King parents console family of other dead teen

ESCONDIDO, Calif.—The parents of Chelsea King are consoling the parents of another teen found dead in San Diego County.
The remains of 14-year-old Amber Dubois were found Saturday, four days after the presumed body of the 17-year-old King was discovered in a shallow grave.

King's parents issued a statement Monday saying they spoke with Amber's family and share their "indescribable grief."

Amber vanished last year while walking to Escondido High School. On Monday, the school brought in extra counselors to help students cope with news that her bones had been found.

King vanished last month after running in a wilderness park about 10 miles away from where Amber disappeared.

John Albert Gardner III is charged with murdering King and is being investigated for any links to Amber's death.

Should Repeat Sex Offenders Like John Gardener be Castrated? (Video)

I was watching "The View" this morning, which I rarely do, but Joyce Behr, enraged at  John Gardener's murder of Chelsea King, called for his castration.  I'm for it.  A repeat sex offender who has not only raped repeatedly but murdered and has an appetite for little girls in my mind, castration is too kind.

I realize the idea is power, but at least it removes a weapon from his arsenal. John Gardener III,  just murdered allegedly of course, and may be responsible for the missing Amber Dubois.  Perhaps, Joyce Behr is on to something.  Maybe faced with castration John Gardener may talk if he is involved with the missing Amber Dubois.

The image of John Gardener smiling ten years ago after raping a thirteen year old girl is enough to convince me that Joyce Behr is right at least in this case.

This guy is deserving of castration if anyone is.

The remains were found west of Pala Temecula Road, about three miles north of the historic Pala Mission — the same area where the remains of 7-year-old Leticia Hernandez were discovered 15 months after she disappeared from her Oceanside home in 1989.     I keep seeing this, I'm sorry to say that I wasn't familiar with this little girl's death. I did read this morning about it, and since nobody was arrested, is there any possibility that the same person could be involved? Just striking to me that Amber was also found in the same area. I'm sure not, just a thought.

Escondido classmates mourn Amber Dubois

Tears mingled with raindrops outside Escondido High School Monday morning as students returned for class, a day after learning classmate Amber Dubois’ remains were discovered in Pala.

Students left flowers, cards and lighted candles at a banner calling for Amber’s safe return outside the school’s gates and signed a memory book, the ink running as the sodden skies soaked the pages.

“She was just one of the sweetest people I knew,” said Hailey Kosinski, a sophomore and Amber’s friend. “It’s horrible this happened to her.”

Amber, a 14-year-old freshman, had been missing for 13 months after she vanished while walking to school in February 2009. The search for her ended Saturday, when her remains were found in a remote area of Pala, in rural North County.

“When we heard we all broke down and we cried and cried and cried,” Hailey said. Asked about her grief, Hailey, who said Amber was one of her lunchtime companions, said,” It’s something that can’t be put into words.”

The search for Amber gained momentum after Chelsea King, a 17-year-old Poway High School student, disappeared Feb. 25. Chelsea’s remains were found Tuesday in a shallow grave near Lake Hodges.

John Albert Gardner, 30, has been charged in Chelsea’s rape and killing and police are investigating whether he played any role in Amber’s disappearance.

Escondido high school district spokeswoman Karyl O’Brien said the school has brought in crisis counselors to help students in their grief. She said many teachers and staff members are also affected, and will meet after school to support each other.

She said teachers also are aware to watch for students who may need help during the day and to refer them to counselors.

Escondido High School Principal Rich Watkins said in a statement the school staff appreciated the support of the community and police in helping search for Amber over the past year. The school was a hub for search and communication efforts.

“Our hearts go out to her family and friends, and it is a loss for our school and community,” Watkins said. He also praised the Escondido police.

“They interviewed hundreds of students this school year in an effort to find Amber. They never stopped looking,” he said.

O’Brien said the school may host a vigil this evening, but plans are still tentative.

Renee Harter, a ninth-grader, said, while Amber’s discovery brings closure for her family, “We were always hoping it was going to end in good news.”

Renee said Amber’s disappearance affected students in many ways.

“I’m a little more aware now,” Renee said. “I always get a ride to school so I don’t have to worry, but it always makes you a little more alert.”

Cards left at the banner for Amber, which has now become a makeshift memorial, expressed the feelings of many.

“Dear Amber — You’re in a much better place now. May you rest in peace,” one read.

Another, addressed to her family, said, “May memories bring comfort.”

Mark Rantz, an Escondido resident and rabbinical intern, stopped at the school to say a prayer.

“I prayed the mourner’s kaddish,” said Rantz, describing it as a prayer of grief, and a prayer to celebrate the life God gave everyone.

“I can’t imagine the horror (the family’s) or the horror of the King family,” Rantz said. “We carry the kids in our heart.”

America's Most Wanted host speaks about Amber

The Amber Dubois case has received national media attention and the host of 'America's Most Wanted' believes there's a link to the Poway teen, Chelsea King, murder case.

John Walsh of 'America's Most Wanted' (AMW) believes that John Albert Gardner III, the known sex offender arrested in connection with the murder of Chelsea King, could be responsible for Amber Dubois disappearance.

The teenager from Escondido was featured on the hit TV show AMW in February 2010 and August 2009.

Walsh said, "He probably had something to do I say...he's the guy that probably took Amber Dubois."

He also said believes Gardner should have never been released from jail.

"He [Gardner] should have been stopped on the first rape that they're accusing him with. Not out there until they got little Chelsea King and murdered her so it makes people angry. It makes me angry. That's why we still try to change things," Walsh explained.

Walsh is using his television platform to push for tougher laws against sex offenders.

May not have any importance but I thought that since it is such a rural area this may be why the "tipster" was able to give the exact location of Amber. Last night I came across a San Diego county map of Pala. On the map, Arouba Rd is labeled with a location of a "Emergency Gate" where it meets the main road.

I am looking for that map again but can not seem to find it. I will keep looking.

I hope that Amber's family will also post an address for notes and cards. Maybe someone who has contact could ask?

Vigil at high school will honor Amber

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at Escondido High School for 14-year-old Amber Dubois, whose skeletal remains were found on the Pala Indian Reservation more than a year after she disappeared while walking to the school.

Escondido High Principal Rich Watkins said extra counselors would be at the school Monday to help student deal with their emotions.

"Many of our students and staff have dealing with this for the last 13 months, so this news has been difficult to hear," he said. "Amber's been lost to us, but she'll live on in the memories of our staff and students as we try to move forward in this difficult time."

The vigil at the school was set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Despite a prolonged search by law enforcement, her family and volunteers since she disappeared, Amber's body was not found until Saturday. The discovery was made in the early morning hours, in a very rugged and remote section of Pala,'' Escondido police Chief Jim Maher said at a news conference.

Pala is in northern San Diego County, about 25 miles from Escondido. Amber's body was found west of Pala Temecula Road, about three miles north of the historic Pala Mission. It was the same area where the remains of 7-year-old Leticia Hernandez was found 15 months after she disappeared from her Oceanside home in 1989, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Maher said detectives were following a lead when Amber's body was found.

The remains were identified by using dental records, Maher said. Amber's parents were notified in person by investigators Saturday night.

Maher did not take questions because of the ongoing investigation.

Because Maher did not take questions, the source of the tip or any possible role played by Gardner was unclear. But Bill Garcia, a private investigator hired by Amber's family shortly after she disappeared, told FOX5 News he was told by a person with firsthand knowledge of the case that the tip about the location did not come from Gardner.

The entire Chelsea King event emotionally pulled at somebody who had this information,'' Garcia told the newspaper. They've seen the community in a lot of pain. Someone who had been afraid to say something finally came forward.''

Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, took a moment to thank everyone in the search for Amber, especially the hundreds of volunteers who looked for the girl every weekend for much of last year.

They were the most dedicated people you could ever imagine,'' Maurice Dubois said. Without them, we couldn't have done anything.''

Investigators comb area where bones found

PALA, Calif. - A locked steel gate separates the public roadway from the area where Amber Dubois's skeletal remains were discovered Saturday in Pala. Beyond the gate is a private road where the investigation continues for any clues to who is responsible.

Investigators identified her remains Sunday afternoon in a press conference in Escondido, but wouldn't give any additional details about how they found them or what lead them in this direction.

The area that's blocked off by police tape sits on a winding road just five miles north of the Pala Casino. Sheriff's deputies at the scene described the area as a remote and desolate part in the outskirts of San Diego County.

The community has been following the missing Escondido teen's case from the day she disappeared February 13th, 2009. Some people even made their way to the crime scene.

"We want to show the area where Amber's remains were found," Stacey Humphrey said as she stood near the scene where authorities discovered the skeletal remains of Amber. "Sheriff's deputies have put up this yellow tape and it's down this private road in a rural and desolate area where Amber's skeletal remains were found."

Dave Linstrom expressed his feelings, "Ughhhh, I kinda feel sick about it you know I was just hoping she was still alive, you know you just keep it in the back of your head."

"It's good for the mom, the dad and the grandma and everybody involved to be able to put it to rest. It's terrible; but to live with the unknown I think would be worse."

The deputies at the Pala scene told Fox 5 News that they are expected to be investigating the area through Monday.
