewart Road Christian Ministries in Monroe.

Family, Friends Mourn at Funeral for Nevaeh

Last Update: 4:20 pm
MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Mourners gathered Saturday for the funeral of a 5-year-old Monroe girl whose disappearance brought fear to a community, then delivered grief when she was found dead.

Hundreds of people attended funeral services for Nevaeh Buchanan in Stewart Road Church of God in Monroe, 40 miles south of Detroit.

"That one little girl was so powerful, she brought the community together," said Dale Hayford, senior pastor of Crosswalk Community Church of Monroe, who along with the Rev. Sam Luke officiated at the service.

A slideshow with pictures from Nevaeh's life ran on two large screens during the service.

"Seeing a lot of the pictures from birth until she passed, it hits home," said 34-year-old Tracey Addington of Dundee, who attended the funeral and helped search for Nevaeh. " ... If you have anyone who is around that age, it's overwhelming."

Three members of VASS Majority, a local music group, performed a song written for Nevaeh with a chorus that concluded: "Because of her, we won't be the same."

"Nevaeh became every parent's or grandparent's 5-year-old," Monroe Mayor Mark Worrell told The Associated Press by phone after attending service.

Over a thousand people paid their respects to the little girl whose first name is "heaven" spelled backward during her two days of visitation Thursday and Friday.

After the funeral service that lasted just over 2 hours, family members climbed into awaiting vehicles and were escorted to nearby St. Joseph Cemetery by a hearse drawn by a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The procession included more than 100 vehicles and 60 motorcycles, paying tribute to the girl who counted a miniature motorcycle among her favorite toys.

Nevaeh disappeared from her Monroe apartment complex May 24. Hundreds of people took part in searches and vigils. Two fisherman found her body June 4 along the River Raisin in Monroe County's Raisinville Township, 35 miles south of Detroit. Cement was found on top of the body, which appeared to be buried in a shallow grave.

During the search for Nevaeh, Lori Rafter, 47, of Monroe, tied six yellow ribbons and a single white flower to her Ford Focus, signifying her hope that the girl would be found.

"Even though we found her, I couldn't bring myself to cut them off," said Rafter, who attended the funeral. "It's going to take a little bit of time for me to do that. But she'll always be in the community's heart. She's Monroe's little angel."

A task force formed to investigate Nevaeh's death has received about 1,200 tips, but no arrests have been made. The cause of death has not been determined. The task force has asked anglers to report any persons or vehicles they might have seen in the area of the river where her body was located.

Two "persons of interest" in the case await parole revocation hearings for having associated with Jennifer Buchanan, Nevaeh's mother, among other violations. The two men, George Kennedy, 39, and Roy Smith, 48, are being held in a Jackson prison. Kennedy had been a friend of Jennifer Buchanan, herself a convicted felon.

A memorial fund was established to pay for Nevaeh's funeral expenses. Money remaining in the fund will be used to help establish an endowment to pay funeral expenses for children of indigent families.

Here is the full poem:

   No Fear in Heaven
   © 2009, Ferna Lary Mills

There are so many things in life that we can't understand,
like why a tragedy like this can happen in this land.
One moment life is perfect and the next it falls apart,
leaving us with nothing but an eternally aching heart.

Our souls cry out in agony amidst the suffering and despair.
We feel the pain and tear our clothes and scream "It isn't fair!".
Spirits are now shattered. Hearts will never be the same.
We grasp at straws and seek to find the one who is to blame.

Horrific as our life now seems, one thing remains quite true.
Our little ones have now been freed to do things angels do.
They can't recall the horrors of those last days they were here.
They remember not the terror, the hurt, nor the fear.

There is no fear in Heaven. No more sorrow. Only Joy.
It's filled with joyous laughter from each little girl and boy.
We can only try to imagine, in spite of all earthly wrongs,
our little angels are learning the words to the Angel's songs.

Amidst the children's laughter and their Heavenly play,
there's also more important work going on there today.
Jesus is building mansions, never taking time to sleep,
for Reunions are being planned, yes, even as we weep.

The children gather around Him and listen to Him speak,
for He has all the answers that they curiously seek.
He tells them for a time, in Heaven, they must wait,
and then they can meet us at Heaven's pearly gate.

Thank you for all the posts about Nevaeh's funeral. It is extremely sad and touching. My mind was on her all day, along with Caylee and all the awful things happening to children and loved ones.

Jesus loves the little children, all the children in the world.
Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.

Hello everyone
I am new here and I have been watching your post for sometime waiting to get approved to come in here. I live in Michigan and I know what it is like to loose a child to a kidnapper and a murder. My little cousin was kidnapped and murdered by a sex offender 12 years ago and I was on a search team for 2 years. My cousins body was never discovered until 5 years later by a hunter walking in a field way across the state from where she lived. We had to wait 5 years to bury her. My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Nevaeh and I hope that her killer is found soon. For us it was easy to find my cousins killer. We found him 3 days after she was abducted and he admitted to it later. I guess it is harder when you don't know who did it. The fear of the unknow is worse. I know that Nevaeh is in the place that spells her name backwords and she is in the arm of God that gave her as a gift to her earthly parents. God forbid who took that childs young life. I loved that poem that was read at her funeral, that was so fitting for this day of sadness. Believe me the little things like that do help. I am also letting you all know that in earlier post it was written to write to our congress and just as I did for my cousin I will do again for Nevaeh, I will write and they will hear me. Thank You Mom of 7 beautiful children

Thank You No rose, I have been watching everyones post and I wish that this was around 12 years ago. This is so great that you all are writing about all the missing children because they shall not be forgotten. Once the excitement goes away from a child missing case then people tend to forget about it. That was my whole fight for my cousin and that is why I went to Lansing to lobby to get some laws passed against sex offenders and why they can so easily get to our kids. I think that the person that wrote the letter to the congress is on the right track. I don't really know if Nevaeh was taken by a sex offender but a sex offender was involved with the mom right?

Welcome Mommy! Yes, her mom was involved with a sex offender and was aware that he was one. ::shakes head::

I am sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Us monkeys work hard at making sure none of the missing children and adults are ever forgotten. There are many that work on matching John and Jane Does that have been found to missing persons so loved ones will have that answer they have been seeking for months and years.

There are a lot of laws on the books, The Adam Walsh Child Safety Act was passed but is not going to be enforced in most states because of lack of funding. Which is so wrong. Our children can't be put on a back burner any longer. They need to enforce and fund the laws that are out there to protect and they need to make even stricter laws when it comes to sex offenders and protecting our children. Jail sentences need to be longer and no deals, no early parole, GPS monitoring for at least 5 years or longer if deemed necessary. Just a start. imo
