I'm totally pizzed now that Fl. taxpayers are going to be footing the bill for Casey's defense. She has all these prominent lawyers on her team and we now have to pay for that??? I'm seeing red right now. Is this standard procedure to have all these types of specialty lawyers for your defense at the taxpayers expense? Anyone know?

I agree with you.  I didn't even know one could get top notch lawyers and still have the state pay for them.  I thought you had to get public defenders.  Not only do the citizens of Florida have a right to be mad about this, but just think.  All the state tax that Cindy has been paying since she lived down there will now go to her daughter's defense.  I wonder how she feels about that!  Another way Casey took money from her, huh in a backwards sort of way!

I hadn't thought of it that way. You're right.

In the Today Show segment it is also stated that if she does file for indigent status, the court will tell her defense team that any large bills incurred, will not be paid by the state. From what I have read about what these lawyers do get paid by the state to defend an indigent client, it's next to nothing. However I can see her defense team doing it just for notoriety.

Who could be the family source?

I don't know.I can't stand it when they do that.
You're right about the lawyers. They will work this case for the notoriety, and to promote their books.

I tried to answer you and I was thrown out of the cage. Let me try again.

I just went online and asked that question and they wanted to charge me money for the answer! From what I have read, the state does not pay more than $2500, but what I don't know is if that is per lawyer/expert or per case. This is not set in stone that Casey is filing for indigent status, so we will have to wait and see.  This subject came from a piece on the Today Show this morning.

Good afternoon Monkeys and Guests.  an angelic monkey

Shopping day here for us so I am behind. It is a sad anniversary for Caylee today. It is hard to believe that it is already a year since we first knew about Caylee's little life. By the time we knew, it was already too late.

I am thankful for my friends here at Scared Monkeys or "Sacred Monkeys" as some of us call this place. I think it was Tevye or Boo that came up with the name. I am glad to be surrounded with people that really care about what happened to this little soul. I am thankful that we watch each others back, and stand up for each other like we have seen in the past week or so.

It saddens me greatly that the Anthony's life still goes on, bigger and better than ever, all at the murdering of their grandchild. Evidently the Anthony's are on another of their money grubbing trips, to rake in the money for their foundation. Maybe they are vacationing on Caylee's dime. But it certainly isn't coming from them doing a lick of work since this time last year. Words fail me. ...

I know how you feel Fanny. It does not seem like a year.
It always bothered me that Caylee was gone before anyone had a chance to save her.

Old article around indigent status:

Death penalty changes everything in Casey Anthony case
By Drew Petrimoulx @ April 14, 2009 5:25 PM

The State has announced it will seek the death penalty for accused child killer Casey Anthony.

From the trial location to the cost being levied on taxpayers - the implications are endless.

Diana Tennis, who has a dozen capital murder trails under her belt, says Casey's defense team will first have to convince a judge it's qualified to try the case.

"You're talking six, seven, eight hundred hours preparing for these cases," Tennis said.

Florida statute requires that lawyers who defend death penalty cases meet strict qualifications.

"I'm doubtful that any of the lawyers currently involved in this case meet those requirements," Tennis said.

Defense spokeswoman Marti Mackenzie told me the team does have a member who is death-penalty qualified, but she wouldn't specify who.

Tennis said the decision by prosecutors to pursue the death penalty will add years to the trial and up to an additional $1 million to the bill taxpayers will have to foot.

She believes Casey's lawyers will declare her indigent - allowing them to charge the State for everything from lawyer fees and expert witnesses to court reporters and depositions.

Tennis also believes this will make it more likely the trial will be moved to a location outside of Orlando.

And bring on the special interests that feed off the death penalty issue.

"This is the exact kind of case that is going to be seen as pulpit for everybody who ever wants to have a pulpit," Tennis said.
