Preparations Begin For Amber Dubois Memorial

POSTED: 3:13 pm PDT March 26, 2010
UPDATED: 3:53 pm PDT March 26, 2010

ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Escondido teen Amber Dubois was laid to rest Friday at a private service in Los Angeles, and the community will celebrate Amber's life at a public memorial on Saturday.

Amber was considered a shy girl by many. She loved books and adored animals. The day she disappeared, she was supposed to buy a lamb for the Future Farmers of America.

"She had the $200 in her pocket to buy the lamb. We got the lamb. She liked wolves, so we have a wolf here. We have a llama and a money, we have a miniature black horse … one she always wanted," said radio producer Tommy Sablan.

Sablan organized the recent run in honor of Chelsea King. He's helping the Dubois family with the memorial preparation.

"I'm just here because I have a 15-year-old daughter myself, and my heart goes out to the family of both Chelsea and Amber, because when I think of Chelsea I think of Amber, and when I think of Amber I think of Chelsea," said Sablan.

Amber had only been a student at Escondido High School for five months, and Saturday's memorial will be a chance for people to really get to know the high school freshman.

"I want everyone to come here and smile when they leave because I want them to get to know Amber, and when you get to know Amber you're going to get to know the love she had for animals and the love her family had for her," said Sablan.

Four doves will be released in memory of Amber, Chelsea, Danielle Van Dam and Polly Klaas -- all young girls who've been murdered.

Mark Klass will host the ceremony, and the family of all four girls will be in attendance.

The stadium will be filled with 1,200 blue carnations, as blue was Amber's favorite color.

Brenda Van Dam, Danielle's mother, is actually organizing much of what will be seen Saturday.

The memorial will be held at Escondido High School's football field at 1 p.m.

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — Family and friends of a girl who vanished walking to school last year will hold a memorial service at her high school in Escondido, north of San Diego.

The gathering Saturday at Escondido High School will highlight Amber Dubois' love of animals, especially wolves, her favorite.

Amber's remains were discovered March 6 in a remote area north of San Diego. She was 14 when she disappeared.

Police say 30-year-old John Albert Gardner III is a suspect in her death. Gardner has pleaded not guilty to murdering another girl, 17-year-old Chelsea King, whose body was found five days after she disappeared in a San Diego park Feb. 25.

Chelsea's parents are expected to attend Saturday's service.

A beautiful sendoff for our Angels, Amber, Chelsea, Danielle and Polly.

Years ago My personal awareness began with Polly Klass..
Today and even though the bad people still exist, Much has changed since Polly was abducted in the area of Awareness. Many people today pay attention and make action happen when a young person goes missing.
In contrast, just below our southern borders, young girls go missing all the time. That population pays little or no attention at all. I have never even seen a misssing persons search by volunteers in Mexico.
It shows me that we are ahead and leading the way for civilized society worldwide to pay attention and to get involved how ever you can.

Friends describe Amber as funny, wonderful

Michele Clock

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Family friends of Amber Dubois described the slain 14-year-old in emotional speeches as a funny, "awesomely wonderful" girl.

Lifetime friend Cody Doyle described playing Super Mario Brothers video games, riding horses and even doing archery and target practice at a the Rawhide Ranch with Dubois, who was known for her love of animals.

Breaking down in tears, the friend said, "Amber was my best friend, you will never be forgotten, I love you Amber and we will soon meet again, love Cody."

I just got back from the memorial and it was lovely. The big red flowers spelled out with Amber were just outstanding. They passed out a little 4 page brochure with a picture of a wolfe on the cover that Amber had drawn. Inside were pictures of Amber at different stages in her live.

ESCONDIDO: Hundreds remember Amber's young spirit (with photos)
Parents of slain teen, others, address large crowd

For more than a year, most of North County and beyond knew Amber Dubois only as a picture on "missing" fliers in store windows.

But on Saturday, shared remembrances introduced the spirit of the teenager ---- now said to be a victim of homicide ---- to the world.

Amber, 14, was a sweet kid who couldn't hold a tune but joyfully sang anyway, a shy animal lover who joined her high school's Future Farmers of America Club.

She played gleefully in the rain, managed to walk from class to class while reading her beloved fiction books and then, with the book on her lap, kept on reading during classroom lectures.

"She's a great kid, you know, lot of love," her mother, Carrie McGonigle, said to a crowd
