The Pension Fund conducts a General Meeting

Rona Coster
The Pension Fund Tourism Sector general meeting
The Pension Fund Tourism Sector Aruba held a General Assembly meeting on Wednesday, at the Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa.

The meeting’s agenda put together by Managing Director Sanaa Bergen included the approval of the minutes of last year’s General Assembly, a warm welcome to new companies joining the fund, a review of the articles of incorporation, highlights of the fund’s financial performance, an outline of the objectives for 2008/09, and the honoring of the pioneers and contributors to the visionary creation of PFTSA.

The PFTSA board members list, explains Bergen, features many pillars of Aruba’s tourism industry including key Finance, Human Resources, Business and Labor leaders represented by Ben Marapin, Glenn Farro, Rudy Geerman, Anselmo Pontilius, Nathaly Wouters, Ton Koolman, Paul Vandormael, Valerie Pietersz-Camacho, Lisette Mohamed and Ann Brinkman.

During the General Assembly, the PFTSA also reported that a number of important local companies joined the pension fund this year among them Grobo NV, Hertz, Keppel Entertainment, Occidental Resort & Casino, Oranjestad Laundry, Romite NV, Penha, TEC INC and Divi Links.

Overall, the PFTSA, compliant with guidelines of the Central Bank of Aruba showed off a very healthy balance sheet in regards to its net income, investment income, assets and membership, which grew 13% over the past year.

As for future developments, the community may expect an increase in the number of mortgages granted and financed by the PFTSA, also on line access and a continuous growth in membership.

The PFTSA, says Bergen is committed to become the number one choice of employers and employees for the execution of their retirement plans.

At the end of the informative General Assembly, the PFTSA honored industry pioneers among them Hotelier Ed Malone, Labor Leader Anselmo Pontilius, Tourism Expert Rory Arends, Businessman Harold Malmberg, Finance & Tax Expert Angel Bermudez, Advisor John Merryweather, Businessman Willie Kremer and Economist Ben Marapin for their historical contributions to the pension fund, a first of its kind in the industry.

Herbert Sidney Merryweather

Merryweather document regarding OIL.  See page 13

Sidney Merryweather was at one time a manager at Eagle Refinery

http://www.lago-colony.com/LAGO_LEGEND_anD_BOOK_2/Aruba%20Book%204%20Final.pdf

In August of that same year a company of three gentlemen who first had been in Curaçao, came to Aruba. The party, headed by Captain Robert Rodger and employed by the British Equatorial Oil Company, was searching for a suitable place for a harbor where oil from Maracaibo could be transshipped. This oil was extracted in Venezuela by the Lago Petroleum Company

snip

The gentlemen came to look for a place to establish a transfer station for crude oil, coming from the Lake of Maracaibo. The Lago Petroleum Company had bought the British Equatorial Oil Company and that was how the Lago Oil and Transport Company Ltd. had been founded.

snip

He also visited the refinery that was under construction on the other half of the island, the Arend Petroleum Maatschappij (Eagle Petroleum Company). The establishment of this refinery was a reaction by the Dutch/English Royal Shell-group, established on Curaçao, to the activities of the American company on the sister island. This refinery started operations under the name of Compañia Mexicana de Petrole el Aquila S.A. and was an independent part of the Royal Shell. On Aruba, the company was in business under the name of ’Arend Petroleum Maatschappij', but everybody used the English name 'Eagle'.

The refinery was built to the west of Oranjestad, its head office is still used as the office of the ATA and the AHATA. A pier was built near Punta Brabo where the tankers could moor. From there, a railway was built to the refinery. The Eagle itself had three tankers running to bring in crude oil from Maracaibo. In April 1928 these operations were started.. In June 1928 the first oil, refined on Aruba was delivered by the Eagle and exported to Argentinië. For the management of the refinery, a housing estate was built between Oranjestad and the refinery. That neighborhood and the houses from that time, mostly nicely restored, still exist and, together with the head office mentioned above, they are the only permanent fixtures that still recall this almost forgotten chapter from the history of Aruba, The Eagle

BLOME:  Well, they like to call this their slogan, one happy island.

But this fabric of politeness is what being frayed here.

There was a rally scheduled for last night for justice.  But after Beth Holloway came on the air yesterday and was very direct in calling the Kalpoe brothers criminals who had been left to walk the island, well, this protest last night turned into something else.  It was a protest against the media, and also against the very sharp language that Beth Twitty had used yesterday

snip
One man who does understand it, though, is our next guest.  He is John Merryweather.  He's a former Aruban minister and was a participant in yesterday's protest.

Mr. Merryweather, thank you so much for being with us tonight.  Tell us, why were you involved in that protest?  What do you think that Natalee's mother did wrong?

JOHN MERRYWEATHER, FORMER ARUBA DIPLOMAT:  Well, first—no, no, first of all, I'd like to answer why I was at the—not protest.  It was a gathering in support of our justice system.  It was not a protest.  It never started out as a protest either.  I would like that to be very, very clear.

When I was there, I hadn't heard what the comments of Natalee's mother either of the day.  I was asked that after I was there.  I went there.  I was not part of the organization, but I went there in support of our justice system.

(CROSSTALK)

SCARBOROUGH:  What did she say that was wrong?  What did Natalee's mother say that was...

(CROSSTALK)

SCARBOROUGH:  No, what did Natalee's mother say that offended so many people in Aruba?

MERRYWEATHER:  Well, you know, it—it—it offended me, also.  You cannot—these two boys, I don't know them.  I don't know the parents.  I don't know anyone involved in this personally.

But our justice system, as yours in the states, you are innocent until proven guilty.  This system of ours, whether you agree with it or not, whether you understand it or not, allows these people to be free at this moment, but they are not free of charges.  They have not been exonerated from this case.

They have not been found innocent.  They are witnesses.  And they can be called upon at any time

Today a letter was handed over at VNO destined for the Dutch Government
Bon Dia Aruba
11/04/2005

ORANJESTAD – During a meeting yesterday at Plaza Betico Croes, a group of about a hundred people got together to express their concern about the effect of the Natalee Holloway case on our island, in particular its tourism.

With the songs of Jossy Brokke, the prayers of father Eusebio Petronia and speeches from John Merryweather and Julie Renfro, last night tried to reflect the worry felt here.
snip

According to Merryweather, as much as they are concerned about the mother’s situation which they feel sad, it is not fair that she continues with her plan to discredit the whole island for something that is not the island’s fault.
And given was have happened lately, it’s time to get Holland involved to see if the US can understand that Aruba is doing everything possible and that they don’t deserve the treatment they are getting.

7/5/05 - Protestors outside of the court house in Aruba organized by MERRYWEATHER, John who is good friends with Polis Commissioner Dompig.

MERRYWEATHER, John…. Aruban. 73 years old. Has lived on Aruba “a long time.” Admitted he is good friends with “the police commissioner” (DOMPIG), and he knows several high-ranking, more senior persons within the police department. On 7-5 he was the (or one of) leaders of the Aruban demonstration group of 50-100 persons held in front of the Court House. They held signs against the “unfair media coverage” that is portraying Aruba and its judicial system negatively. He also mentioned that the 7-5

morning press conference plea of BETH about the still-considered-as-suspects KALPOE’s was not appreciated

The mother of this son came to talk to my mom day before yesterday and it turns out that her son is a classmate of Joran’s.

So, got it, grandson Merryweather is Joran’s classmate. Turns out that that grandson and mom had a major clash with Joran some time before, because Joran accused grandson of killing Joran’s dog and throwing it in Moko Dam (place where TX ES also searched), however, the mother threatened to go the cops to make a complaint against Joran, and the Joran confessed to killing his own dog.****

I’m not kidding. Not even a little bit.

Also, the morning after NH disappeared [May 30, 2005], Joran came with a big bruise on his face and was sleeping in class and could only be woken up when he was pelted with (note?)books.

Every week I find at least 2 more snakes (Boas) but, I give them to other people. Because here in Aruba they kill them, and that is pitiless that they kill all the animals that’s not originated from Aruba. They could at least let people have them as pet or people like myself that love animals give them one more chance in life. I also have 4 arubian rattlesnake, I have 4 tarantula, I have 4 very cool Ocelot Tiger and more on the way. (when she gets pregnant) I also have 2 bengal cats. I also have "Lacoste" which is a female Orinoco Crocodile which is right now only 1.6 meters. i got that one from some guy that had her just for fun, she was in horrible shape and dint even want to eat. But thank god the guy finally decided to let me take care of it. I just got 5 more crocodiles, 2 babies and for 3 that’s already medium size. i have 10 ducks, I have 2 white goose, those were also in horrible shape when I got them from someone that had them miss treated. I have 2 capuchin monkey, a male and a female that were also in horrible condition form this old guy in Curacao that has so many animals to show them of but doesn’t treat them right. So I took them from him, and brought them to Aruba.(Soon they will get baby’s hihi) I have 11 green wing macaw, and 3 blue & gold macaw, that are very cool and sing every morning and every afternoon, 2 cockatoo mullucan. Crane bird, Great curassow. I have one Kuifcaracara (wara-wara). and 2 ringneck parakeets 1 Thick-billed Parrot. I also have 11 tortoise 3 baby’s 3 medium size and 5 full size, and still planning on getting more. I have 10 turtles. And I have 5 dogs right now a pit bull named “Tequila” and 4 miniature pinschers. and I also have a bull named chico and 2 cow. 2 potbelly pigs, a few normal pigs. I have 3 emus. and 10 mini goats. They or very small and dont grow more. I have 2 Pheasant. I also have more then 50 horses, and one mule whith is half horse half donkey. I often have more then 40 chickens but that’s only food for the snakes. I have many more animals that I am planning to get. sssssooooooo BE PENDING…….. “”And if your miss treating your pet it’s not long till I take it from you””

Philip Conrad's Interests
General As everyone knows my interest is in animals, drag racing, and I love children’s as well. I have so many things and ideas that I want to do, but slowly and surely all my dreams will come true. I love the beach I’m every week on the ocean if it’s not here in Aruba it’s at Venezuela, Curacao, or Bonair with my yacht. I love every type of sport that has to do with the ocean, fishing, water skiing spear fishing and more. And the question that everyone is asking, if I have ever been bitten by any of my animals….. The answer is YESSSSSSSSSSSSS…... haha I have been bitten by snakes more then 20 times... I have been bitten by a medium size ocelot tiger, once almost lost my hands from one of my cayman……. Almost lost a finger because of a parrot, and along the way I have been bitten by hamsters, rabbits, dogs monkey, horse, donkey, crab, iguana and much more…... I have been attacked by a black tip reef shark and much more…… hihihi I hope you don’t think am crazy... hahahah

Vanity Fair

The next afternoon a former government minister named John Merryweather helped organize a demonstration in front of the courthouse to protest the media's depiction of Aruba.

One of the Kalpoes' attorneys, meanwhile, attacked Beth's statements as "prejudicial, inflammatory, libelous, and totally outrageous." Caught off guard, Beth went back before the cameras at the end of the week and apologized "to the Aruban people and to the Aruban authorities if I or my family have offended you in any way."

But the damage was done. "That woman needs help," an angry John Merryweather told me as we sat on his terrace. "This is just a concerted attack on Aruba. A terrorist attack. Why blame the whole island, a whole country, for something that is out of our control? She attacks our justice system? What about yours? JonBenét. Was that ever solved? Michael Jackson—he gets off. O.J. That's American justice, and the woman is criticizing us?"

Yes, I think he does!

So many animals is one thing, but he also says he has a yacht and makes 250K plus per year.
