The Old Douglas Market
Larry cleaned it up and remodeled the interior and re-opened what he called the Old Douglas Market in 1976. It was an unpretentious place — a bar and restaurant where people felt comfortable and where they met friends. Food was mostly sandwiches, hamburgers, soups and what became a favorite — Portuguese beans.

Larry presided behind the bar and was assisted at times by others, including Ron Van Hagen, Dan Dodson and occasionally his brother-in-law, Fred Peters.

The Grebils sold the ODM in 1981, and Larry went on to run the Westley Hotel, Sunset Liquors and finally Ralph’s Club. He served two years on the City Council before resigning. He died in 1994.

The ODM was taken over by Don Huck and the Huck and Griffith families, who maintained the same ambiance, menu and personnel.

The Huck-Griffith families ran the ODM into the 1990s, when they sold it after Don’s wife, Geri, became seriously ill. It went downhill from there and was closed for good before the end of the decade.


As an occasional customer, I can still recall in my mind’s eye the island counter, where a group of guys would congregate nearly every day for a protracted lunch hour. With Bert Bacchetti serving as the counter "mayor," the gathering usually included Tom Albano, Dan McKenzie, Bill Jordan, Almer Gomes and others I will no doubt hear about later.

maude gilmore is with the LAWLESS ROOFING OUT OF REDDING/ OREGON

the others are with the NATIONAL ROOFING with CLL, connies sister and olson.
