Murder Victim's Mother Reveals What the Killer Told Her

Last Update: 6:46 am

SAN DIEGO - Escondido teenager Amber Dubois had nowhere to run when John Albert Gardner III pulled up beside her as she walked to school, her mother said Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Carrie McGonigle talked about her one-on-one jailhouse meeting with Gardner, in which he told her about what happened on Feb. 13, 2009.

He "told (Amber) to get in the car or it would be a lot worse for her," McGonigle said. "She had nowhere to go. She was stuck."

McGonigle said she had talked to her 14-year-old daughter about being approached by strangers in the weeks before her rape and murder. Gardner claimed he told Amber he had a knife and gun but didn't show her the weapons.

McGonigle fought to talk with Gardner last week. She confronted Gardner's mother outside the jailhouse and begged her unsuccessfully to give up her visitation so she could quiz him. It's not clear how McGonigle finally secured her visit.

Gardner, 31, was sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole for raping and murdering Amber and 17-year-old Chelsea King of Poway. King, a student athlete, was abducted Feb. 25 while on an after-school run near Lake Hodges.

Gardner spent about five years in prison for attacking another girl in 2000 at his mother's home in Rancho Bernardo. At the time, a court psychiatrist warned authorities that Gardner showed no remorse and would be a threat to society.

After being arrested for Chelsea's murder, Gardner led authorities to Amber's remains in Pala. For more than a year, Amber's family fought to keep her name in the spotlight, adamant that she would not have run away.

McGonigle said there were other details from her meeting with Gardner but she would not disclose them out of respect for Amber's father, who was not ready to hear about it.

She told GMA she was now focusing on her 7-year-old daughter, trying not to hold onto all the hate and anger she feels over her daughter's murder.

I applaud Amber's mother for doing what she did; however, I don't know that I would take the word of a serial killer about anything, esp. one day before his sentencing, I am sure he spoke with hislawyers about what to say. He could say anything as long as it did not sound like kidnapping at gunpoint. I still think he produced a weapon. The questions I would also have asked is if he took pictures e.g., with a cell phone,  and what he did with them. Which of the 11 pedos he lived next to did he talk to about Amber even if not by name. They know when someone just got "a fix". Especially his mother. The mother would know about other victims - number and the date/time his behavior peaked and subsided - at the very least. LE should find a way to put the screws to her. She's still out on the street.

What bothers me the most is that when asked about other victims (and I would put money on it there are others)  Gardner replied "Nice try". I want to know who he hung out with and who he talked to about his hits, because it's what they do.

There is A LOT to be learned from John Mark Karr and applied to the case of Gardner, as far as I am concerned, regarding pedo networks. I have always said it, and always will: it goes to the top and is covered up. The Karr case is linked with the Asimov case regarding hte larges mfr and distr of pedo porn, and Santa Rosa/Petaluma is a key center, still.

I asked one of my friends who is a detective if he thought we would ever become a help to LE concerning missing people.
He told me the most difficult thing we will run into is getting somebody with authority to listen. He said LE is inundated with all kinds of people trying to give there opinions..

That was 5 years ago during the Natalee Holloway investigation..

So True it is... Sad but True.

This is absolutely not the case IMO. Networks like this are a boon to LE, always have been. If only for the fact that pedophiles, pedo pornsters lurk on these types of nets to check out the buzz "about them" if any.  One recent case last week KENDRICK arrrested in Sacramento for arranging to have sex with and kill a 6 y.o Brazilian girl, he SET UP WEBSITES to assist families with Missing and Exploited children. I don't know if this is what sparked adding emails ID's IM and websites of RSO's to their databases, but I do know that in the Sacramento area locally "men" actually got on and expressed their dissatisfaction with that.

In fact, I hope there is permanent logging of IP addresses, and other not so well known Internet tracks visitors leave behind, even by lurkers. Nuff said.

Slain girl's mom: Killer trapped victim on street
By The Associated Press

Monday, May 17, 2010 at 10:05 a.m.

SAN DIEGO — Amber Dubois' mother says the girl's rapist and killer told her he trapped the 14-year-old in a fenced street and forced her into his car.

Carrie McGonigle, appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday, says John Gardner told her in a jailhouse meeting how he kidnapped her daughter as she walked to school in San Diego County last year.

McGonigle says Amber took a different route that day, and the Escondido street was fenced on both sides. She says Gardner told her to get into the car or it would be "a lot worse" for her. He says he had a knife and gun but didn't show them to her.

Gardner was sentenced to life in prison last week for the deaths of Amber and 17-year-old Chelsea King.

Authorities will discuss the case at a Monday news conference.

Live Video: Panel Answers Questions in Gardner Case

Members of law enforcement and related entities, who participated in the Chelsea King and Amber Dubois investigations are answering questions from the media in a forum.

On Friday afternoon, after his sentencing, Gardner spoke to investigators about other cases, according to Lt. Dennis Brugos. He did not however implicate himself in any other murders.

“We will continue to talk to him as long as we can,” said Brugos.

The department received 600 tips from all over the country that they have assigned to a team of investigators, Brugos said. They are still working to follow up on all the tips received.

Lt. Dennis Brugos with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department started Monday's panel discussion recalling the events of Feb. 26, the day after Chelsea King disappeared at Rancho Bernardo Community Park and an extensive search was launched with members of the sheriff's department, the San Diego police department and search and rescue.

A resident located a pair of underwear and a sock. One of those articles had a small amount of blood on it. The articles of clothing, which later turned out to belong to Chelsea, were brought to the lab on Friday night. They were able to create the DNA profile by Sunday morning.

On Sunday, investigators were notified that DNA found on articles of Chelsea’s clothing matched that of convicted sex offender John Gardner.

After arresting John Gardner on Feb. 28, investigators interviewed him. Gardner brought up Amber Dubois during questioning immediately after his arrest, saying something like “I suppose you’re going to blame me for the girl in Escondido as well,” according to Brugos. However, Gardner refused to admit any role in the disappearance of Chelsea King or Amber Dubois at this time.

On March 2, FBI agents found disturbed ground near Lake Hodges and discovered a shallow grave. Shortly thereafter, Sheriff Bill Gore notified the King family. Her remains were later transported to the medical examiner’s office for an exam which continued into Wednesday, March 3. Chelsea King was positively identified through fingerprints.

On March 5, homicide investigators learned Gardner, accompanied by his attorney, would lead them to Amber Dubois. Gardner directed investigators to an isolated, rural location. Gardner pointed out a specific site which he said was where he had buried Amber. Early the next morning, Amber’s remains were discovered and transported to the medical examiner’s office. She was positively identified by dental records the next day.

When investigators further searched the area where Amber's remains were discovered on Monday, March 8, evidence was recovered. Brugos described the search as "successful" but would not go into details about what was recovered.

Contrary to what Gardner said in a phone interview with a local television station, the search of Kit Carson Park on March 5 was not a ruse.

Brugos said that deputies were driving Gardner to Pala to find the area where Amber’s body was buried at the same time that Escondido police were acting on a tip that a body was spotted in a bag in the pond at the park. A body was never recovered in the search.

“We had nothing to do with Kit Carson Park,” Brugos said Monday.

“We’d never put the search and rescue folks in that kind of danger or that kind of hazard for a ruse,” Capt. Bob Benton with the Escondido police said.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis refused to comment on the cases against John Gardner, until he was sentenced and she asked other agencies to do the same.

The official response to many of the questions asked after Chelsea King's disappearance was "no comment" -- and authorities were extremely quiet about the details that led them to the discovery of Amber's Dubois' body in Pala. As well as the circumstances surrounding Amber's death.

Once Gardner was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murders of Amber Dubois and Chelsea King and for the attempted rape of Candice Moncayo, Dumanis announced investigators would address any outstanding questions.

The panel is gathered at the San Diego County Sheriff's Department headquarters on Ridgehaven Court.

Check back here for a recap of key points covered in the discussion later today.

Amber 'had nowhere to run,' mother tells ABC

SAN DIEGO — Amber Dubois was walking a different route to school when her killer pulled up and told her to get into his car “or it’d be a lot worse” for her, the teen’s mother told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Monday.

John Albert Gardner III also told the girl he had a knife and a gun, but claims he didn’t show the weapons to Amber before she climbed into the car the morning of Feb. 13, 2009, Carrie McGonigle said during the 7:30 a.m. interview.

“She was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” McGonigle said.

The national interview comes after Friday’s emotional sentencing that allowed the families of Gardner’s victims to confront him in court.

Gardner was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the rape and murder of Amber, 14, and Chelsea King, 17, of Poway.

He got a third life term for assault with the intent to rape for an attack on a jogger, Candice Moncayo, who escaped after hitting him in the nose.

McGonigle learned the details of Amber’s abduction from Gardner himself when she met with him face-to-face in jail last week, two days before his sentencing. She wanted to ask two questions: Why Amber? And how?

Gardner told her that he was driving on a main Escondido road that morning when he saw Amber walking on a side street. “She turned down a street one block over, and the street had nowhere for her to go. Both sides had fencing, one side to the back of a school and the other to a riverbed,” McGonigle said. “She had nowhere to run. She was stuck.”

McGonigle said that seeing Gardner’s tears turn to glowering anger during the sentencing was revealing, when Candice Moncayo, a jogger who elbowed him during an attack on Dec. 27, asked him how his nose was.

“Seeing that look in his eyes ... seeing his rage, I could see how a girl at 14 would be scared,” McGonigle said.

Amber's mother has waited until now to reveal some of the details of her talk with Gardner because she wanted to share them with her family members first. She said it was important to make them public to help keep other kids safe.

“Don’t let them walk alone and know the way they’re going,” she said.

Law enforcement officials are expected to answer more questions about the investigation into Gardner during a news conference later Monday morning.

Thank-you for all the updates, this just stuck with me and made me ill
McGonigle fought to talk with Gardner last week. She confronted Gardner's mother outside the jailhouse and begged her unsuccessfully to give up her visitation so she could quiz him. It's not clear how McGonigle finally secured her visit.    His mother is nothing but an ugly witch and nasty to deprive the mother, that her monster son killed, a visit to speak to him.

Ok so I am trying to figure this out. So he saw her walking down Vista then she took Broadway and off broadway she took a side street? There are no side streets off broadway, there are the parking lots to the apartments and then the bus yard Did she go through the bus depot? I cannot figure out what street has a riverbed and the back of the school except for the apartment parking lots and then the bus lot.

I am glad, but a decent human being would have allowed Carrie to go that day she confronted Garner's mother, I guess I'm expecting too much from people.

John Gardner May Be Linked to Other Crimes, Police Say

Confessed Murderer Spoke About Other Cases in Post-Sentencing Interview With Police
5.17.10
In the hours after he was sentenced to life in prison for the rapes and murders of two southern California teenagers, John Gardner told authorities there are other crimes he may have been involved with.
At a news conference today, officials from several police agencies and the district attorney's office released previously withheld information about the Gardner cases, including the DNA evidence that initially led police to arrest the 31-year-old convicted sex offender in the February murder of 17-year-old Chelsea King.

The investigation into any other crimes Gardner may have committed is ongoing. Officials declined to elaborate on what specific criminal activity he may have been involved with beyond the possibility of other assaults.

Gardner didn't implicate himself in any other murders, police said, but investigators are taking a closer look at every missing persons case in the area involving women in their teens and 20s.

A task force comprised of members of nine agencies, including the FBI, was set up after King's murder to investigate any other crimes that could be tied to Gardner. It is still active even with Gardner behind bars for life.

Police declined to reveal exactly how Gardner was able to overtake King, who was last seen jogging in a park near her home. The DNA evidence that initially linked Gardner to her murder, they said, was "body fluid" on her clothes that would normally be found during the course of a sexual assault.

King's DNA was also on the clothing, they said.

Gardner was sentenced Friday to three consecutive life sentences without parole for the rape and murders of King and 14-year-old Amber DuBois, and the attempted rape of another woman.

I think I am just worried there are other bodies buried somewhere. Amber couldn't have been the first death and then Chelsea the 2nd. The thought of another innocent girl thrown in some make shift grave turns my stomach.

I think there are more bodies too Nutt. His reaction to the question was very telling.
