San Diego Park Searched After Tip in Amber Dubois Disappearance

ESCONDIDO -- Police are searching Kit Carson Park after receiving a tip concerning a bag possibly containing hair found three months after the disappearance of Amber Dubois.

A 9-year-old and two 11-year-olds reportedly discovered the hair in the park in May of 2009.

Thursday night the children reminded their parents about seeing a "bag with what looked like hair coming out of it," Escondido police Lieutenant Craig Carter said.

Amber Dubois disappeared less than 10 miles away from the park on Feb. 13, 2009, on her way to Escondido High School.

Searchers have found a sack in the southern reaches of the park, but it's not immediately clear if it's the one in question, and detectives have yet to open it, Carter said.

The park is two miles northeast of the area where a body, believed to be that of Poway teenager Chelsea King, was found Tuesday.

Amber was last seen Feb. 13, 2009.

She was 14 years old when she left to walk to Escondido High School from her home a few blocks away.

Two witnesses said they saw her on the sidewalk just a few hundred yards from the school's main entrance, but she never made it inside.

At the time Amber disappeared, registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III, the man charged in King's murder, lived just two miles from the school in the Rock Springs East apartment complex.

I have read this thread for a very long time.  I don't contribute often but I would just like to say my thoughts and prayers are with Ambers family.  I really hope this lead doesn't turn out to be Amber...not that I don't want Amber to be found, it's just I don't want her to be found like this.   an angelic monkey

Also, I'm with you traceygirl.  I'm in Canada but i'd be willing to hop a plane to go and find out what is happening.

I am in Canada as well.  We can sit next to each other on our way to pick up Tracy.

Count me in...maybe we can get a group discount.

Registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III, the suspect in the rape and murder of Chelsea King, was contacted by Escondido police at least eight times since January 2008, far more times than usual, it was reported today.

Ok so I just had a thought, maybe I am holding on to hope, but you don't think LE is acting on this and throwing the Amber name out there so they can show everyone they are not asleep on the job? After all, they are pretty much getting a beating for their lack of attention to this case. If they are and that is what all of this is about...well actually that would be good wouldn't it? I really do want them to find Amber in some basement in Montana or where ever.

I did catch Amber's Grandmother today.  You were much gentler and kinder than I could ever be in these circumstances.  I was so happy that you spoke today and I am sure Amber is very happy as well.  I send my strength and prayers.  LE must search and do it right and expedite.  It has been a year too long.  To Grandma, let er rip!

Northern, when I sound gentle and kind it is years of legal training that you are hearing and, in fact, represents determination.  The fury for LE failures to utilize all available means to search for Amber remains intact.  Appreciation for all the prayers and support grows day by day and gives us all strength.  Thank you.  Needless to say, my love for Amber is never ending.  And, my Amber would correct you about my name...I am Grandmom, and, I surely will let er rip!

On HLN today one of the speaking heads was saying there are now 7 cases that they believe JAG could be involved in.  Did anyone else catch that?

Ouch!  "Speaking heads" is monkey for Issues?  Anyway, it was Jane Velez on HLN that held up the sign with "7" on it.

Amber's Grandmom, apparently a.k.a speaking head...and I may never hear the end of that appellation.

Ambers Grandmom, Carrie, Moe, Ampersand, family & friends, I am not very good at expressing emotions (character flaw).  Just wanted to know that you and Amber are in my thoughts and prayers, every day.  Many of us here have diligently worked to find clues to Amber's where abouts and we will not give up until Amber is home.  When watching the Olympics, I saw a special on a wolf preserve up in Vancover area.  Through tears I was hoping that Amber was somewhere watching it too.   an angelic monkey an angelic monkey

"speaking heads" refers to one of the guest commentators/specialists that they always invite to "weigh in"  aka Judge Mathis, or any of the other Lawyers that are regular talk show guests.  I would not refer to any family member as one of the speaking heads.

California park searched in 2nd missing teen case
(AP) – 36 minutes ago

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Police searched a park near San Diego on Friday in their effort to find a girl who vanished about a year ago in the same region where 17-year-old Chelsea King disappeared last week.

Investigators and a dive team focused on a wooded area of Kit Carson Park where a creek enters a pond.

News photographers were kept far away but could see investigators taking pictures of items on an evidence table.

Amber Dubois, 14, vanished while walking to Escondido High School in February 2009.

Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter said three children told their parents three months later about finding what looked like human hair in a bag in the park, but the parents didn't think it significant at the time.

King's disappearance and the discovery of a body in a grave in another park near Escondido drew a huge public outcry and renewed interest in Amber's case.

Authorities said there is a strong likelihood the body found by Lake Hodges is that of King, but an official identification won't be made immediately.

Carter said Friday a bag was found at the park, but it was not immediately opened.

Convicted sex offender John Albert Gardner III has pleaded not guilty to murdering King during a rape or attempted rape. He also was charged with assaulting a woman in December with intent to rape.

King, a student at Poway High School, was last seen alive Feb. 25. Her car was found at Rancho Bernardo Community Park.

Gardner, 30, pleaded guilty in 2000 to molesting a neighbor girl in Rancho Bernardo. He was registered as a sex offender living about 55 miles away in Lake Elsinore in Riverside County. His mother has a home in Rancho Bernardo.

Escondido, Rancho Bernardo and Poway are neighboring communities in San Diego County.

In Lake Elsinore, authorities are looking into a report in October that a 16-year-old girl fled from a man who tried to force her into a car at gunpoint. A sketch of the suspect appears similar to Gardner.

Pond Drained After Tip in Amber Dubois Disappearance

ESCONDIDO -- Police say they are draining a pond in a park north of San Diego in their efforts to find a girl who vanished about a year ago in the same area where 17-year-old Chelsea King disappeared last week.

investigators began searching Kit Carson Park after receiving a tip concerning a bag possibly containing hair found three months after the disappearance of Amber Dubois.

ESCONDIDO ---- City work crews began draining a small pond Friday night in Kit Carson Park in a renewed search for evidence in the disappearance of Amber Dubois, the 14-year-old last seen walking to Escondido High School a year ago February.

Escondido police, the FBI and divers from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department spent the day searching the pond and brushy areas behind a stand of trees in the park near the Westfield North County mall.

City public works crews also cut reeds at the pond's edges to water level.

The search was organized after the parents of three girls called police Thursday night to say the sisters had found a black plastic bag with hair in or on it at the park nine months ago, Escondido Police Department spokesman Lt. Craig Carter said.

After hearing of this week's search for another missing teen, Chelsea King, who disappeared Feb. 25 during a late-afternoon jog at Rancho Bernardo Community Park, the girls reminded their parents of their discovery.

They pointed out a bag in the same general area of the pond Thursday night, telling police it was the one they saw.

The bag had decayed and no longer contained anything, police said, except for a bit of mud.

However, police collected other bags at the pond but did not say what they contained.

About noon Friday, Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, arrived at the park and spoke with police.

Dubois said he was told that because the search area where the hair was reportedly found is near a large picnic area, a body probably would have been discovered long ago.

But the renewed search for clues about his missing daughter and a fresh spate of tips being reported to police are particularly encouraging, Dubois said.

Amber's disappearance garnered national attention, including numerous profiles on television shows.

About 72 people participated in Friday's search for evidence in Amber's case. Carter said police and crews would resume their search Saturday morning, after they drained the pond.

The pond, in the southwest corner of the park, is connected to a creek that feeds into Lake Hodges, where police discovered what they believe to be Chelsea's body in a shallow grave at the shore's edge Tuesday.

On Sunday, John Albert Gardner III, 30, a registered sex offender, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the commission of a rape or an attempted rape on Chelsea.

Gardner pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday and remains in custody without bail.

He is also charged with assault in connection with a Dec. 27 attack on another woman at Rancho Bernardo Community Park.

The victim in that incident was able to fend off her attacker.

Gardner lived in Escondido near the high school from January 2008 to January 2010.

Police said they contacted him eight times during that span and are taking a fresh look at him since his arrest Sunday.

Dubois said he hoped that if Gardner is responsible for Amber's disappearance, he would tell police.

"We hope that any crime he has committed, he would do the right thing and help that family have some closure," Dubois said. "If there are any other cases that he is involved in, he should be able to have some remorse and give that information up."

Before his arrest Sunday, the state's sex offender registry listed Gardner most recently as a Lake Elsinore-area resident.

Authorities in Riverside County are reviewing sexual assault and attempted sexual assault cases in that area to see whether Gardner matches the description in any of those incidents.

i think that is weird that two kids would find a bag with hair in it and no one else, not even a park maintenance worker would not see it. I can't even keep a water bottle on the ground when I go for a run in the park, and then come back to get the bottle and find that someone threw it out meaning it is gone. Parks are not a place to dump  trash or even a body for that matter and then expect it to be just lying there...that counts for body parts as well. ((edit - I see no reason for this line of talk/theorizing))
