The investigators themselves, when first confronted with the evidence that pointed to Huckaby, were inclined to look for another suspect.

"When investigators were first looking at this they went 'Huh, no way... Who did she work with?"' Sheneman said. "We got that info and said 'there's no way, that doesn't happen."'

"After this case, I'll never say never again," Sheneman said, adding that police remain confident that Huckaby acted alone.

Department of Justice data on U.S. homicides dating back more than 30 years highlight the unusual nature of this crime, said James Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University.

Of the more than 600,000 cases recorded — more than 90% of U.S. homicides since 1976 — only one comes close to the alleged circumstances of Sandra's killing, said Fox. The data did not include names and some other details; the Associated Press was unable to locate the case.

Researchers say the Huckaby case does not match the typical profile of sex crimes by females.

Women represent only 1% of all adult arrests for forcible rape and 6% of all adult arrests for other sex offenses, according to a Department of Justice report.

When they do commit sex crimes, women often are acting as accomplices to men, and their victims tend to be teenagers, said David Finkelhor, director of the University of New Hampshire Crimes against Children Research Center.

"It's very, very rare for women to molest children, and when they molest children it's very unusual for them to molest a child of this age," Finkelhor said. "It's unusual for women to kill children who are not their own."

Police have declined to publicly state where and how Sandra was killed, but they have said they do not have a motive.

"I find it really hard to speculate on the motivation," Finkelhor said.

Court documents and interviews with family members show Huckaby had a rocky personal life. She went through a divorce and bankruptcy and fought depression as she tried to hold down a job and raise a child.

In 2002, she won a restraining order against a boyfriend who had an extensive criminal record and a restraining order from a previous marriage, according to San Joaquin County court records.

She married John Huckaby in 2003, separated a year later and divorced in 2005. In divorce papers, Melissa Huckaby accused John Huckaby of child abduction, domestic violence and alcohol abuse — allegations he denied in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday.

Records show she was arrested in November and charged with burglary and petty theft from a store. The judge suspended the case and appointed a doctor to assess Huckaby's mental health. She was found competent to stand trial. In a deal with prosecutors, she pleaded no contest in January to the petty theft charge and the burglary charge was dropped.

Huckaby's attorneys could use the sheer statistical improbability of the murder case to cast doubt on the allegations, regardless of the evidence, legal experts said.

"Instinctively it doesn't feel like a good fit," said William Portanova, a Sacramento defense lawyer and a former state and federal prosecutor.

"It's an extraordinarily rare circumstance to have an adult female commit a sexual assault and murder on a female child alone," Portanova said. "So right off the bat, any attorney is going to be looking to disprove that theory."

What has stuck with me through this whole thing is and I know this because I have been through the ringer with custody disputes. A court does not simply take parental rights away or grants sole custody or supervised custody on hear say in this state, they don't. There is more to this story and I think more to John Huckaby then what it appears. JMHO

Well, he's not accused of murder and rape. Until I hear more, I will reserve judgement of him.

Here's a guess -- he was moving or had moved out of state, thus child abduction.  I too am reserving judgment until I know more.  I can accuse someone of anything.  But your point is well taken, Tracygirl.

My point is we do not know if he was or is involved in any of the craziness of this family. He deserves to be look at just as we are looking into others in this family. I am not judging him, I am raising a valid point in my opinion on whether he or his family has a backround as shady as the Lawless clan does.

from 4getUnot

I found a Timothy A Lawless with Melissa Lawless as relative on Intellius

 Timothy A Lawless
View Details
 43  Peoria, IL
Crystal Lake, IL
Metamora, IL
Timothy A Lawless
Melissa Lawless
Jane E Lawless

So I googled Timothy A Lawless and got a link to Kidsafe org.

http://www.ksrc.us/Leagues/asp/listn2.asp

If you scroll down to Timothy A Lawless it shows him a Deacon and unknown for the team he will coach or whatever.  Anyway I'm wondering if he gave false info to try to pass a background check so he could get involved with kids.????

I think its important to note you wont find anyone on record saying there is no relation....
Why if someone talked to an "official" wouldnt they be willing to be quoted?

Jess- I think you are 100% correct. I eluded to that last night. In some cases there are tons with gaps, but with same initials.. a marker for that.

After reading the San Joaquin Herald article posted on Blinks - well - I would say that was quite intriguing.  Anyway - we may have this already - but thought I would post it anyway.  A friend emailed it to me:

"Apparently before Huckaby was married, she was in Tracy and filed to obtain a temporary restraining order against Joshua Palmer.  I transcribed her account of this from a TV shot of the paper:

"April 17 Joshua Palmer arrived at my work? and Sat outside of it for over 2 1/2 hours Security cameras seen him and so we called the police
when they arrived he was sitting hiding next to my Car. He was asked to leave and I was escorted home. Incident Report is (available?)

April 18 Joshua Palmer called me on my cell phone telling me he needed to talk to me. So I went outside and he told me that he was going to make my life as miserable as ? and that he was going to kill me and a family friend Officer Dan Pasquale. He has been seen by other residents and our park manager numerous amounts of times in the middle of the night lurking around my house and the other...."

I think because Huckaby is charged with raping, kidnapping and murdering a female child, there is hardly any deep research regarding her male friends, and there are quite a few:

Christian Sinclair, 49
Johnny Huckaby (former husband)
Dan Pasquale, Tracy cop
Joshua Palmer
Fred Williams (helper, custodian at grandparents church)
David Slayter, 44

I don't mean that her male friends were involved in any child abuse, but the connections of these people to government and any criminal activity are just not explored. Also Huckaby listed herself as a "party organizer" on her website. I wish I knew of the parties she organized, if any, and whether she was employed to do so.  Must be someone in Tracy who "partied" with her or at one of her parties.  Was she an "event organizer" for businesses?  For fantasy football parties, or other fantasy sports parties related to Biosoftsports.com?  Virtual sports involved with "virtual" porn or children posing to these "virtual" events?

As you know child porn is put into all kind of images, and files and often sent peer to peer. Payment modes must also exist.  A possible way to pick up money and to share files is a firm, connected to gambling and baseball (kids love baseball) owned by Timothy John Lawless:

(I detect Lawless owns up to 9 domains, but it is necessary to pay to get detailed printouts for them like the one below and the Biosoftports is the only one I have, other than VendorConnects, Inc., with a website, under his umbrella corporation  Next Opportunity, Inc. I have also perplexed about who "J. Sickenger" is, on his reverse phone number from his verified home residence:

"About us

BioSoft Sports’ History

BioSoft Sports utilizes the principles of biorhythms, coupled with decades of research, to make accurate predictions about personal performance, team performance and the outcome of sporting events.

Building Blocks

BioSoft Sports was created from the vision and tenacity of one man: Harvey Makishima. It all began when Makishima purchased a Kosmos biorhythm calculator in 1976. By analyzing NBA games, he soon realized that biorhythms affected the way players performed during the game, which ultimately affected the team's performance and the game’s outcome. He thought that his discovery was too obvious. In order to prove that these outcomes were not a fluke, he began to track the biorhythmic sine waves of each of the players using pen and paper.

After completing research to verify his initial findings, Makishima refined his system. He discovered that certain cycles were the key components in a player's performance. He had discovered the biorhythm secret! Using this secret method of biorhythm analysis and applying specific values to each segment of the biorhythmic sine waves, he was able to determine when athletes have the greatest potential for exceptional performance as well as select winners versus the spread with incredible accuracy.

As Luck Would Have It

Makishima reasoned that if biorhythms affected a player's performance in a game, they might also affect a person's business and personal life as well. In 1986, Makishima developed an Apple Basic application that incorporated his biorhythmic analysis methods. With this new application, he continued his biorhythms research on an individual level. He poured over data, recorded highly unusual events involving luck, and tracked hundreds of people's biorhythms.

With the help of the biorhythm software and interviews with real people, he discovered that the cycles do affect individuals! Just like players in the sports arena, a person's success rate is directly related to their Biorhythmic cycles.  Extraordinarily, he found that each of us has four days when we have the most potential for highly unusual luck. Makishima realized that he could determine when these four days would occur by analyzing a person's biorhythms!

A Company Is Born

In 1995, Makishima enlisted the help of a computer scientist to refine and upgrade his application. With the upgrade, the application could be used on a home PC and could incorporate databases containing vital information about specific sports. This program became the basis for the Biorhythm Secrets family of software: TeamBios, FantasyBio, BioCalendar and several other biorhythmic analysis software, which you can use to compute your personal daily biorhythms, or the biorhythms of an entire team. Using Team Bios, Makishima computed the outcome of over 60,000 NFL and NBA games, and obtained the same exceptional results that he had derived over 32 years earlier using pen and paper! Today, BioSoft Sports incorporates Harvey Makishima's vision and the science of biorhythms into all of its products.

Online Applications Become a Reality

In 2005, Makishima created a joint venture with BioSportsPro to make online versions of his software applications available via the Internet and in mobile devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, tablet PCs and laptops. Television will also be a viable media for Biosoft Sports’ products in the near future.

Want to learn more about the History of BioRhythms?"

End."

Suspect in Sandra Cantu murder on suicide watch
April 11, 10:10 PM

Melissa Huckaby, 28, is on suicide watch at the San Joaquin County Jail said Deputy Les Garcia on Saturday.

Huckaby, a Sunday school teacher was arrested late Friday for the murder of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

Neighbors and former co-workers of Huckaby were shocked by the arrest and describe her as a quiet woman who kept to herself.

Carlos Martinez, a handyman at the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park where Huckaby lived with her two daughters and grandparents said, “They were a weird family. They didn’t speak with anyone.”

Was Melissa Huckaby Raped?
by Jennifer Wadsworth

Twenty-eight-year-old Melissa Huckaby just didn’t have it in her to rape and kill a little girl, her friends say. The single mother of a 5-year-old child loved kids. She adored her daughter. She volunteered as a Sunday-school teacher at her grandfather’s church. She watched the girl she’s accused of killing—8-year-old Sandra Cantu of Tracy, California—play with her own daughter. She professed faith in God. And she told me hours before her arrest that news of Sandra’s death saddened her deeply.

“She used to play with my daughter,” Huckaby told me on April 10, just hours before police took her in for questioning. “It’s just so sad. My daughter is so sad.”

A letter dated May 20, 1999, just weeks before Huckaby graduated, read: “I just wasn’t meant to live, I guess. No one wants me or even cares if I live or not, and I’m just in the way, anyways.”[/i]

Later that day, about 12 hours after our conversation, police arrested Huckaby after an emotional five-hour interrogation on charges that she kidnapped, raped, and murdered little Sandra. Police from the Central Valley town say Huckaby then stuffed Sandra’s tiny body into a black suitcase—clothed in the same pink Hello Kitty T-shirt and Hannah Montana flip-flops she wore the day she disappeared—and dumped it into a manure-filled dairy pond just outside of town.

As charged, the troubled young mother now faces the death penalty or life without possibility of parole. She’s due back in court on Friday for further arraignment. Her defense wants to exhume Sandra’s body to double-check the genital trauma the coroner reportedly found. (And some investigators, believing that Huckaby did not act alone, have hinted but would not confirm that there could be another arrest.)

So, if the allegations are true, what could have pushed Melissa Huckaby to such a dark place?

A few women who have known Huckaby for much of her life provided some insight last week that I think explains a lot about her. A policeman had raped her 10 years ago, she confessed to her friends. Huckaby claimed a Cypress, California, cop handcuffed the then-18-year-old, shoved her into the backseat of his car, and assaulted her. The story, corroborated separately by a few friends who knew Huckaby at different times in her life, told me they had heard this same account from her. Orange County records show that Huckaby also told her story to police, who exonerated the officer after a brief investigation and closed the case. That summer, Huckaby wore long-sleeved shirts, despite the desert heat, to cover up the self-inflicted slashes on her wrists. She tried to kill herself at least once.

A friend Huckaby met in vocational school told me last week that she remembers vividly the moment Melissa told her about the alleged rape. Huckaby’s face turned red. It wrinkled as she tried and failed to fight back tears. “It was the first time I had seen her angry,” said the friend, also a 28-year-old single mother. “That’s sort of how I knew it must be true—because she’s normally so laid-back, but this just triggered something just to talk about it.”

Even if there was no rape, some event clearly unraveled Huckaby’s senior year of high school. Her grades plummeted. She was kicked off the dance team. She told her best friend that she had a tough time getting along with her family, especially her mother. Her first serious boyfriend moved away—it broke her heart. Then her best friend moved away to college.

Huckaby continued to struggle with depression and had a tough time getting her life together after graduation, said her father, 45-year-old Brian Lawless, a church-choir singer and air-conditioning technician from Southern California. But nothing in her character or biography would suggest that she’s capable of sexual homicide, he told reporters on Easter Sunday, two days after his daughter’s arrest.

Though her father says Huckaby’s emotional troubles began soon after high school, private letters she wrote to friends suggest the earlier origin. Huckaby wrote to her best friend in her senior year at Brea-Olinda High School in Orange County that she wanted to kill herself, and that she had had those thoughts since the sixth grade. A letter dated May 20, 1999, just weeks before Huckaby graduated, read: “I just wasn’t meant to live, I guess. No one wants me or even cares if I live or not, and I’m just in the way, anyways.” If true, Huckaby’s rape story marks one of the first in a series of abusive relationships in her life. And there’s a paper trail to prove it. Public records reveal a woman who claimed abuse at the hands of an ex-boyfriend and ex-husband, who filed for bankruptcy four years out of high school, who racked up enormous medical bills and who was twice arrested for petty theft.

She skipped back and forth over the years from Northern California to Los Angeles County, near where she grew up and where her parents still live.

Huckaby eventually moved to Northern California shortly after high school and rented an apartment in Tracy, where her grandparents live and where they led a tiny fundamentalist Baptist church—the scene of Sandra Cantu’s killing.

Huckaby soon began dating a man named Josh Palmer. In 2002, she took out a restraining order against him, claiming that he stalked her and threatened to hurt her grandfather. A year later, she married Johnny Huckaby, a man two years younger than herself. She had filed for bankruptcy-court protection just eight days before the wedding. Four months later, she gave birth more than a month before her due date to her only child, daughter Madison. In 2004, the couple legally separated. They divorced in 2005 after she accused him of child abduction, alcoholism, and physical abuse—charges he denied.

Huckaby tried to make it on her own after the divorce. She lived in Los Angeles County at the time and enrolled in Bryman College, a vocational school where she studied medical billing. Friends and family said the young mother barely survived financially. She struggled to hold down a job and raise her daughter, a bright blond, blue-eyed but sickly girl.[/u]

Police arrested and jailed her in 2006 for petty theft. Shortly afterward, she moved back to Tracy with her grandparents to get her life together. Things seemed to be falling into place for a while after the move, family and friends said. She spent most of her time with her daughter. She went to church with her grandparents. But last November, she tried to steal something from the local Target store. Police arrested her and she pleaded no contest to felony burglary/robbery and misdemeanor petty theft in the same San Joaquin County Superior Court where she now stands accused of rape and murder. Her arrest for property theft coincided with the time her grandparents allowed her to teach Sunday school at their church.

Before Huckaby entered her pleas in January, two court-appointed psychiatrists examined her and deemed her fit for trial. A judge sentenced her to a three-year probation on the condition that she periodically check in with her doctor and a social worker in the mental-health court. Transcripts and court minutes indicate she had made progress since her January 9 arraignment. They show she was being treated for an undisclosed mental-health condition, but that she lived up to all the agreements of her probation. Prosecutors told her that they’d drop the charges if she completed the mental-health program, designed to keep the mentally ill out of jail or prison, to stay employed, and to prevent suicide. Her apparent progress ended on April 3, when she missed a hearing.

Farmworkers found Sandra Cantu’s body three days later, the same day Huckaby went to the hospital for what she described to me as “internal bleeding.”

When we spoke, I asked her to elaborate, but she refused.

“Did you try to kill yourself?” I asked over the phone, the day after she left the hospital intensive-care unit, where she had reportedly swallowed razor blades. I knew police had watched her for a while during her stay.

She paused.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she replied, politely, but uncomfortably. “Internal bleeding. I’m OK now.”
