Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough Recall
From article in my next post and added/edit because of importance:
The FDA also said consumers should not try to cook the dough, even though eating cooked dough would be safe, because consumers might get bacteria on their hands and on counters and other cooking surfaces.

Nestle recalls Toll House cookie dough products
June 19, 2009

NEW YORK – Food maker Nestle USA on Friday voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number of illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw.

The company said the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reported E. coli illnesses that might be related to the ingestion of raw cookie dough.

In a statement, the FDA said there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. About 25 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.

The FDA advised consumers to throw away any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their homes. Retailers, restauranteurs and employees at other food-service operations should also not sell or serve any of the products.

Nestle spokeswoman Roz O'Hearn said "this has been a very quickly moving situation," adding the company took action less than 24 hours after hearing of the problem.

O'Hearn said the company will "cooperate fully" with the FDA's investigation.

The recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

Nestle recalls Toll House cookie dough after E. coli warning

Fri Jun 19, 2009 12:15pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Nestle's U.S. baking division said on Friday that it was voluntarily recalling its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned of the risk of contamination with E. coli bacteria.

Nestle said the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were investigating reports of illnesses caused by E. coli O157:H7 in consumers who also reported having eaten raw cookie dough. E. coli can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting and diarrhea, the FDA said.

Since March, the FDA said, there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states. Twenty-five people were hospitalized, according to the FDA, and no one has died.

"We want to strongly advise consumers that raw cookie dough should not be eaten," Nestle said in a statement. "This message also appears prominently on our packaging."

Nestle said the products involved in the recall included all varieties of Nestle Toll House refrigerated Cookie Bar Dough, Cookie Dough Tub, Cookie Dough Tube, Limited Edition Cookie Dough items, Seasonal Cookie Dough and Ultimates Cookie Bar Dough.

The FDA advised consumers to throw the products away. It said cooking the dough was not recommended because consumers might get the bacteria on their hands and cooking surfaces.

Raw Cookie Dough: So Tasty, So Dangerous
Fri Jun 19, 2009 11:20am EDT
By dan.mitchell - The Big Money

It's not known for sure yet whether Nestle Toll House cookies are to blame for an outbreak of E. coli that has sickened at least 66 people in 28 states, but it seems likely. "Many" of the afflicted people had eaten raw Toll House cookie dough, according to ABC News.

Nestle has recalled the refrigerated product and warned people against eating it raw, as incredibly delicious as it might be. They shouldn't eat it cooked either, the company said, until the source of the outbreak has been discovered. Cooking would normally kill the bacteria, but, of course, Nestle is taking no chances.

The E. coli strain "has not been detected in our product," Nestle said in a statement announcing the recall. But people "who have purchased these products should not consume them. Instead, we are asking that consumers return these products to their local grocer for a full refund."

Raw cookie dough is, to many of us, tastier than the cookies themselves, but Nestle advises on its packages that people shouldn't eat it raw.

Usually, though, it's OK to do so (or at least so we thought) with one exception: homemade raw cookie dough. As the people at WiseGeek point out, the homemade stuff contains raw eggs, which can pose a real danger.

The outbreak "points to the need for better funding for health surveillance," said lawyer Bill Marler, who sues food companies for a living. Oddly quoting himself on his blog, Marler wrote that the " 'fact that this outbreak was not detected until more than sixty people were ill in 28 states is precisely why we urgently need increased funding for the agencies responsible for public health,' said Marler. 'From the CDC to state and local health agencies, many dedicated people are working hard to protect consumers from tainted food, but they just don't have enough resources to do the job we ask of them.' "

Marler also posted a list of the particular products that have been recalled.

FDA: Don’t Eat Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned consumers Friday not to eat or use any variety of prepackaged Nestle Toll House refrigerated dough because of possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination.

The FDA says consumers who have the products should throw them away.

“Cooking the dough is not recommended because consumers might get the bacteria on their hands and on other cooking surfaces,” the FDA said.

The FDA is advising retailers, restaurants and other food-service operators not to sell or serve the products that are included in Nestlé’s voluntary recall.

Since March, the FDA says there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states.

Twenty-five people were hospitalized and seven developed a severe complication called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, the FDA said.

The FDA has received no reports of deaths associated with the products.

E. coli O157:H7 causes abdominal cramping, vomiting and a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools, the FDA said.

Healthy adults generally recover within a week, but young children and the elderly are at greatest risk for developing Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, which can cause serious kidney damage and even death, the FDA said.

Anyone who has the dough and has experienced the symptoms should contact a doctor immediately.

FDA says E. coli found in Nestle sample
By LAUREN SHEPHERD, AP Business Writer Lauren Shepherd, Ap Business Writer Mon Jun 29, 5:32 pm ET
NEW YORK – The Food and Drug Administration said Monday a sample of raw cookie dough collected at a Nestle USA manufacturing plant last week has tested positive for E. coli.

Nestle voluntarily recalled all Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products made at the Danville, Va., factory earlier this month after the FDA told Nestle it suspected consumers may have been exposed to E. coli bacteria after eating the dough raw.

The FDA and the federal Centers for Disease Control have been investigating whether the cookie dough was the source of the E. coli outbreak which has sickened 69 people in 29 states, according to the latest CDC data. E. coli is a potentially deadly germ that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

The FDA says the sample of Toll House refrigerated prepackaged dough was manufactured at the plant on Feb. 10.

In a statement, Nestle said the sample that tested positive came from a 16-ounce Toll House refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough bar. The product had a "best before June 10 2009" label.

"We are very concerned about those who have become ill ... and deeply regret that this has occurred," the company said in the statement.

The company also reiterated that consumers can return the recalled products to their local grocer for a full refund.

FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek says the FDA is working with the Glendale, Calif.-based unit of Switzerland-based Nestle SA to find the source of the contamination. Nestle said it will continue to work "closely and in full cooperation" with the investigation.

Besides the Toll House products, Nestle also makes a variety of refrigerated pastas and pasta sauces at the plant.

The company shut down production in the cookie dough section of the plant when it issued the recall. That section remains closed, but the company is still manufacturing the pasta and pasta sauces in a separate section of the plant.
