A newborn baby was found stuffed in a shoebox and dumped in the lobby of a Long Island apartment building, cops said Monday.

The girl was less than a day old when she was discovered by a man who heard a noise and peeked inside a Timberland work boots box around 9 p.m. Sunday in Hempstead, L.I.

"She appears to be in good health," Nassau County Police Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said. "No one knows what could have happened to the child had it not been found quickly."

Police are hunting the mother, who will face child abandonment charges.

The infant was described as light skinned, white or Hispanic, and was dressed in a striped one-piece outfit and another yellow onesie emblazoned with the word "bounce."

She was wrapped in a blanket with elephants on it and wearing a white hat.

The umbilical cord was still attached to the baby and was tied off with dental floss.

Neighbor Elizabeth Borquez said she feels a special bond with the child because she was abandoned when she was only 7 months old and grew up in an orphanage.

"I'd rather she give me the baby . . . and let me help," said Borquez, 84. "There is a chance for a child if you go through the right channels."

Even though she dumped her daughter, the mom showed she cared about the infant by dressing her and leaving her in a spot where she would be found.

"She must have been concerned about this child," said Timothy Jaccard, a police technician. "[The baby] was left to be found. She was prepared properly."

Anyone with information should call the Nassau County Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 244-TIPS.

The police have been calling her Baby Hope.

Baby abandoned in shoebox

NASSAU COUNTY, NY: A Nassau County, New York newborn is delighting nurses and doctors a day after she was abandoned in a shoe box on the ground floor of an apartment building.

The mother will have some explaining to do, if investigators can find her.

When a resident found the infant police are calling Baby Jane dropped inside a locked lobby-they say the day-old girl had been there for about an hour.

"She appears to be in good condition. The umbilical cord was still attached. It was tied off with dental floss," said Detective Ray Cote with the Nassau County Police Department,”

Detectives are hoping somebody will recognize the outfit the baby was wearing or a blanket that was wrapped around.

What's striking says the director of New York State's Safe Haven program is that somebody seemed to want the girl to be found in good condition-but may not have realized the law provides other choices.

“You can bring a less than 5 day old child to firehouses or hospitals or police, with no questions and just walk away, said Tim Jaccard, President of the Safe Haven Alliance.

From where the baby was left there was sharp reaction from resident Betty Borquez-who herself was brought to a home for orphans at age 7 months.

“She was dumped like garbage,” said Borquez.

The baby was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center-where she's said to be doing well and nurses are calling her Jane Hope.

Police meanwhile have questions for the mother.

"There is an investigation…it's a felony…probability of an arrest is likely," said Detective Cote.

A hospital spokeswoman says Baby Jane will have to spend a few more days in intensive care.
The state safe haven director says if neither parent comes forward to try and get the child back, the road to permanent adoption could take
six months.

Here is a link to the video. The baby clothes look more like for a boy than a girl. I wonder if the mom had a boy already or just had access to baby boy clothes??

Now I know why the police were calling her baby Hope. The nurses at the hospital named her that. Jane Hope.

NY police arrest mother of abandoned baby

Associated Press - June 24, 2009 11:15 PM ET

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island have arrested the mother of a newborn found abandoned in a shoebox in the lobby of a Long island apartment building.

Nassau County Police on Wednesday charged 25-year-old Xiomara Gamez, of Hempstead, with reckless endangerment, abandonment of child, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Gamez is to be arraigned on Thursday. Police did not know if she had a lawyer.

The healthy, newborn girl was discovered by a resident on Sunday.

The Hempstead building lobby is not a safe haven. The city's safe haven law allows babies to be left within five days of birth at a police station, firehouse or hospital.

--------

I hope Baby Hope finds a new home and is not stuck in foster care while this disgusting excuse for a mother "works the system" to try and get her baby back.

I'd have more sympathy had she left Hope with a safe haven and then later changed her mind but to dump her in a random apartment lobby, stuffed in a shoe box with air holes like she was a hamster...not so much.

I wasn't sure if there was a thread for the baby found in a shoebox in NY but here's an update:

Mom Who Abandoned Baby In Shoebox Arrested
The baby appeared to be less than a day old and her umbilical cord was tied off with dental floss

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WPIX) - Bail has been set at a half a million dollars for the Long Island mom accused of abandoning her newborn in a shoebox in the lobby of a Hempstead apartment building.

Xiomara Gamez, 25, was arraigned on charges of reckless endangerment, child abandonment and child endangerment at First District Court in Hempstead. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors say Gamez has a drug addiction and has six other children who live with their father. They say she admitted to being addicted to cocaine during her latest pregnancy.

The newborn infant nicknamed "Baby Hope" by authorities was left "completely soiled" in a Timberland box on the floor of an apartment lobby at 5 Lafayette Ave. on Sunday, according to prosecutors.

Judge Robert Bruno ordered Gamez held on $500,000 bond or $250,000 cash bail as she faces charges of first-degree reckless endangerment, abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

Gamez abandoned the newborn girl, nicknamed Baby Hope, "because of her addiction" to drugs, the prosecutor said. Authorities said the newborn was in good health when she was found with her umbilical cord tied off with dental floss.

After an investigation Nassau County detectives found Gamez and arrested her Wednesday.

Gamez is set to appear back in court on Tuesday.
