Grumbles and Fanny I have heard that also about those light bulbs, another good reason to not have them. While I'm at it, I like plastic bags, when I go to the store, I want plastic bags, I use plastic bags for many things. No, I don't want to buy fabric bags to go back and forth to the store with. I'm very set in my ways, I would like to be June Cleaver waltzing around my house in pearls, and have the small problems her and Ward had with the kids. Sounds lovely to me.

Are you sure we are not really sister????

I didn't realize the Sham Wow/nut chopper guy was in jail

Last I heard, he had bitten the tongue of a hooker down in Miami.

USAirways can breathe easier. The ME in Tampa, said no head trauma, no thrombosis from sitting, ref to Billy Mayes autopsy. Believed to be heart disease. Further testing on blood. No suggestion of drug overdose.
Thank you my news monkey Fanny. I keep getting kicked out of the cage, so keep updates coming. I like it Sotomayor was ruled against in the Supreme Court and Bernie Madoff get's 150 years in jail. The day is looking up!

And Bernie's wife says she had no clue what her husband was into. How did she think they could afford all those homes.  She had to know something was off.
I like that supreme court ruling too.
I wonder if he is going to make her uhm, lets just say step down from the nomination?

He77 no!!!! They will just bulldoze her through just like everything else this administration had done!!!
You are probably right about that Fanny. I bet she doesn't get grilled like they did Thomas and Roberts were.

Ruth Madoff is making a statement about her husband.

Best thing she should do is run like he77 from to courtroom. She is making it sound like she knew nothing about it all.....

As she goes along her merry way.....she is embarrassed.

Just a serious moment here - we had an expose program very recently on those squiggly lightbulbs, saying people have gotten serious burns by having them in their desk lamps and sitting a couple of feet away from them.  Also they give off some kind of something bad for us in any kind of use in a house and haven't passed federal health regulations. Apparently Britain is an uproar about them and is about to ban them.  I threw all of mine away after watching that program.  It's been backed up by some stuff on CBC - our stodgy proper TV channel.

If you guys are talking about CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs)  - they contain mercury.  Even though stores are collecting them to properly dispose of them, there is no procedures for proper disposal and the mercury could very well end up in our earth and ground water.  They are also a known to trigger epileptic seizures, cause dizziness and headaches  and if you break one at home DO NOT vacuum it up as it will spread the mercury onto everything.  There are actually procedures to safely clean up a broken CFL and it involves rubber gloves, mask, duct tape and double bagging. If the clean up procedures are this stringent is this really something you want in your house?  Especially if you have pets?  New Zealand has recently lifted their ban on Incandescent bulbs as they realized that the very small energy saving compared to the safety risks were not presented properly.  There has also been no valid long term study conducted on the use of CFL's and any of the known side effects which include mercury contamination, ultraviolet radiation and radio frequency radiation. CFL's are energy hogs to produce so if you look at the carbon footprint of the buld from cradle to grave they actually increase the carbon foot print.  Full costs to manufacture, operate and safely dispose of a CFL have never been disclosed to the public.  This is another item ( along with antibacterial products and anything Teflon) that I will not have in my house.  I will burn candles before I buy one CFL.

Sorry for the Rant but IMO this is toxic technology that should not be in consumer hands.

What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks
Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following cleanup and disposal guidelines:

Open a window and leave the room (restrict access) for at least 15 minutes.

Remove all materials you can without using a vacuum cleaner.

Wear disposable rubber gloves, if available (do not use your bare hands).

Carefully scoop up the fragments and powder with stiff paper or cardboard.

Wipe the area clean with a damp paper towel or disposable wet wipe.

Sticky tape (such as duct tape) can be used to pick up small pieces and powder.

Place all cleanup materials in a plastic bag and seal it.

If your state permits you to put used or broken fluorescent light bulbs in the garbage, seal the bulb in two plastic bags and put into the outside trash (if no other disposal or recycling options are available).

Wash your hands after disposing of the bag.

The first time you vacuum the area where the bulb was broken, remove the vacuum bag once done cleaning the area (or empty and wipe the canister) and put the bag and/or vacuum debris, as well as the cleaning materials, in two sealed plastic bags in the outdoor trash or protected outdoor location for normal disposal.

A picture I took in my garden last year in the hopes that it brightens your day.  I find peace in this picutre.
That is beautiful Northern. I can take pictures of my plants and post them, but they are mostly dead.

There is beauty in dead flowers.  I am betting your flowers are dead from heat.    It is only 9 degrees this morning and I have  sweater on.
9 degrees in American degrees and all you have is a sweater on? Wow. My flowers are dead because of heat and lack of water. But it is a cool 79 degrees here right now.

Sorry 48 in American degrees.
Thanks. 48 american degrees JSM wears a Parka.

Move over.I use plastic bags for a lot of things too.
My husband wanted to crawl under the buggy the other day at the store when I told some of the employees what I thought about there reusable bags.

Maybe it's a good thing we all live so far apart. If we were all together we might burn a hole in the ozone or something!!!

My sister bought those recycle bags when we were in DC. I chose to carry plastic bags around. I hate this global warming, carbon footprint, killing the planet BS that is going on.

HELLO US Goverment, there are other pressing issues out there, namely IRAN and NORTH KOREA and PAKISTAN who all have are will have nukes within a year. If anything is going to kill the planet it is not my lightbulbs, but crazy dictators that will do the job first.

Hubby's daughter refuses to use the new bulbs too after hearing about the mercury.
Our Electrical Cooperative sent out free samples of the new bulbs.I don't like the idea of trying to force our hand on stuff like this.

JSM I am so sorry about ranting on your thread.  I promise not to rant about plastic bags and  all the nasties that a college of my found in reusable bags when she did random swabs of in front of a grocery store and grew cultures.  I wish the stores would go back to paper.

I am at work, but not really doing much so I think I will use a vacation day today. Just came in because it is one of my doctors at work last day today. So I just came for the party and to cry.

It's weird about mercury - I remember being given little balls of mercury to roll around in my science class. Of course I also remember when I was a young kid h aving fun X-raying my feet in a step in machine to see if my shoes fit - no wonder I look the way I do!:MonkeyDance::
