New Bedford man charged with murdering mother, former girlfriend

NEW BEDFORD -- A man has been accused of stabbing his mother and a former girlfriend to death and leaving their bodies for days in an apartment where "I [heart] you" was written on a wall in blood, according to prosecutors and court records.
It appeared that the Independence Street apartment where the macabre killings occurred had been rigged to explode. An unlit stove had been left on full blast, authorities said, and a space heater had been turned to high. Police and firefighters responded Tuesday to calls about a gas smell and found the body of the mother, Katherine Gomes, 61, lying on an air mattress with multiple stab wounds. She had been dead since Saturday, authorities said.

The body of the suspect's former girlfriend, Robyn Norma Mendes, 48, was discovered in a bedroom with blood-spattered walls where the ghastly message had been scrawled. Mendes lay in bed fully dressed with no visible wounds. After being killed on Sunday, Mendes had been dressed and makeup had been applied to her face, according to court records.

The accused killer, Gary Gomes, 35, told police after his arrest that "he was at peace with himself and that this had to happen," according to a police report filed in New Bedford District Court. Gomes pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and one count of kidnapping today when he was arraigned.....


I wanted to also mention that I found a geneology on some Lawless's that was submitted by a Fitgerald. I didn't copy the info because I didn't think it was related to the ones we are searching for and I didn't want to clutter the thread or all my notes.
 
Also if New Bedford is in Mass. then that is the same place where I found Deacon Timothy Lawless the other day...???????

Diplomatic Security Investigation Results in 112
Suspects Charged with Federal Passport Fraud
The Investigation Resulted in the Seizure of $650,000 and
the Recovery of 80 Fraudulently Issued United States Passports

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security’s San Francisco and Los Angeles Field Offices and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Sacramento Field Office announced today the results of Operation Deathmatch, the largest ever investigation into the issuance of fraudulently obtained United States passports.

Between July 2005 and August 2008, 112 individuals were charged with federal passport fraud and related offenses around the country. The government also seized three firearms, $650,000 in cash, one Mercedes automobile, and over 80 of the fraudulently obtained United States passports.

During their investigation, Diplomatic Security and FBI agents cross-matched computerized government death records with Department of State passport records. This process identified individuals who fraudulently applied for, and obtained, United States passports using birth certificates of deceased Americans.

Most of the individuals charged were arrested or surrendered themselves to federal courts. Some of the imposters remain fugitives. The passport fraud charges were filed in 23 federal judicial districts in 16 states. Federal passport offenses carry a penalty of up to 10 years confinement in federal prison.

The individuals charged included fugitives, military deserters, delinquent taxpayers, parolees, convicted felons, sex-offenders, habitual drunk drivers, and undocumented immigrants from over 20 countries. All wanted U.S. passports for the purpose of hiding from law enforcement authorities. Many of the individuals charged resided and worked in their deceased identities for decades, and in many cases their neighbors, employers, spouses and children never knew them by their true names.
