Hearts break as DNA shows body is missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan

MONROE — For nearly five days, Nevaeh Buchanan’s family remained hopeful the body found along the River Raisin wasn’t that of the 5-year-old who went missing more than two weeks ago outside her North Macomb Street apartment.

That hope turned to sadness yesterday as they learned that DNA testing confirmed the child buried in a shallow grave, just inches from the river, was Nevaeh.

Family members, some of whom spoke last night outside Charlotte Arms apartments where Nevaeh lived with her mother and grandmother, said they were heartbroken. “I [would have] liked to hold her and love her to death again. She is going to be well missed by this family. I can’t say no more. It’s just killing me. My kneecaps are shaking,” said Diane Lawson, Nevaeh’s great aunt.

Michael Buchanan, the victim’s uncle, said the family has been overwhelmed by the community’s support. He thanked everyone who helped in the search or gave donations. “I feel a lot of sadness now, but at the same time, I am happy for the help that our family has gotten,” Mr. Buchanan said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office released no more information on the autopsy being performed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office in Detroit. Authorities have said the body had no signs of trauma.

Sgt. Brian Angerer said the results of the DNA testing were the only information released. The autopsy was continuing. “We are putting out the information as soon as we get it,” he said.

Nevaeh’s grandmother, Sherry Buchanan, who remained inside her apartment last night with her daughter, Jennifer Buchanan, 24, had said she wouldn’t believe the body was Nevaeh’s until she received DNA confirmation.

Ms. Lawson came out of the Buchanans’ apartment, where she had been looking at photographs of Nevaeh with the family.

The snapshots showed happier times in the Buchanans’ lives: last year’s Halloween, when Nevaeh wore a princess costume; holidays under the Christmas tree with the child opening gifts, and Nevaeh hugging a giant reindeer, one of her many stuffed toys.

“We got a lot of pictures of her.

We are in there just looking at them, trying to be cheerful,” Ms. Lawson said. “I couldn’t express how I feel right now. I can only say that deep inside, it is killing me.”

Visitors continued to leave items at a memorial under a large tree outside the apartment.

Megan Brown of Detroit dropped off a stuffed elephant alongside the other stuffed toys, candles, balloons, and flowers.

The mother of a 1-year-old girl, she said she felt bad for the Buchanans. “They have to hurt. I don’t even know [Nevaeh], and it’s hurting me,” the woman said, adding that the elephant, named Lucky, was her daughter’s favorite toy.

Ms. Lawson said the family will make funeral arrangements today with Merkle Funeral Home on North Monroe Street.

Christy Keely, 48, of Monroe went to the memorial and knelt near the tree wrapped with a yellow ribbon. “To lose a child, I don’t think I can do it,” Ms. Keely said. She went to the apartment after Bible study.

The Rev. Dale Hanford, senior pastor of Monroe Crosswalk Community Church, prayed with family members last night for more than hour in the community room at the complex. “They are very exhausted. They are very hurting right now. It has been a long 2½ weeks. The tough time is yet to come in the next three to four days.”

Mr. Hanford said the funeral is set for Saturday at Stewart Road Christian Ministries Center. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be tomorrow and Friday at the funeral home.

A Newport, Mich., man and his stepfather who were fishing on the bend of the river on Dixon Road in Raisinville Township found Nevaeh’s body about noon last Thursday. She was buried in a shallow grave and covered with cement that began crumbling when the men walked on it.

Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield had said there was “reasonable suspicion” the body was the girl’s because of the child’s age and gender, as well as clothing similar to that worn by Nevaeh when she went missing.

Two people previously identified by police as “persons of interest” in the case were moved to a state prison in Jackson recently, where a parole revocation hearing will be held in the next 45 days, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman John Cordell said. George Kennedy, 39, and Roy Lee Smith, 48, violated their parole on unrelated charges by associating with Nevaeh and her family, among other violations. Both are registered sex offenders.

The sheriff’s office, which is leading a multijurisdictional task force investigating the case, has received nearly 1,100 tips and leads, and continues to receive and act on tips.

No arrests have been made. People with information are asked to call the tip line, 734-243-7070.

Nevaeh’s case becomes top priority for crime lab
Family’s hopes vanish as test confirms worst fears
BY AMBER HUNT • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • June 9, 2009

The search for Nevaeh Buchanan officially ended Tuesday as the Michigan State Police crime lab in Northville positively identified the body found last week in a shallow grave as the missing 5-year-old Monroe girl.

DNA testing results concluded that Nevaeh indeed was found by fishermen Thursday beneath a layer of concrete along the River Raisin in Raisinville Township, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators did not release a cause of death, nor is anyone in custody. The girl disappeared May 24 from her apartment complex.

Though Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said Friday that the girl found near the river likely was Nevaeh, family members held out hope the girl might still be alive.

Cathy DeWilde, Nevaeh’s great-aunt, said the news devastated her sister Sherry Buchanan, who is Nevaeh’s grandmother and her legal custodian.

“I knew it, and my husband knew it, but I couldn’t get it across to my sister because she raised the baby,” said DeWilde, 55, of Monroe. “I was just praying to the Lord that they’d send someone to find the body so we could bring her home.”

The funeral at noon Saturday is open to the public at Stewart Road Christian Ministries, 1199 Stewart Road, Monroe. Visitation times have not been set, but will be Thursday and Friday at Merkle Funeral Home, 2442 N. Monroe St., Monroe.

Meanwhile, the death has earned the dubious honor of being priority No. 1 for State Police forensic analysts.

Capt. Michael Thomas, director of the State Police forensic division, said Nevaeh’s case leapfrogged thousands of others backlogged for months — hundreds of them homicides — because of its “sensitive nature.”

“There’s someone out there who might have killed a little girl,” Thomas said. “She is the top priority.”

Family members gathered Tuesday evening in the Monroe apartment where Nevaeh lived with her mother, Jennifer Buchanan, and her grandmother and legal guardian, Sherry Buchanan. Relatives said both women aren’t surprised by the identification, but they’re still heartbroken.

Diana Lawson, a great-aunt of Nevaeh and one of Sherry Buchanan’s sisters, came outside holding a stack of photographs of Nevaeh showing her at Halloween and at other moments of her young life.

“Deep inside, it’s killing me,” Lawson said as she held up a photo of Nevaeh hugging a stuffed animal. “I wish she was here to hug me instead.

“My heart’s just dying right now.”

Nevaeh disappeared May 24. Thomas said forensic analysts next will tackle evidence taken from the gravesite found by two fishermen and from Nevaeh’s body. That analysis will take weeks, he said, which he acknowledged means that thousands of other cases will be put on hold because of dwindling resources and a backlog that has packed the state’s seven crime labs with so much evidence that facilities are overflowing.

On top of the 110,000 cases the State Police handles for 650 agencies, it also is handling an estimated 20,000 cases annually out of Detroit, because the city’s crime lab shut down last year.

“Every lab in the state is behind because each is handling cases from Detroit,” Thomas said.

He said things will get worse in coming months because the labs will be shut down for six days to save the state money as part of Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s budget furlough program. Also, beginning next month, anyone arrested on suspicion of a crime will be required to submit to DNA testing under state law.

Meanwhile, two convicted sex offenders out on parole who had been labeled as people of interest in Nevaeh’s case have been sent back to prison to finish their original sentences, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections. George Kennedy, 39, and Roy Smith, 48, violated their paroles by being in contact with Jennifer Buchanan, Nevaeh’s mother, said John Cordell, a department spokesman. Neither was supposed to have contact with anyone who had children.

Thanks Northern Rose.  Maybe this country should do something about crime labs backlogged, crime labs being closed. Maybe some money should go to this perhaps?

Totally agree.  I was reading somewhere that a state was letting the inmates out faster than ever because of staff cutbacks and facilities closing.  Should anyone wonder why the crimes are more prevalent and violent?

A fund has been started at the Community Foundation of Monroe County to help pay funeral-related costs for Nevaeh Buchanan. If excess funds are collected, it will form the basis for an interest-bearing endowment to pay for future funeral costs for children of indigent families, said Kathleen Russeau, executive director.
Checks should be made payable to the Community Foundation of Monroe County, noting on the check that it is for the Nevaeh Buchanan Memorial Fund. The foundation is at 28 S. Macomb St. The phone number is 242-1976.

As a Michigander I am appalled at the lack of funding for crime labs ect. Seems it is more important to our govener to give tax breaks to casinos and work to drive business out of state by a smoking ban and other new rules. Sad that the life of a child is less important to these people than that other BS.

Whatever happened  to the $2000 collected earlier that was supposedly absconded by Shane Hinojosa's mother? Has she returned? Will she return for the memorials? Is it really true that she took it all? That could be very helpful towards funeral costs. . .

That turned out not to be true. She was asked to leave town because she was having "issues" with Jennifer. She went back to Toledo where she lived. The money was given to the reward fund started by the P.I. friend of the family Ryan Duvall.

What is being done with that community based reward fund. I am not sure.

Thank you Pink for clearing that up! I am relieved to know that it was not true. There are enough questionable  characters involved already.

Hi  NRCG - Thank you for the Welcome, that was kind of you.  I agree that this article dribbles out one tip from the thousands that LE has received.  Seems kinda wierd.

I do think that with Smith being 48, and Kennedy being 39, that doesn't exactly match the description given of the two men that this couple helped.  Seems if LE had a wrap on any forensic evidence by now, they would be releasing at least a little bit of it if it helped to ease the communities fears that the murderer(s) of a child was behind bars.

Union Denies Exploiting
Girl's Death
Updated: Wednesday, 10 Jun 2009, 7:14 PM EDT

LANSING, Mich. - The death of Nevaeh Buchanan is now a hot button issue in Lansing. Questions are being raised about the two convicted sex offenders who were close to the family and how they got out of prison in the first place. However, some believe Nevaeh's death is being exploited.

"I'm angry," said State Corrections Director Patricia Caruso. "Shame on you."

Caruso was responding to a published report in the MIRS newsletter published in Lansing suggesting a link between the Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative (MPRI) and the death of the Buchanan girl.

UAW Local 6000 contends there are flaws in the MPRI system that could lead to crimes.

Director Caruso was asked "So, you believe the union is trying to use this issue, this little girl's death, to advance their union agenda?" She responded, "I'm ashamed to even say that because I would hate to think that anyone affiliated with our department in any way would do that, but it appears that way."

We asked union official Alan Kilar of UAW 6000 if they were trying to exploit this little girl's death. He responded, "No. We're not asking for more agents. We're asking for more services for our community there. For our members. ... We have nothing to gain by it."

Sen. Alan Cropsey chaired the hearing in which a union spokesperson said the Buchanan murder "may just be the tip of the iceberg". However, he defends the union on the linkage issue. "No, I don't think they're actually linking the two. I think they're saying there's crime that's going to be happening if we don't have better oversight. There's going to be more crime and this could be one of them," he said.

Kyle Melinn, the MIRS reporter who covered the story, confirms the union never made a direct link. He adds, "They didn't directly say MPRI created this. They did not say that."

Bottom line, Kilar says he has talked to Director Caruso and they have patched up their differences.

Community moves to new stage in dead girl's saga
By DAVID GRANT | Associated Press Writer
5:02 PM CDT, June 10, 2009
MONROE, Mich. - For the family of Nevaeh Buchanan, the prayer has changed.

When the Rev. Sam Luke first met the Buchanans, he was "standing in a room holding the hand of a grandmother and a mother who are terrified. We didn't know if she was dead or alive, so you pray that the Lord will comfort them and give them strength."

When police confirmed Tuesday that a body found along the River Raisin last week was 5-year-old Nevaeh's, Luke said, "you pray that they'll have peace."

After three weeks of painful mystery in which police scoured Monroe County's Raisinville Township, 35 miles south of Detroit, for the missing girl, the Buchanan family and the local community are turning to a new chapter: whoever might be responsible for Nevaeh's death.

"Everybody in this community has been touched by this tragedy. ... Everybody who has a child is now concerned about the safety of their child even more than they were three weeks ago," said Luke, pastor of Stewart Road Church of God.

Two "persons of interest" in the case await parole revocation hearings for having associated with Jennifer Buchanan, Nevaeh's mother, among other violations. The two men, George Kennedy, 39, and Roy Smith, 48, are being held in a Jackson prison. Kennedy had been a friend of Jennifer Buchanan, herself a convicted felon.

Diane Lawson, Nevaeh's great-aunt, once warned Kennedy, a registered sex offender released from prison in 2003 after serving time for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, that if "any harm comes to my niece I will see that he gets punished any way he can."

Monroe Mayor Mark Worrell said members of the community have expressed dismay at the circumstances surrounding Nevaeh's disappearance, including questioning the girl's supervision at the time. But he said that such conversations would not prove productive.

"You can be shocked and upset about what has occurred, but we have to keep a cool head about what we do. We have to allow the law enforcement agencies to do what they need to do to go through the right process to find who did this," Worrell said. "We have to be careful about the finger pointing, and there's a lot of that going on in the community."

In the meantime, Nevaeh's closed casket funeral will be held Saturday at Luke's church. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office released her body to the funeral home Wednesday, saying in a statement that the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Luke said he intends to make the funeral a small, intimate affair with no media access on the church grounds. The community has donated items including dresses for Nevaeh and her mother and great-aunt.

"I don't think that anybody who has been contacted has said no to anything," Luke said.

A memorial fund has been established to help pay for Nevaeh's funeral expenses, said Kathleen Russeau, executive director of the Community Foundation of Monroe County, which is administering the fund.

Any money left over in the Nevaeh Buchanan Memorial Fund will be used to help establish an endowment to pay funeral expenses for children of indigent families, Russeau said.

For longtime local residents, however, the shock of the past three weeks has not worn off.

"I've lived out here 33 years and I've never heard of a kid being taken," said Robert Malek, 51. "This is the first. And hopefully it will be the last."

me too...i live in an older section of town that is beautiful...were a block away from a wonderful park.  were also a block away from the Salvation Army rescue shelter.  we were also about a mile and a half from the mens only homeless shelter until about six months ago.  I live in a fairly progressive college town that tries to be green and raise up our lowest residents.  sadly, it has also turned into a good town to be homeless in.  i'm not saying homeless people are SO's...
