I just remember a funny story after hearing what happened to JSM's mom last night with the fireworks.

When I work as an LE dispatcher, one morning we got a massive amount of calls from residental a neighborhood out in our western section. Everyone was saying they were under attack, and could hear bomb's going off. Everyone was scrambling around until we found out the Symphony Orchestra was practicing for the Fourth of July concert in the municipal park concert shell, and the National Guard was there getting the timing right for the cannons in the "Eighteen Twelve Oveture!!" Somebody forgot to tell us!  Monkey Devil!

Thanks TRIMM!!! How did you know???? And yes, that is the guitar rip I was talking about. We used to watch a band, and the guitarist would do a flip off the stage and play that part with his teeth laying on his back on the floor. Saw him do it many, many times.

Happy 4th of July everyone. Fanny Mae your story about ex going to New York was funny. I think we all have the impression that it's a BIG Scary place. I know I always did, until a friend moved close to there for a job. When another friend and I went there to see him. We spent 3 days walking around the city site seeing. While he was in meetings. I was shocked at how safe I felt and how friendly the people were. Of course that was after 911. We went to go see the Twin Towers. All we could do was cry.  ::MonkeyWaa::People need to remember 911, but it's sad they don't.What I found funny was we were sitting in a little shop having some tea and coffee when a policeman tells us, you aren't from here you have an accent. Which I found funny because he had a very thick Brooklyn accent. I wanted to tell him it's not me with the accent. But we didn't.

Another one of my heros Lt Gen Russell Honore US Army Retired is on CNN. He was the one that patented the phrase "Don't be stuck on stupid" during his days in New Orleans after Katrina. The day the army rolled into NO it was like the Americans liberating France. By the time they allowed him to do it, it was far too late for many. A sad chapter in the history of our country.

I loved New Orleans all my life and spent much time there. It was only about a 2 1/2 drive from where I lived, and a lot of the food and culture spread across the Mississippi coast and on into Alabama and beyond. I had many happy and carefee times there. I have not been back since Katrina. I never left New Orleans that I didn't cry. Whether I was in the car, by train, bus, and believe it or not, even in my 18-wheeler. I never was ready to leave.

 Nor have I been back to the coast. Biloxi, Gulfport, Pass Christian, Gautier, Pascagoula, Waveland and many other places have be changed forever. So much rich history is gone.

My own home town took a huge lick from Katrina. But compared to the devastation west of them, they mostly quietly picked themselves up, dried and repaired everything, and hardly wimpered. It took my younger son over six months to repair after about six inches of water from the river got into his house. Amazing what six inches of water will do.   

I am feeling nostalgic today.   an angelic monkey

When I was a "paid tourist" or "steering wheel holder" I was kidded a lot about my southern accent. To some, it was stange enough to see a female driver, much less a short one with a definite southern drawl. I always told them that I thought they talked funny too. 

My ex had never really traveled, and REALLY didn't want to go, but he had too. The company put him up in the Men's Athletic Club, when Joe Namath won the Heisman Trophy. It was on display there, and was given to Joe the next day. (Roll Tide!) They took him out to dinner at Louchow's. He saw someone eating Steak Tartare (raw ground beef with raw egg on top) and almost freaked! They also said they would get him tickets to any club or show he wanted. All he wanted to do is get to the airport and get an earlier plane back home.....I would have taken full advantage of the trip. He just didn't want any part of it.

I will tell you one more story about NYC. It is a fate worse that death to an over the road truck driver going into the city. You will see drivers sitting around in a truck stop on any side of it, trying to work up nerve to go in. I have seen grown men practically cry. After I went in and took care of my load, and crossed the GWB back into New Jersey, I would feel like getting out and kissing the ground. And that's saying alot for the New Jersey Turpike.   Monkey Devil!

I will tell you one more story about NYC. It is a fate worse that death to an over the road truck driver going into the city. You will see drivers sitting around in a truck stop on any side of it, trying to work up nerve to go in. I have seen grown men practically cry. After I went in and took care of my load, and crossed the GWB back into New Jersey, I would feel like getting out and kissing the ground. And that's saying alot for the New Jersey Turpike.   Monkey Devil!

Believe me I can understand the feeling. Just walking around NY city and watching them drive, there was no way I would ever drive there.  As for the New Jersey TurnPike  The first time we flew into the airport in Newark and drove to Ramsey NJ, it only took us 4 hours Monkey Devil! I got so lost and it was raining so hard You couldn't see the front end of the car. I was cheeping along the turn pike, beacuse I was afarid where we would end up if I got off. One day while we were there my friend & I decided we would go into Newark to find an old chruch that had been started by hubbys side of the family way back in the early 1700's. Never did find it, but sure got to see a lot of the side streets of Newark. Now that was a scary place. 
I have been though all the places you mentioned in LA but never stopped.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
hen in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

I have been though all the places you mentioned in LA but never stopped. 

I once had to deliver a load of meat from Kansas to Newark, at 3AM. I was already pissy because I had just come from my sister's funeral in SC and had to fly to Amarillo, Tx to get my truck. I had missed my birthday to boot. I was sad and mad, and really not happy to be going to Newark. When I got to the neighborhood where I was going, there were no street lights, the streets were flooded, and I couldn't see the street signs. I had to get out of my truck with my heavy maglight just to see the street sign. By that time I was fearless, still angry and running on adrelin. I got to the place to deliver and went inside a barb wire fence gate with security guards. The people in the recieving office had the radio playing rock and roll, and laughing and joking. They gave me some of their cookies, and a sandwich, while they were unloading my truck. When I was finished, I didn't know where I was supposed to go next as our dispatchers weren't in the office until 8am. They showed me a place to park inside the locked gate, and woke me up at 8AM with a cup of hot coffee. I will never forget those people and how nice they were to me at a time I really needed it. Newark is a raw place and very scary, but right in the middle of it on a really bad night for me I found an oasis of kind hearted souls.  an angelic monkey

Thanks TRIMM!!! How did you know???? And yes, that is the guitar rip I was talking about. We used to watch a band, and the guitarist would do a flip off the stage and play that part with his teeth laying on his back on the floor. Saw him do it many, many times. 

Freebird and Simple Man were two of my son's favorite songs.He grew up on all the great classics I had.Those two songs  move me.
I had a feeling you were talking about Freebird earlier.

Thanks TRIMM! I feel like I am almost back in Alabama! What with talking about going out on the lake waverunning. When we would go stay at the beach, we would practically live in a bathing suit. Sometimes sleep in one too, nevermind the sand.   Monkey Devil!

I enjoyed reading your stories, and thanks for putting the Declaration of Independence up. I just got back from Walmart and Ralphs grocery store. I bit my tongue through both stores, even though there was a woman who was about 55 and heavy who wore a micro mini dress and literally flashed me and many others through both stores with her black bikini underwear. I am disgusted, we live in South Orange County which is very conservative, I don't live far from the famous Saddleback Church. One would never guess that it was the 4th of July. I had one boy that was bagging my grocerys say happy holiday to me. Nobody was dressed patriotic, but a couple people, I have a tee shirt with the flag on it, so did one or two others. I have to say this was not a good feeling.  It just felt very apathetic.

Guess what happens to hubby when he takes a nap and leaves me and the sidekick to our own devices?

We live in a small town here in Ohio, a very southern suburb of Dayton. The main streets are decorated with flags. There was a parade and an arts and craft like event this afternoon, with food vendors. They have the main streets blocked off. Usually they fly a huge American flag from a very high crane right at the main steets intersection. I haven't been up that way for a couple of days, so I am not sure they put it up this year. We are getting son ready for his trip tomorrow so we didn't go this year. Tonight, there will be a big fireworks display unless the drizzle we are getting postpones it. We can watch with the neighbors out front in the lawn chairs.

I can say this is one of the things I do like about living here. Holiday's are celebrated, and so are seasons. There is some interesting history, and historic buildings, and pride in heritage here. We often take mini-vacations and never leave the state.

I miss my red-neck Fourth of July's though. Going out on somebody's pier on the bay in the dark, shooting off bottle rockets, sometimes at each other! Carrying beer and soft drinks of all kind iced down in a galvanized tub. Singing our favorite songs along with someone's portable radio. After the kids were all tired out and tucked into bed we would sit there fighting the mosquitoes until the sun started rising over the water, talking softly and joking about life, and listening to the old war tales told by the older ones.  I told ya'll I was nostalgic today.
