Amber Alert Issued For Missing 2-Year-Old
Girl Last Seen Getting Into Black Honda In Royal Palm Beach

POSTED: 11:31 am EDT June 12, 2009
UPDATED: 1:20 pm EDT June 12, 2009

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. -- An Amber Alert has been issued for a missing 2-year-old girl last seen getting into a car in Royal Palm Beach.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Lt. Bernie Williams said Armelis Chalas was last seen getting inside a black Honda a few streets away from her home on Camellia Drive.

Williams said the girl's grandmother reported her missing at about 9:30 a.m. Her mother also lives at the residence but left about an hour earlier while the girl was still there.

"So right now we're trying to see if somehow the mother came back and picked up the child," Williams said. "We haven't been able to verify that or not."

Dozens of deputies are going door to door searching for her. Bloodhounds and a sheriff's helicopter are also involved in the search.

Williams said deputies also searched a pool in the back of the house.

"The pool was completely dirty and black, so we drained the pool to make sure she wasn't in there and she wasn't, so that's a good thing," Williams said.

She was last seen wearing a red short sleeve shirt and white diapers. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said she was last seen getting into a two-door Honda or Kia with silver rims and blacked-out windows.

Amber Alert issued for missing pigtailed girl, 2, in Royal Palm Beach

Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for a 2-1/2-year-old girl missing this morning from a Royal Palm Beach neighborhood, but said at midday her mother might have picked her up.

Thirty to 50 Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies were scouring the neighborhood for the pigtailed toddler, Armelis Chalas, spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.

She said the child was clad in a red shirt and a white diaper.

One person reported seeing her get into a black car about two blocks south of the home in the 800 block of Camellia Drive, where she lives with her mother and grandparents, Barbera said.

The home is near Royal Palm Beach and Southern boulevards.

Barbera said the girl's mother had left in a black car about an hour before the grandparents reported her missing at 10:15 a.m.

Because of that, it's possible she picked up the child.

"We can't get a hold of mom. Mom doesn't have a cellphone," Barbera said.

Authorities had encountered an abandoned pool, filled with black water, at the home, and feared the child had gone in, but a diver groped through the water and determined she was not there, Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue Capt. Don DeLucia said.

The Sheriff's Office is broadcasting recorded phone calls to homes in the neighborhood.

Authorities have asked anyone with information to call (561) 688-3400 or (561) 688-3375.
