Taliban threatens to kill captured US soldier
<snipped>
By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writer Amir Shah, Associated Press Writer   – 22 mins ago

KABUL – The Taliban threatened Thursday to kill a captured American soldier unless the U.S. military stops operations in two districts of southeastern Afghanistan.

The Taliban said last week they were holding the soldier, who the U.S. military earlier described as possibly being in enemy hands.

Abdullah Jalali, a spokesman for Taliban commander Mawlavi Sangin, told The Associated Press in a phone interview the soldier was healthy.

He said the soldier would be killed unless the U.S. stops airstrikes in Ghazni province's Giro district and Paktika province's Khoshamand district. Still, Jalali said the final decision about the soldier's fate will be made by Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Our Government Is Officially Insane

In the bizarre through-the-looking-glass world of Washington these days, maybe it should come as no surprise that the reaction to the failure of the stimulus bill is to call for more of the same.
<snipped>
We should know better. The new stimulus being floated has been called "Stimulus 2," but that ignores the failed Bush stimulus from last year. Of course, we most famously stimulated ourselves into oblivion back in the 1930s, when ever-bigger spending packages spiraled us deeper and deeper into the Great Depression. In May 1939 FDR's Henry Morgenthau, the Treasury Secretary, gave up on spending, saying: "We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work."

Trimm, I have a feeling he is already dead.  I say keep up the airstrikes and give em more.

Good Morning Monkeys!  an angelic monkey

Northern Rose's Rib recipe does sound yummy! I've already copied it to a word doc and I'm trying the fried zucchinni tonight for dinner.

I don't think TRIMM would fit in with the new green czar. Hannity said in the piece that he was considered a communist.   Monkey Devil!

Wow, I was not aware that there are people that have not received their tax refunds, wth, I would be royally pizzed.  I live with bs every day, I could very well be the Bullchit Czar, I like that title.    I for many years have felt that anyone could lose their home and everything, I've said to my husband that we get our boxes ready to live in, just haven't picked the place to put the boxes at. It is scary how many houses are in foreclosure around here, losing everything could happen to anyone. I have no idea what the government is doing with our money, probably pocketing it.

Anybody cooking tonight? I am hungry.  an angelic monkey I am having Ramen noodles topped with hot dogs.

German shortribs with mashed potatoes.  Easy crockpot recipe and they fall off the bone.

NR - would you mind sharing that recipe? TIA

You bet!  The original recipe had 3Tbsp of brown sugar and we found it too sweet.  You can add more sugar in the end if you want it a bit sweeter.  I have also replaced the wine with the same amount of beef stock and it works just as well.

Slow-Cooked German Short Ribs
2 tablespoons  flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 pounds beef short ribs
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 slice onion, sliced
1/2 cup dry red wine
1/2 cup chile sauce
1 tablespoons packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup water

In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons flour, salt, and pepper. Coat the short ribs with the flour mixture.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown short ribs in olive oil.
In a slow cooker, combine onions, wine, chili sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and chili powder. Mix thoroughly. Transfer the short ribs from the skillet to the slow cooker.
Cover, and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours.
Remove ribs, and turn the slow cooker control to High. Mix the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour with 1/4 cup water, and stir into the sauce. Cook for 10 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

That sounds YUMMY!!! I'm stealing it, NR, OK? I love to get good crock pot recipes! I hate to come home from work and cook, so they're great for me!

GOOD MORNING, MONKEYS!!

Getting a new recipe is not an act of stealing - it is an act of friendship.

Good Morning CBB, and Good Morning Monkeys

Good morning JSM - Good morning Trim -  Good morning Monkeys.

Northern Rose, Your short rib recipe sounds yummy.   Do you make your own chili sauce?  I don't have a crockpot  but suppose I could do it in a pressure cooker on low heat.

Our fav roast is short rib pot roast.  I can only get the cut at one chain, Metro (formerly Dominion)  It used to be an inexpensive cut, but no longer.

Hi can - I do not normally make my own chili sauce, but in a pinch ( like yesterday morning) I use 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/2tsp chili  powder and a few drops hot sauce.

I bet it would work in a pressure cooker.  I have never tried it that way but would come out just as tender.  You could always simmer on low in a covered pot on the stove as well.

I hear you about meat cuts.  I am a big fan of some strange meat cuts, pork hocks to name one.  I remember when they were really cheap, now they are insane as well.  I reserve cooking pork hocks and sauerkraut for when I know I can air out the house as hubby can not stand the smell.
